AIBU to ask everyone who can to get behind Greta Thunberg, even if only online, as she's now getting a lot a lot a lot of hate. She clearly threatens people - especially her polar opposites, men, rich old men, powerful men (did I mention men?). Let's all give her the lurve and support she needs.
So on FB I challenged one just now - Why are you attacking a young woman? - and he disappeared. Funny, that.

Honestly people will say anything not to improve the world for their own children. Bizarre.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 09:37

Give them a struggle for a school spot and it’s all sharp elbows. This? It’s all wah it could’ve been my child, who is she. I don’t care, it won’t work, what if it was on a Sunday, she’s autistic and on and on

Why is that?

ChicCroissant · 23/09/2019 09:40

Nobody who puts themselves on social media gets - or expects - 100 per cent support.

As PP have said, taking a day off school does nothing. What changes are each of those striking school children going to make in their day to day lives to support the cause?

MyCatsHat · 23/09/2019 09:42

I would feel the same protective worries whether it was a boy or a girl of Greta's age and diagnoses.

Jillyhilly · 23/09/2019 09:42

It's a big part of Dutch culture that everyone's opinion is important

Ah well there’s your first mistake. Everyone’s opinion is NOT important. Some opinions are absolutely idiotic. Idiotic opinions delivered by people who think their opinions are important are not helpful to anyone. Just spend a day listening to LBC.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 09:43

Idiotic yes half this thread for example

Floisme · 23/09/2019 09:47

I can admire Greta Thunberg and consider her to be a highly impressive young person and still feel uneas at the cult that seems to be developing around her. As an example, I thought sailing to the USA was crass - no-one has yet been able to explain to me why it was necessary for her to attend in person.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 23/09/2019 09:47

Honestly people will say anything not to improve the world for their own children. Bizarre

Indeed, like ‘I let my child have the day off to strike” rather than actually making changes to their lives.

Floisme · 23/09/2019 09:47

unease.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 09:48

The children I know makes changes and are not allowed to strike but absolutely is influenced by the exposure and education.

Birds would you prefer this exposure didn’t exist?

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 09:50

Are influenced.

Behaviour change on a mass scale is nigh on impossible it needs huge amounts of exposure to have a chance. So who says yes get rid of that on here?

opalinksi · 23/09/2019 09:52

I do wonder how people can misinterpret comments on the machine behind the young lady as being an "attack", ( that's a tad Vicky Pollard don't you think?), on her personally.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 09:56

Ooh you’re back Opalinski neatly sidestepping the question. How did ‘the media’ choose her again?

Or do you accept she was the first person and did start the strikes.

I do wonder how people think the media works.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 10:07

Millions turned up on Friday, across 125 countries. A percentage, let’s say 20 to 30 will make changes based on this exposure. 70 percent will bitch and moan about it as per this thread. A a few will make decisions that have real impact.

Still better than 0.

opalinksi · 23/09/2019 10:07

No, I do not accept that she was the "first person to start the strikes". I believe she is a puppet/public face used by someone who has seen her as an opportunity. This has been facilitated by whoever this is (organisations, parents, who knows?) and the media.

It worked out fine for them all as she is obviously a really interesting young lady but you cannot tell me she is the first to ever strike, chain herself to a fence or tree, wave a placard etc. She is no more special than any other child who has done this and been passionate about their cause. She was assisted and facilitated. The whole campaign was designed. An opportunity was taken.

I think it is quite naive to think otherwise.

Trewser · 23/09/2019 10:08

Yes what about Swampy and the rest of the A30 gang?

It's not just Sweden that has a monopoly on environmental activism.

opalinksi · 23/09/2019 10:09

Back to work. And surprise, surprise. I work in media.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 10:09

Opalinski did she sit on the steps of Swedish parliament on a Friday of her own accord or did ‘the media’ choose her as a puppet Hmm

No she isn’t the first to strike she is the first to start the Friday strike that is now global

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 10:10

You better go audition the next Greta then Opal

opalinksi · 23/09/2019 10:12

I'm the health area rather than environment :)

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 10:13

Ok do answer the question below

Did she sit there on her own accord?

opalinksi · 23/09/2019 10:20

@MarshaBradyo you have spectacularly missed the point.

No-one is suggesting that she didn't go and sit on the steps in protest. The point is that this was leapt on by an agency of some sort which has used her as a figurehead and facilitated the whole "rise" in the media. Promotion, promotion, promotion.

As mentioned, there are SO many amazing young people who have done something similar. Obviously, they just haven't been given the vehicle to move forward the way Greta has.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 10:21

So what she did well them didn’t she

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 10:22

And she started it alone - who cares if she attracted promotion

She did it in a way that no one else did and it worked

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 10:23

So she gets the platform as the first person.

Things work better with a person why get so hung up on the fact you think it shouldn’t have been her
