To find Greta Thunberg patronising and unrealistic?

I really can’t bear being lectured to by a 16 year old!! At that age, we all thought we knew better than everyone... usually we were told “ when you’re old enough to know what you’re talking about, then people will listen” Now this girl has a world wide platform where only she knows best!! Am I being uncharitable??

YABVU.

IAmALazyArse · 21/09/2019 13:22

You know there was for example a 19 years old Nobel price winner, don't you. Young people can know things and understand things you wouldn't be able to comprehend at all. So YABU.

If you think that people should listen only to elders, good luck...

Cheeserton · 21/09/2019 13:23

Unrealistic about whether we'll all change our selfish lifestyles and consumption to save the world in time? Yeah, very likely indeed. Unreasonable to be telling the truth about how much shit we're in if we don't stop it and trying to spur some action? Hell no.

Daring to be 16? YABVVU.

SunshineAngel · 21/09/2019 13:25

I don't think she or anyone is saying that "only she knows best".

It's a true sign of maturity when you finally realise that you can learn lessons from those younger than you as well as those older than you.

It's clear that you've not reached that stage yet, so yes, YABU.

IAmALazyArse · 21/09/2019 13:25

17! Damn it. Not 19

DariaMorgendorffer · 21/09/2019 13:26

YABU

WaterSheep · 21/09/2019 13:28

when you’re old enough to know what you’re talking about, then people will listen

I've heard people a lot older than her talk absolute nonsense, just because you're older doesn't mean you're wiser.

messolini9 · 21/09/2019 13:31

Am I being uncharitable??

Yes. Also in denial.
You are shooting the messenger, when her message is entirely based on fact.

Zebraaa · 21/09/2019 14:01

YANBU I agree 😂

ColaFreezePop · 21/09/2019 14:09

YABU - she actually says listen to people who know more than her about the science.

ThePants999 · 21/09/2019 14:11

She says "don't listen to me, listen to the scientists". YABU.

forkfun · 21/09/2019 14:13

Regardless of her age, she's right. Many, many older people are very wrong on this issue.

ffswhatnext · 21/09/2019 14:14

People can talk about nonsense regardless of their age.
Others will know different things based on their own experiences, how they absorb information etc.

Imagine if the child who escaped slavery and became a leader in a movement to help others escape, had listened to "when you're old enough..."

Or the young girl who refused to give up her seat.

Or the girl who was an educational rights activist.

I could go on. It's their world as well, why should they stay quiet until they are old enough to know more?

ISmellBabies · 21/09/2019 14:16

Yabu.

onioncrumble · 21/09/2019 14:23

Twee, populist, box ticking bullshit. She makes me want to wrap all my possessions in plastic film and throw them at her.

OzzyFinch · 21/09/2019 14:24

when you’re old enough to know what you’re talking about, then people will listen

She is old enough, people are listening, and thank goodness they are. The planet is fucked unless we do something about it. She does know what she's talking about, the more people that listen the better.

Keep shouting Greta, people need to hear.

PlinkPlink · 21/09/2019 15:09

YABVU

Her age has nothing to do with the fact she is right.

RandomMess · 21/09/2019 15:12

Her message is "we need to listen to the scientists"

Isn't it appalling that we are reliant on a teen to be "jumping up and down" to get people to listen to world leading scientists????

Singlenotsingle · 21/09/2019 15:15

I agree with you. All sorts of people are saying much the same thing, so why is she getting all the publicity? YANBU

IAmALazyArse · 21/09/2019 15:24

All sorts of people are saying much the same thing, so why is she getting all the publicity? YANBU

Maybe because people are finally listening?
Many people were saying girls should have right to go to school. World wasn't listening till Malala🤷
(I know there is a difference between being shot and sailing atlantic, but you know what I mean by mentioning Malala)

darkcloudsandrainstorms · 21/09/2019 15:31

Grown ups are full of bullshit. Thanks for confirming it.

NationMcKinley · 21/09/2019 15:36

YABVVVVVU

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 21/09/2019 15:39

Not really "only" her though is it?

Get a grip. I suspect you're the very person who needs "lecturing to". Even if only to get you to notice the irony in your use of patronising...

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 21/09/2019 15:40

Who would you prefer had "all the publicity?"

And you're angry at HER for being a child?
