Especially an office with a tiny window and the whole foot print is probably 15ft by 10ft

What kind of chilli are you guys cooking that doesn't stink?!

Um, normal chilli?

Ohyesiam · 16/09/2019 22:41

Wouldn’t bother me, and I’m vegetarian.

Oodlesandpoodles · 16/09/2019 22:41

Really....

Be thankful you have a job

willstarttomorrow · 16/09/2019 23:08

Does chilli really smell of anything accept 'savoury'? I would just consider it to be heated up leftovers like lots of lunchtime meals at work. I like food and normally when people bring in their leftovers for lunch the next day I just feel jealous, hungry and unorganised because my lunch is a bit crap in comparison or I do not have any and need to go out and spend loads on something pretty crap in comparison. I have a colleague who works at the other end of the office who often prepares some kind of fragrant fish and salad for breakfast in our tiny kitchen (only a microwave). Whilst pungent most people can live with it. Maybe the issue is that we are all expected to eat at our desks (despite not being paid for an hour for lunch).

francienolan · 16/09/2019 23:23

As long as people are eating with their mouths closed i dont care what they're eating at work.

Vanhi · 17/09/2019 06:48

I've never seen a recipe for chilli that didn't include garlic and cumin.

I don't often use recipes and if I do it's broadly for a bit of guidance so I leave out things and add others. IME you need to follow recipes fairly carefully if something needs to rise, or set but otherwise you can just cook things how you like them, and the world keeps turning. And even with the rising/ setting thing you can make substitutions if you understand what's causing that reaction and adjust for it.

Plus I'm not sure if the OP specifically meant chilli con carne, or just any other form of broadly chilli based dish, in which case anything goes.

SoyDora · 17/09/2019 06:53

Why are brits so weird about any food with a smell

What, all of them? Seeing as many people on this thread have said it’s not an issue, I’m not sure exactly what is driving your gross generalisation.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/09/2019 07:46

Why are brits so weird about any food with a smell

What are you on about?

georgialondon · 17/09/2019 07:51

Chilli is fine. It's fish that makes me rage.

pattyhoo · 17/09/2019 08:15

YANBU people that eat at their desks are incredibly disrespectful to colleagues who are actually working. The stink and the noise is very disruptive. Eat in the kitchen/canteen FFS! It's not hard!

Cheeserton · 17/09/2019 08:17

It's fine. Get over it, no big deal at all.

daisypond · 17/09/2019 08:18

Chilli is fine. Who has seating in a work kitchen, or a canteen? Not in my workplace.

LulaLandry · 17/09/2019 08:44

Eat in the kitchen/canteen FFS! It's not hard!

Um not all workplaces have one.

TheGoddessFrigg · 17/09/2019 08:57

Better than having to listen to my manager eating an apple 😕😕😕😕

familycourtq · 17/09/2019 09:06

Is your office in Mexico OP?

MontStMichel · 17/09/2019 09:13

Eat in the kitchen/canteen FFS! It's not hard!

What in an office for 4 people? There is a sink, a kettle, a fridge and microwave - nowhere to sit down and eat except at a desk! There are no rules about what we eat for lunch at DH’s office! Ready meals, takeaways, or sandwiches are the norm! Nobody would bat an eyelid at chilli!

Ripe bananas otoh.....

melmos · 17/09/2019 09:35

YABU

Although eating a banana at work should be grounds for an immediate dismissal

dollydaydream114 · 17/09/2019 09:59

Eat in the kitchen/canteen FFS! It's not hard!

Well, that’s fine where I work now but it certainly was quite hard in the many places I’ve worked which had neither of these things.

namechangedbecauseithinkiabu · 17/09/2019 10:03

What? Why?! I definitely would! Yum! If anyone else in my office did my only complaint would be that it smelled too good and made me jealous! All my colleagues eat cooked leftovers for lunch - pies, pastas, chili’s, anything. Our office smells amazing!

LulaLandry · 17/09/2019 10:09

I know someone upthread said this wasn't a british thing but in my experience it SO is. Anything smelling stronger than a bland sandwich with one slice of ham or whatever seems to be moaned about.

ratatata · 17/09/2019 10:10

Soups are the worst

Oysterbabe · 17/09/2019 10:16

There really are a lot of delicate flowers around. Chilli doesn't have a strong smell at all. There's an Indian woman who sits near me at work and she's always bringing in really strong smelling curries for her lunch. It's annoying because they smell INCREDIBLE and make me really resent my crappy sandwich.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/09/2019 12:53

@LulaLandry by who? How many people have you seen moan about this that you can say it’s a British thing? 5? 10? 50?

Sooverthemill · 17/09/2019 12:55

@ThirstyGhost I wonder if that was my DH? He loves a can of tuna or sardines for his lunch and he has a beard...

LulaLandry · 17/09/2019 13:45

by who? How many people have you seen moan about this that you can say it’s a British thing? 5? 10? 50?

There have been at least 2 or 3 in every office I've ever worked in (not about my food btw, I don't bring it in), so at least 20.
