DH 'baking' AIBU

Eurgh I may be U. DH had to go out last night, he told me if I bathed DD5, he would make a marshmallow/rice crispy tray bake with her at her request to take some baking to school. Great! He made the tray bake, didn't follow any recipe but said it tasted good. DD excited. I've just gone to check it and noticed he's lined the tray with bloody cling film instead of going out and buying tin foil. That means one sticky mess as I've tried to remove it with the cling film not really judging. Now got to go and buy sweets instead to give DD something to hand out.

AIBU to say only a fool would like a tray with cling film?!

Must add, I'm a little cross right now but there won't be a huge row, by the time he's home from work it will be a jokey 'if you had a brain you would be dangerous' type teasing.

Gave me a small tear in the eye just reminded me my husband doesn’t do those things with our children and doesn’t have the inclination to either

Give him a whack over the head with a roll of foil and tell him to do a load more tray bakes with your little poppets

Juells · 17/09/2019 18:01

What he should bother to do is learn to do stuff properly. These are adults not helpless children and there is nothing charming or amusing about useless adults.

I'm not a dreadful cook, but I totally messed up a week or so ago - skim read a recipe www.bosh.tv/recipes/creamy-hasselback-potatoes?fbclid=IwAR2wytnEySqC8F_-Q1CNDPS4mS_Pj1K6iZZm_oM9o4iDrGy_YR_OZo6smPk the sauce was absolutely vile, because I thought 'onion powder, surely onion will do, no coconut oil either, I'll use veg, no nutritional yeast, just as well, it makes me fart" 😂

People make mistakes. Not a hanging offence. It doesn't make someone useless.

Jack80 · 17/09/2019 18:05

I wouldn't make it a blame thing, I would just say you lined the tray with cling film its stuck, just a tip for next time to use baking paper or foil.

pictish · 17/09/2019 18:21

Well you know...I’ve done some daft stuff out of laziness/experimentation/mad idea myself. Wouldn’t be too harsh on him if he’s normally good.

Myriade · 17/09/2019 18:42

I dint agree with the "its ok to experiment". Its not OK when its about brining said cake to school AND you are not the one tohave to ave the day by running around if it doesnt work.
Experiemnet as much as you wnt when you are at home for yourself. Not when someone else has to repair your mistakes because you couldnt be bothered to follow a recipe.

I would be cross tbh beause it would have been ME who ONCE AGAIN had to run around like a headless chicken (like the OP did. Running to the shop etc...om a monday am just before the school isnt my idea of starting the school week)

Myriade · 17/09/2019 18:43

And mistakes are OK. But not when soeone else has to repir said mistakes and ypu go away wo a care in the world (he clearly didnt check it was OK in the am) and then expect praise to have done it.

Shutupseaguls · 17/09/2019 18:47

Aw he tried to do something nice.

My ex once tried to make cheese on toast with my hairdryer for the kids while I was out.

Bluetrews25 · 17/09/2019 18:50

Bet it's lovely on ice cream, or plain yoghurt, with a crumbled digestive and raisins......

Lockheart · 17/09/2019 18:52

Can't you just cut a thin layer of the bottom and sides off? Refrigerate it so it's nice and hard then take a good bread knife to it.

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2019 18:52

“Aw he tried to do something nice”
No. He tried to do a something that needed to be done- and didn’t use a bloody recipe!

30to50FeralHogs · 17/09/2019 19:21

I would just say you lined the tray with cling film its stuck, just a tip for next time to use baking paper or foil.

But it sounds like the marshmallows would have stuck to foil or paper too, as there was no butter in the recipe and no oil in the tin, so next time he needs to use a recipe, not just guess.

He's clearly quite competent as he knows that rice crispie cakes have marshmallows in them, so not as bad as hairdryer to make cheese on toast man but its a case of 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' - if he hadn't a clue he'd have looked up a recipe, but he obviously thought he knew enough.

