Washing etiquette

Ginfanatic · 20/09/2019 16:50

My mum always said it was 'common' to peg washing out in the evening and leaving it overnight when you know it's going to be sunny. I leave for work at 6.30am so for me it's a no brainer to peg out the night before and hope that BBC weather is accurate. Anyone else peg out at night???

LVESEL😭😭

bridgetreilly · 20/09/2019 17:54

That is bonkers. Just do it when it's most convenient to you and bring it in when it's dry.

Suzysleep · 20/09/2019 18:00

I always leave my butt hanging out to dry overnight too

tobedtoMNandfart · 20/09/2019 18:03

@Suzysleep don't we all love 🤣

NerrSnerr · 20/09/2019 18:04

What's morning dew going to do to the washing? It'll just dry as the sun comes out. I leave mine out overnight and if it rains it stays out until the rain stops and the washing dries (I'm always gutted when we have persistent rain and I have to bring it in wet)

midsomermurderess · 20/09/2019 18:09

I have always lived in flats and dry my washing on a pulley. I find these threads about 'pegging out' and washing-line etiquette oddly fascinating, having have no idea what the correct answer is.

Shopkinsdoll · 20/09/2019 18:11

Yes I do this only if I know the weather will be sunny the next day.

Msgiggles30 · 20/09/2019 18:15

I used to do this until a moth laid eggs on one top. Put washing away as didnt notice..4 days later hundreds of tiny black caterpillars all over this top and spread all over the drawer. May have been during the day but I'm now scared for life and feel like more chance at night 😂😂

LifeIsGoodish · 20/09/2019 18:23

e could tell them to use the delay start function on their washing machine so that it finishes just before they get up in the morning.

But why should they have to add an extra chore to the rush of getting dc and selves ready and out on time?

I've just sent younger dc out to fetch in dry laundry, older dc has pegged out the load that has just finished, and dh or I will peg out the second load, which will finish after dc have gone to bed. No stress, no rush, no chivvying. Plus dc get involved in household chores.

scarbados · 20/09/2019 18:24

Mine goes out when it's washed and comes in when it's dry in fine weather. If it rains a bit, I'll leave it to dry again, although I live at the coast and think our rain is less polluted that the stuff that used to make my clothes smell when I lived in Birmingham. I hate having to dry stuff indoors so avoid it as much as possible.

museumum · 20/09/2019 18:25

I do it all the time but I’m well aware my parents and grandparents would consider this just not “done”.

DeNiroDeFaro · 20/09/2019 18:25

Summer I shower evening and morning. In winter I shower night before and only wash my lady garden and butt in the morning and use spray.

What?!!! Grin

CMOTDibbler · 20/09/2019 18:29

My grandmother used to get sniffy about people pegging out after 8am.

My mum worked FT, so washing went on the line as and when. But dh and I always joke about getting darked on and the spiders Grin as ours is frequently out overnight due to not being dry or being forgotten

SoundofSilence · 20/09/2019 18:33

Yep, I peg out before bed if the weather's nice. Never much cared what anybody thought, it's hard enough getting everybody up, dressed and fed in the morning before work without adding in laundry duties.

MitziK · 20/09/2019 18:37

Yup. I heard that all the time and would get sent out in the dark to fetch things when they hadn't dried during the day, rather than have the neighbours see her doing it. Clothes airers were an abomination, as was the tumble drier that half blocked the kitchen door but was used exactly twice in around 45 years.

People who get butterflies/moths laying eggs on clothes, though - that's using the floral scented ones, as it attracts them to abandon their food plant, thanks to the ridiculous amount of perfumes. Use an Eco fabric softener and it's not an issue.

pinksparkleunicorns · 20/09/2019 19:13

@Lvsel wins.

clucky3 · 20/09/2019 19:19

I do this. I really couldn't give a shit whether it's common or not. Who has the energy to care?

habibihabibi · 20/09/2019 19:36

I hang things on hangers and put on a wheeled rack inside overnight and wheel it out in the morning. In the ME it's humid at night atm but burns off in the morning. Hang in the shade and its dry in a a jiffy.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 20/09/2019 19:37

Living in the official wettest part of the UK I have roughly 30 outside drying days a year. It's never once crossed my mind to double this by pegging out at night! Not something I've ever seen but probably because it rarely stops pissing down.

ButtercupsOurGold · 20/09/2019 19:41

I do this. My dad remembers his mother saying "Ooh that Marjorie Mann is hanging washing on a Sunday!" Shock about her neighbour. Grin

manicmij · 20/09/2019 19:42

Never pegged out and left overnight. A. In case of theft B. Aur is heavier during night and washing will be susceptible to being

covered in more dirt from the air. At least that is what the dowagers in my family told me. Always pegged out before going to work if weather looked fine.

BishBashBoshy · 20/09/2019 19:57

I tend to peg washing out at night. I don't care if someone thinks it's common. I don't have time in the morning.

My husband doesn't like it but he can't be bothered to do the washing so tough.

BishBashBoshy · 20/09/2019 20:00

@ButtercupsOurGold my mum comments on other people's washing. She only puts her "best" on the line and she hates that I hang my knickers out.

She'd have a heart attack if she knew I hung it out overnight and generally don't rewash if it gets rained on. She'd feel like she'd failed as a mother! 🤣

tillytrotter1 · 20/09/2019 20:05

"Ooh that Marjorie Mann is hanging washing on a Sunday!" shock about her neighbour.

When we lived in Germany there were by-laws, or whatever they were called, preventing you from doing this!

northernknickers · 20/09/2019 20:11

@tillytrotter1 I was a rebel...and hung mine out VERY early in the morning and hoped nobody dobbed me in to the washing police...got away with it for 6 years...until I moved 'off-base' and didn't dare risk it 😱
