To feel uncomfortable with regards to Drag?

Am I the only one who feels uncomfortable with Drag?

AIUI Drag came about because women's roles were originally played by men on the stage, and from there it's evolved to have pantomime dames, which is a caricature of women. Drag has now become an art form, a performance, with programmes like RuPaul's Drag Race showing how popular it is, but at it's core it's still a caricature, it's still a parody of women, and it's gaudy, brash and the wit and put downs waspish!

I can't help but feel a bit uncomfortable about it all, maybe it's something I'm reading too much into, but effectively it's men aping women in a very unattractive way (and I'm not just talking the make up here).

Anyone else feel the same? Or should I just embrace it and get over myself?

Jesus Christ.
Some people need their bumps felt. Fish is not misogynistic? You may have been born yesterday but the rest of us weren’t. Get a grip

Laiste · 20/09/2019 12:23

''Non-drag women''? I'm a 'non drag' now am i?

A cis. A non drag. What the fuck is all this?

A.Woman. It's not complicated. No matter how much some people like to pretend it is so they can muscle in on it sideways somehow. For whatever weird fucking reason.

MorganKitten · 20/09/2019 12:25

@Cookit ‘it takes men to celebrate women apparently.‘ well women certainly don’t celebrate each other. I’m so lucky I found two communities, roller derby and lgbtq, because before that it was women telling me how I should dress or look, that I was a slut, that I should have a drink.
Now I belong to a sports team and perform burlesque with others who celebrate women

MorganKitten · 20/09/2019 12:27

@LloydBraun I’ve been quite open and honest about how I know the terms, no need to try insult me.

Vilanelle · 20/09/2019 12:27

@Stickybeaksid You are assuming that OP goes to drag shows every week and purposely seeks out such programmes on tv so she can bitch about them.

I hate comments like these, people CAN be aware of stuff without ACTUALLY following it!

LloydBraun · 20/09/2019 12:30

Oh, ok Morgan. I don’t get to insult you but you get to insult women in general. Thanks for explaining the rules.
Ps what I said before about getting a grip - in spades

Stickybeaksid · 20/09/2019 12:31

Villanelle I get that. I just don’t see why people get so worked up about stuff. You don’t need to or have to like everything in the world. It doesn’t mean it’s wrong

HumberElla · 20/09/2019 12:31

Lord love a fucking duck, please tell me that Pride didn’t promote a drag queen called Molestia Child

I mean FF Actual Sake!

BackToTheOIdHouse · 20/09/2019 12:32

Funny thing is I don't feel the need to be 'celebrated'. I'd just like to live in a world where misogynistic stereotypes aren't a thing. Where teenage lesbians aren't reduced to tears by men in frocks for not being feminine enough (still, by @MorganKitten's rationale a man telling you how to dress is better than a woman doing it). Where women aren't reduced to the smell of their gentitals or fake tits and heels by men.

And no, I don't think that being called 'fish' or being hideously parodied by men celebrates me anyway, actually.

BackToTheOIdHouse · 20/09/2019 12:34

You don’t need to or have to like everything in the world

No, you don't. But I'd say that not liking things which are harmful to women is ok, no?

LiveInAHidingPlace · 20/09/2019 12:35

"Now I belong to a sports team and perform burlesque with others who celebrate women"

Yes, let's celebrate women by taking all our clothes off, how wonderful.

So strange that men don't feel the need to celebrate each other in the same way!

OrchidInTheSun · 20/09/2019 12:35

🚫🍆🐼

MorganKitten · 20/09/2019 12:39

@LloydBraun I’m not insulting women in general, I enjoy being a women thanks. Why have I said a personal insult to anyone? Because I understand the term fish and how it’s used in the community. Ok. I didn’t tell people to get a grip or say personal insults.

@backtotheoldhouse where did I say a MAN telling me how to dress? I didn’t. I said the communities I’m in have supported me and encouraged me. Women before that haven’t been supportive. Great if you’ve always had women cheering you on. It didn’t happen for me.
Teachers, straight women, friends, women I worked with saying if I dress a certain way I’m a slut, even on here being told because I do burlesque I’m a sex worker and have mental health issues.... other women should be supporting each other and before I joined roller derby, burlesque and the lgbtq community it didn’t happen for me.