No harm done OP, but next time maybe check what you're actually moaning about as "what sort of fool uses cling film" shows that you also don't know how to make a tray of rice crispie treats!

PorridgeLove · 17/09/2019 19:23

YANBU, I would feel the same. Could he use a sharp knife and cut off a thin layer with the cling foil on it? I always feel bad wasting food.

BrendasUmbrella · 17/09/2019 19:27

"Well you're not very nice! Must be lovely to be perfect and never make a mistake in your life ever. For God's sake, CALM DOWN!!!! Poor bloke..."

Is my comment in keeping with the spirit of the thread? Yep, seems to be. Right, where are those blood pressure tablets...

cyclingmad · 17/09/2019 19:28

So he a made a mistake, why dont you let him know and tell him to pick up something from a 24hr supermarket before he comes home. Unless there is a good reason why he can't e.g. you don't live near any 24hr supermarkets etc.

I recently made a cheesecake, used a recipe which required the temp to be turned down after 10 mins and I did that but to 210 instead of 110. One hour later a burnt cheesecake. i could of just bought one but really wanted to take something in I had baked so I had to run out to the shop and start again (finished at 1am!)

Shit happens to anyone even following a recipe, learnt my lesson though and won't make that mistake again but if my OH had been annoyed at me I would of been Hmm and I wouldn't have expected them to fix m mistake either if they had realised my mistake but to tell me so I could fix it myself.

MerryBerryCheesecake · 17/09/2019 19:48

F.F.S.

All the people on this thread giving brownie points for 'trying' to a grown man who can't make rice krispy squares without fucking it up.

No wonder there are so many useless men about when women line up to kiss their arse for shit a nine year old could manage with ease.

MustardScreams · 17/09/2019 19:56

I always use cling film for rice crispy treats. Once it’s chilled it peels off easily. All chefs use cling film in desserts. It’s fine.

Bit mental your child is crying about this? Surely you’re adult enough to not go so insane over clingfilm that it makes your child cry?! Blimey.

Myriade · 17/09/2019 19:58

@cylingmad, yep there is a good reason. The OP has already had to dash to the supermarket because the fuck up only because apparent JUST BEFORE LEAVING FOR SCHOOL.

The issue is not that the recipe didn’t quite work out. The issue is that the DH was
1- too lazy to actually search for a recipe
2- did whatever he wanted in the full knowledge he would NOT have to sort things out if there was a problem....

cyclingmad · 17/09/2019 20:03

Cooking diasasteres happen all the time shesh happens to me aswell following a recipe/ not following a recipe. Like I said I fucked up my cheesecake just by the temperature alone and I was reading the instructions as I did it as well.

I didn't the bit about OP finding out on the morning but either way - annoying as it might be I would then just OH to make up for it and say your doing extra bedtime or bathtime etc. Hardly anything to get so annoyed about and then post about either.

Not excusign a man either, I just think it is easy to fuck up when your cooking even simple things, its hardly the end of the world either.

cyclingmad · 17/09/2019 20:03

urgh so many typo's

Yawhatnow · 17/09/2019 20:06

I’m surprised your allowed to take home baked treats into school?? Thought that has all been stopped!! It certainly has where I am!!

Drabarni · 17/09/2019 20:16

Well he can bake, just lacks the basic intelligence.
I'm not sure even I know somebody so dim. Grin

Loopytiles · 17/09/2019 20:18

You were both BU to bake on a school night!

Drabarni · 17/09/2019 20:24

We need compulsory housekeeping classes for boys at school. I can't believe how many parents don't teach their kids the essentials in life.
Then they get married and the wife finds out what a useless knob he is.

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/09/2019 20:25

I stopped reading at 'mum the run' bleurgh

We are all on the run innit, mum or not

FelicisNox · 17/09/2019 21:21

I'm not seeing the issue?

I've done a tray "bake" with cling film.. just bung it in the fridge to set? I would never use foil as it sticks like mad unless you spray it and that would taste gross.

I'm sure you're joking with this thread but it doesn't translate well.
