Washing etiquette

My mum always said it was 'common' to peg washing out in the evening and leaving it overnight when you know it's going to be sunny. I leave for work at 6.30am so for me it's a no brainer to peg out the night before and hope that BBC weather is accurate. Anyone else peg out at night???

There have been a lot of MN threads about this.

I'm an outlier, because I don't mind my washing being darked and it would never occur to me that spiders rub their willies on it.

OccasionalNachos · 20/09/2019 16:56

Depends what it is for me - clothes no, dog blankets etc yes. I do think that stuff which has been out overnight never smells quite as clean, even if it’s warmed back up the next day.

It’s not common, though.

Boom45 · 20/09/2019 16:58

I don't do it, but mainly because our neighbours have right of access through our garden and I don't want them walking into it at night! Never been told it's common though....

DriftingLeaves · 20/09/2019 17:02

My mum would have said the same.

Or on Sundays.

shatteredstudentmum · 20/09/2019 17:09

I always do it, that's way they are usually dry when I get up and I can have another load on timer ready to go out as they are coming in.

TheAlternativeTentacle · 20/09/2019 17:12

I've done it for years.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 20/09/2019 17:13

If it fits your timetable & you don't mind it being darked on by spider willies, do it. Life's too short!

My DM detests clothes airers. I use them because I've got no out door space! No one's died and my laundry is fine!

Iminagony · 20/09/2019 17:17

Yep. DH thinks I'm weird. His sis does it too though Smile

DontCallMeShitley · 20/09/2019 17:20

I have just brought my washing in and put the next lot out. It will stay out until it is dry tomorrow, hopefully.

In not weather it just goes out until it is dry, unless it is white and I want the sun to give it a good bleach.

I used to be lucky and had a veranda that caught the morning sun where I could put an airer so would put it out over night and bring it in late morning.

I do shake it to remove stray bugs though.

Jellybeansincognito · 20/09/2019 17:24

What about morning dew?

LifeIsGoodish · 20/09/2019 17:27

I wonder what a generation of working women will tell their children about 'pegging-out'?

Will we expect them to arrive home from work and get a load of laundry done and pegged out in time to dry before nightfall? Or will we expect them to peg it out before they leave for work the following morning? (I think it's skankier to leave a load of damp laundry festering overnight.)

Or will we tell our sons and our daughters to use their time sensibly, get a load on at a comfortable time and peg out in the evening?

onanothertrain · 20/09/2019 17:28

I do this all the time, my mum would be horrified.

alltummy · 20/09/2019 17:29

It is pretty common in my street. I don't know about the rest of the country.

TheMustressMhor · 20/09/2019 17:29

You lot want to try living on the West Coast of Scotland.

It never stops raining.

onanothertrain · 20/09/2019 17:30

Themustress Not today!!

beela · 20/09/2019 17:31

@LifeIsGoodish we could tell them to use the delay start function on their washing machine so that it finishes just before they get up in the morning.

happyasasandboy · 20/09/2019 17:32

I put it out and it stays out until it's dry (as long as it's forecast reasonable weather!).

If it gets rained on, then it stays out longer until it's dry again.

Darkness and spider willies don't worry me.

Ponoka7 · 20/09/2019 17:35

It's really sad that Women years ago had all these rules to live by. Life was hard enough.

People had nothing, so couldn't show off, so they got embroiled in this stuff instead.

Notajogger · 20/09/2019 17:35

Yep I leave mine out overnight. No point faffing about bringing it in when it's not dry.

tobedtoMNandfart · 20/09/2019 17:38

Heaven forfend it might get darked on.

tobedtoMNandfart · 20/09/2019 17:38

@Lvsel thanks for sharing that 🤣

DinoGreen · 20/09/2019 17:41

No I don’t do this. Not because I think it’s common or anything like that but because I don’t want clean washing to get covered in morning dew. I usually set washing on a timer to finish early in the morning and then I peg it out first thing at the weekends, during the week I do a load every other evening or so and I hang it on an airer to dry.

Boyskeepswinging · 20/09/2019 17:47

This time of year I have no option but to peg out at night as it's now pitch black when I leave the house in the morning. It would feel like a waste of a good drying day if I didn't peg out!