HumberElla · 20/09/2019 12:39

Just checked and yes Pride magazine think it’s absolutely top bananas!

Molestia Child and Anna Bortion

www.pride.com/dragqueens/2018/5/17/18-funniest-drag-queen-names

And before I get called a prude I don’t give a shit if you think that. I won’t accept that child molesting references are jolly hilarious larks.

MorganKitten · 20/09/2019 12:41

@LiveInAHidingPlace no all clothes do t come off during burlesque, Gypsy Rose Lee, Polly Rae, DitaVon Teese for a few examples... all of my clothes don’t come off.
And why not celebrate that after years of being told I’m ugly and fat by other women, that I embrace my curves (a size 12/14 isn’t fat especially when you work out) and celebrate being female.

BackToTheOIdHouse · 20/09/2019 12:43

@MorganKitten teachers called you a slut because of the way you dress?

I'm sorry you've felt unsupported by women in the past. But throwing your lot in with misogynist drag culture isn't going to remedy that. Opposing misogyny is a good start, wherever you find it.

BackToTheOIdHouse · 20/09/2019 12:44

@HumberElla I'm speechless.

I'll ask again... Why does anyone think this is OK?

MorganKitten · 20/09/2019 12:47

@BackToTheOIdHouse ‘you’ll never find a husband if you dress like a slut’ it was mufti day, I was a granger in baggy jeans and had a vest top on.

You can’t blanket call every person, male or female, who perform as a drag queen myoginistic. That’s like saying everyone who drink is an alcoholic, everyone wearing a short skirt is a slut.
Judge people individually by who they are.

BackToTheOIdHouse · 20/09/2019 12:53

@MorganKitten I do hope you reported the teacher who said that.

The very act of dressing up as a hideous caricature of womanhood is misogynistic. The disgusting names, reducing women to the supposed smell of their gentitals, picking on young women and ridiculing them until they're in tears, the sexist 'jokes' - they're all just icing on the cake. While not all performers do all of the latter, they all parody femininity. Hence, misogynist.

"Presumeably there are multiple safeguards in place for storytime for anyone who is reading, because anyone could try to use storytime to access children. Isn't storytime usually attended by parents anyway?"

Apparently not - there have been several incidents this year of convicted paedophiles/sex offenders doing Drag Queen Storytime.

That’s like saying everyone who drink is an alcoholic, everyone wearing a short skirt is a slut

It's so not.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 20/09/2019 12:59

morgan whether all the clothes or none of the clothes come off, the point is to titillate men.

I notice there aren't many grannies doing burlesque.

No doubt you'll have a long list of those who do. But we all know that is not the norm and there is a reason for that.

Men like burlesque and stripping because they enjoy watching women humiliate themselves. How the hell is that empowering.

MorganKitten · 20/09/2019 13:02

@BackToTheOIdHouse yes and the head of year just laughed.

Ok, so female drag queens, do you see that as misogynistic? I’ve never been to a venue where the Queen or King has made an audience member cry, that’s to be taken-up with the individual queen.

Most of the jokes I’ve seen are about men, most acts I’ve seen lip sync, perform live, dance or tribute.

What’s wrong with names like Latrice Royale, Morgan McMicheals, Alaska, Raven, Aquaria, Lolo Brow, Lilly Savage, Ruby Wednesday? Not all queens have insulting names. There are a few true.
Not all queens use the term fish.

If your offended by the gay male queens then you can be fine with bio queens or drag kings. It’s the same thing.

MorganKitten · 20/09/2019 13:05

@LiveInAHidingPlace ok... Mama Jojo King, in her 60s performs internationally.
And the audiences I perform to are mainly women. There’s a handful of men, and these have been big main stage shows not a little bar.

Acts aren’t just oh I have no clothes. I’ve seen a Donald Trump act, Tete Bang and Lolo Brow do political shows. I do an act about plastic surgery. I’ve seen an act where the girl makes the guy strip. Boylesque is huge now.

If you go to shows you see a range of acts.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/09/2019 13:06

I think you need to stop and go research male privilege
