To think The Sun 'news'paper is vile and should be closed down?

Its always been awful, and as I personally know people who were at Hillsborough I wouldn't wipe my arse with it. However, just when you think they couldnt sink any lower they do just that. The stuff about Ben Stokes has really crossed a line and has caused great distress to him and his family. What on earth posessed them to think that was of any interest to the general public whatsoever?

#DontBuyTheSun', 'The Scum' and 'BoycottTheSun' have all been trending on Twitter all day. There is genuine anger about what they have done this time. Hopefully the rest of the UK are now waking up to something that people on Merseyside have known for the past 30 years. The Sun isn't even fit to wipe your arse with.

YANBU to think it’s vile. YABU to think you have any right to dictate what others can publish. We all have things we feels strongly about, but most of us are able to see that it’s impossible (and wrong) to force others into believing the same. Reason, judge if you feel like it, but don’t call for the further erosion of the freedom of the press.

Mrskeats · 17/09/2019 18:52

Scouser here. Totally. It’s dreadful. He’s poor man and his family.

GibbonLover · 17/09/2019 18:54

Couldn't agree more - can't abide the filthy rag.

If anyone's interested, you'd be given a very warm welcome on the 'Shun the Sun' and 'Total Eclipse of the Sun' Facebook groups.

Please consider boycotting this vile publication.

BasilTheGreat · 17/09/2019 18:54

I think the Guardian is vile. I want it closed down.

Figgygal · 17/09/2019 18:54

I don't agree with it publishing the story it's gross, invasive and not in public interest and they're being rightly vilified for it

But

I don't think we can compromise our need for a free press even in these circumstances

familycourtq · 17/09/2019 18:54

I don't know (and I don't want to know) what the story with Ben Stokes is. YANBU the Scum is the pits - BUT- there is something amiss when so many people buy this trash and I can't honestly tell them not to or ban it.

GibbonLover · 17/09/2019 18:56

Oh and BTW, there's erosion of the press and then there's telling downright lies and intruding into the private lives of others. I'm quite happy for a little erosion to occur if it prevents further upset.

Waves to fellow Scousers, hope all Reds are ready for tonight!

Cheeseoncrumpets · 17/09/2019 18:58

Boggles Im all for freedom of the press, but this has crossed a red line IMO.

What on earth posessed them to think going with this story was in the public interest? It was over 30 years ago. He wasn't even born when it happened. I cant help but wonder if they've published it to divert from the shitstorm going on with their beloved Boris and Brexit? Well that backfired didnt it. There is real anger about what they've done this time.

The problem is that people buy this shite.

AnneElliott · 17/09/2019 19:02

I think it's an awful rag and I've never bought it. But no, YABU to want to ban it.

People need to stop buying it and then it will close down. I'm impressed that Liverpool doesn't sell it anywhere in their postcode.

But as a pp said - they hate the Guardian. Shall we ban that too?

GibbonLover · 17/09/2019 19:02

I think the Guardian is vile. I want it closed down

What I suggest you do is boycott it. Set up campaigns to urge others not to buy it or read it. Give some concrete reasons as to why it should close and get as many people on board as you can. Perhaps you could start by giving us some reasons now?

Morado · 17/09/2019 19:04

This is why I'm glad Liverpool won't stock the sun. I don't have to see it. Although sometimes I accidentally click on an onlince article from their page and then go into a panic and have to go back right away! And then I get annoyed because they'll still have a statistic to say I clicked on it in the first place 😭

birdsdestiny · 17/09/2019 19:04

It is virulently misogynistic.

Treaclebee · 17/09/2019 19:04

I don't understand why people still buy it. They have been vile for decades.

RedSheep73 · 17/09/2019 19:06

It's always been shit, but knobheads have always bought it, That doesn't seem to change unfortunately.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/09/2019 19:07

What on earth posessed them to think going with this story was in the public interest?

They didn't. They thought it would be attention grabbing enough to be worth the risk of a possible rap on the knuckles.

YANBU to think it’s vile. YABU to think you have any right to dictate what others can publish.

This. The Sun is awful. I would never buy it and encourage everyone who does to join the boycott. It is the responsibility of everyone to see that the Sun doesn't make money from immoral behaviour. It is the fault of everyone who buys it that it continues to do stuff like this.

If we hand the government the power to control the press they will abuse it, as our current PM is demonstrating.

birdsdestiny · 17/09/2019 19:08

I was talking about the Guardian with regards to misogyny, but I don't think it should be closed down because I don't like it. That sounds very authoritarian. The family member of Ben Stokes could have told their story on social media and had a greater reach than The Sun, would you be campaigning to shut down social media?

kristallen · 17/09/2019 19:08

It was in the Daily Mail too. I don't know why DM got out of outrage about it. It's at least as bad.

Hey1256 · 17/09/2019 19:10

Yep total thickos buy the sun. It's for the dregs of society

Cheeseoncrumpets · 17/09/2019 19:14

The DM only repeated what The Sun had already published. The Sun were the ones who went digging. They sent reporters to New Zeland and knocked on their doors dragging it all up, then they actually went to the cemetary took photos of the gravestones and published those as well.

Obviously they were tipped off by someone (what a lowlife whoever they are!), but they didn't have to run with the story either.

BasilTheGreat · 17/09/2019 19:15

The last story about Cameron and the remarks about his son was awful. It’s just as bad as The Express, just a left leaning one . I stopped reading it about three years ago. I’m a Times person really! Grin

BeardedMum · 17/09/2019 19:19

It’s not ok to publish this shit and it’s nothing to with freedom of speech in my opinion.

CoinOperatedBoy · 17/09/2019 19:19

What have they done now? I'm not giving them more hits and if it's kicking off on FB/Twitter etc I'm not on any of them.

MakeTeaNotWar · 17/09/2019 19:21

But @BasilTheGreat it's the same company?

Farfarfaraway · 17/09/2019 19:23

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Ben Stokes was the best player for England during the ashes and World Cup so the gutter press (looking at you sun and daily mail) will have had journalists looking for days for some dirt, something in his past that they can throw out and the dregs of society will lap up.

Because we can’t possibly have someone doing well now can we- no let’s bring him down and drag him through the gutter not to mention his family
Freedom of the press- ODFOD this was a smear exercise and nothing more
