to take my three year old into the women's loos?!

Just that really. Went out to a farm park yesterday on my own with my three year old son and the loos available were male, female and disabled. I wasn't about to use the disabled loo and in any case someone was using it, so I did what I always do and took DS into the ladies, at which point I got a filthy glance from another woman and she said "he should be using the men's".

I was so taken aback I didn't even reply but the more I think about it the more I think how ridiculous this was. I am entirely supportive of female-only spaces but we are talking about a three year old child (who by the way does not look older than he is). He genuinely doesn't even have any concept of sex yet, he calls everyone "she". He's not old enough to take himself into the men's on his own.

Surely I was not BU?!?!

surely you know that you weren't being unreasonable?

hazeyjane · 16/09/2019 14:16

If you're a man the YABU
If you're a woman then....well, it all sounds a bit unusual.

sugarbum · 16/09/2019 14:17

I'd say 7 and under is fine.
To be honest I'm still uncomfortable with my 9 year old going into mens public toilets, but I don't think its appropriate for him to do otherwise.

iwantluxury · 16/09/2019 14:17

Does your 3yo look like an 8yo?

Of course it's not unreasonable to take a 3yo into the loo with you.

I'd assume there was something wrong with the woman.

LulaLandry · 16/09/2019 14:17

TBF I saw the same woman tutting over something random in the cafe a bit later so maybe she was just mardy.

3!!!

No way would I let my son go into men's public toilets on his own. Much more possible at 7 or 8 and even then I'm very visibly waiting by the door.

TulipCat · 16/09/2019 14:19

Some men's loos only have urinals in them. Can't see a three year old getting on very well with that!

huuskymam · 16/09/2019 14:20

She sounds a bit daft. Who in their right mind would let a 3 year old into the toilets on their own. Soooooo many things could to wrong.

iwantluxury · 16/09/2019 14:20

My 3yo needs help with his trousers 😂 he'd never leave my side to wander into a strange toilet on his own.
How bizarre the woman must have been.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 16/09/2019 14:22

Mad. YANBU. I've taken my nephews in the ladies at age 5, 6.

I think from junior school age onwards I would expect a child to be independent enough to go in the appropriate toilets on their own etc.

nonmerci · 16/09/2019 14:23

She sounds loopy. Three is far too young to go into a public toilet unaccompanied. I only started letting my DS do this when he was seven, granted I am quite overprotective but still.

littlepaddypaws · 16/09/2019 14:23

a polite' it's none of your business if i bring my child into the ladies' and disengage, followed up if need be by, 'so fuck off' and a big smile. that's the paddypaws way, it worked for me on many occasion.

SallyWD · 16/09/2019 14:26

How bizarre, I often take my 6 year old DS in to the ladies and no one has ever commented on it.

BarbariansMum · 16/09/2019 14:27

Children accompany adults into the toilet the matches the adult's sex until they can manage alone, or the age of 8, whichever happens first.

BertrandRussell · 16/09/2019 14:30

Was she a “daft old biddy” by any chance, OP?

Blondebakingmumma · 16/09/2019 14:34

YANBU!

TheQuaffle · 16/09/2019 14:34

YANBU. That woman sounds dumb as hell.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/09/2019 14:36

She’s bonkers not you!

Ijustwanttoretire · 16/09/2019 14:42

'But he identifies as a female'

Sorted.

BumbleBeee69 · 16/09/2019 14:42

Not at all, she was about my age.

This woman so obviously has issues that I don’t really understand why this is a thread, to be honest.

Cakeorchocolate · 16/09/2019 14:44

Of course yanbu.

Are you a daft old biddy op? Grin

CoinOperatedBoy · 16/09/2019 14:45

Wow if everyone had to do this child predators would just hang around the bloody toilets and wait.

I don't let my 7 year old boy in the mens yet, unless he was going in with an older male I fully trusted. I have a 3 year old and it just boggles the mind, he wouldn't even leave me, he'd cry and be scared if I forced him, which I never would! - (single mum, not that it matters!)

YADNBU I can't even believe it needs saying.
