I have lived in my house for ten years. My neighbour has never once opened his windows or curtains in that time. Other neighbours in the street who have lived here for 20 years say he hasn’t opened them since they lived here either. He is a middle aged male lives alone, comes and goes to work each day, says hello if he sees me, not enough to make conversation. He keeps to himself, He rarely has any visitors but when he does he speaks to them outside and never invites anyone in. It’s all very strange and weird, anyone else ever known anyone like this? Would you do anything

OP posts:
BettysLeftTentacle · 13/09/2019 21:36

Maybe he doesn’t want his nosy neighbours looking or listening in....

trinity0097 · 13/09/2019 21:37

My neighbour never opens her blinds and only opens windows in extreme heat.
Doesn’t bother me!

Basketofkittens · 13/09/2019 21:38

You should probably call the police and social services OP.

DareDevil223 · 13/09/2019 21:38

I'm so glad that my neighbours aren't judgemental nosy fuckers.

isabellerossignol · 13/09/2019 21:38

Also to the person who says his house must stink because he doesn't open windows. Why?! How judgemental is that!

It's not judgemental, just realistic. If you don't get air around a building it smells. And quite possibly gets a build up of condensation and mould.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 13/09/2019 21:38

It’s not judgemental- it’s common sense. The house isn’t being aired out if the windows aren’t being opened.

MiniPanda · 13/09/2019 21:40

I find it more odd you'd even notice. We've lived on our street years and I honestly couldn't tell you if any of our neighbours open windows or curtains or even have bloody curtains!

Passthecherrycoke · 13/09/2019 21:41

Oh c’mon OP doesn’t know he hasn’t opened his windows in decades. It’s not like she checks the whole house each day. And if he lives alone in a house condensation is unlikely

Dogdogcat · 13/09/2019 21:43

His name isn't Dexter is it?

CustardySergeant · 13/09/2019 21:44

I was about to post the exact same thing MiniPanda.

Whatsforu · 13/09/2019 21:52

You are the type of neighbour that makes me want to keep my curtains shut!! Leave the guy alone!!!

ImNotYourGranny · 13/09/2019 21:54

Closed windows doesn't necessarily mean damp and mould. Our old house had a major problem with condensation even if the windows were opened. So we had a proper ventilation system installed. You can't see it or hear it but it runs constantly (the plant is in the chimney). Now even if we keep our windows closed our house is better ventilated than most.

RedskyLastNight · 13/09/2019 22:03

We have windows that can be locked very slightly open (like about 1cm). That would fix the air circulating problem (though he might have perfectly adequate other ventilation as pointed out by PP) and you really can't tell from outside unless you come right up to the windows and examine them closely. And if OP is doing that, she is the one with the problem.

Presumably you can't see the windows/curtains at the back -so maybe it's only the ones at the front that are kept closed?

YellWat · 13/09/2019 22:04

Huge amount of critical and judgemental responses here suggesting that this is overly nosy and inappropriate. I disagree.

Ten years living next door to someone and not seeing a window open? Yes that is weird.

And for goodness sake, people, we are supposed to live in communities and keep an eye on each other. It's weird not to have been around for some reason or another in that time- I have spent plenty of time in our neighbours' houses. I'd hope they'd keep an eye on me too.

Doilooklikeatourist · 13/09/2019 22:07

I’m with you OP , I think it’s strange

Our ( previous , we moved ) neighbours would sometimes open their living room curtains a tiny gap

Windows never opened as far as we could see ( we didn’t bother to look hard as not interested in them )

Yes , we did wonder if they were vampires 😀 but they weren’t , just strange

I leave my downstairs curtains open al the time , only close the bedroom curtains at night unless it’s really boiling hot and sunny in which case I close the curtains in the early evening when the sun shine streams in , and open the windows to try and keep the room cool

SarahJah · 13/09/2019 22:11

@Deyes999 my neighbour is like this. Ignore it. Literally. Me and DP just laugh... two old ladies live there. Don't work and their car never leaves so even weirder.

They are not the type to mow our lawn or house watch whilst we are away either, they very much keep to themselves. Never say hello to me so I never respond.

Whatsforu · 13/09/2019 22:13

Its more weird to wonder about somebody's curtains. She has seen him so no worries there. I think some people have too much time on their hands!!!

Peterpiperpickedwrongagain · 13/09/2019 22:13

We have windows on the other side of the room that have the curtains open but you can't see it from the street

^as above. there are other options to having the windows/curtains facing you open. RUDE that you & neighbours have discussed him tbh. Not your business.

The rental property across the road from us, since new people moved in 3 years ago they don’t open the front blinds/windows because the sun beats down on them all day and it would be to hot for them to do so. I never asked, it’s not my business, they chose to mention it one day -I don’t care if all their front blinds/curtains are shut all day. I don’t spent my time at home looking at their house!

Your neighbour could have the whole back of their house open for also you know.

He was a most peculiar man
That's what Mrs. Reardon says
And she should know
She lived upstairs from him
She said he was a most peculiar man
He was a most peculiar man
He lived all alone within a house
Within a room, within himself
A most peculiar man
He had no friends, he seldom spoke
And no one in turn ever spoke to him
'Cause he wasn't friendly and he didn't
Care
And he wasn't like them
O, no-o-o!
He was a most peculiar man
He died last Sat-you're-day...
He turned on the gas! and he went to sleep!
With the windows closed!
So he'd never wake up!
To his silent world!
And his tiny room!
And Mrs Reardon says he has a brother somewhere!
Who should be notified so-oo-oon...
And all the people said,
What a shame that he's dead,
But wasn't he a most peculiar man?

My curtains are always closed - I hate daylight. My windows are almost always closed, I have air con. My door isually goes unanswered and I rarely have visitors, maybe once a year or so. We usually hang out with people on our porch.

Doesn't seem weird to me. I am not sociable and like my space and privacy.

BloodyTired · 13/09/2019 22:50

Definitely not that weird...
We rarely open our street facing curtains because 1: the window looks directly out onto our neighbours front garden and 2: the light shines onto the telly and annoys my DP. We have large windows on the other wall which overlook our garden and the fields beyond which are pretty much constantly open.
We also never open any windows as we have a curious but very nervous cat who would love nothing more than to go outside but who we would never see again if he did!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 13/09/2019 22:58

I don’t know how people cope with no windows open! Or curtains for that matter, but I can understand the light/privacy issue with that. I have to have all the windows open all day. And my bedroom window is usually open all night too. Have to have the breeze. Can’t cope with stuffy stagnant air.

littleorangecat22 · 13/09/2019 23:27

Vampire. Possibly werewolf. Leave him be. They just want to fit in.

RedRedBluee · 13/09/2019 23:31

Maybe he works nights?
Maybe he has allergies?
Maybe he has an illness where he’s always cold?

bluebell34567 · 13/09/2019 23:38

does he put bin/recycle out?
