To expect chocolate to taste LIKE CHOCOLATE.

Just bit into a Twix, yes yes I know it’s not real chocolate but it’s friggin vile! I used to really enjoy a twix, nibble around the edges before chomping through the lovely caramel bit. It’s just a flavourless strange oily slick stick I could cry out of frustration. Why can’t they bloody leave things alone, I liked the lidl ones at one point then found them too sweet! So annoyed.

I always use the basic aldi dark choc when making the mumsnet brownies... it’s around 50% cocoa but not too dark. Perfect for the recipe.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 13/09/2019 13:49

I found some Ritter Mill Choc in lidl. Gorgeous. You can't usually find plain Ritter here. Lindt is also good.

Palm oil has ruined chocolate oranges for me and they used to be such a treat at Xmas. Terrible texture and flavour now.

Fieldofgreycorn · 13/09/2019 13:51

It would be more accurately described as ‘vegolate’ rather than chocolate as it’s vegetable fat flavoured with a bit of cocoa.

I can only do quality chocolate or it’s just not worth it imo.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 13/09/2019 13:55

Ritter has no palm oil.
I miss how dairy milk used to be, it was so hard!

JuniLoolaPalooza · 13/09/2019 13:56

Oh and the James Cadbury stuff is nice but hard to buy a bundle without weird flavours. I do not want Earl Grey chocolate!

Weezol · 13/09/2019 13:58

Kraft Mondalez have ruined any chocolate product they touch.

I'm off to Google ' chocolate made by monks at Caldey Island in Pembrokeshire.'

RandomlyChosenName · 13/09/2019 14:02

I tried to melt some Cadbury’s eggs for cooking with. IT DOESN’T MELT! It just formed into a weird crumbly but not crumbly ball.

Very disturbing. If you can’t melt it, it can’t be chocolate...

Toomuchgoingon · 13/09/2019 14:12

Just purchased some of the Caldey Island stuff to try. I hope it lives up to the recommendation.

sadpigeon · 13/09/2019 14:14

user1497207191 I used to find that too but a few weeks ago bought a twirl and it was so disgusting I threw it away after 1 bite. Tastes as awful as all the other cadburys chocolate now.

ScrambledSmegs · 13/09/2019 14:18

I turned into a bit of an obsessive over milk chocolate that tastes like milk chocolate. I ended up buying massive bags of decent dark and milk chocolate drops (Callebaut, not Valrhona as I can’t stretch to that no matter how good) from Amazon, then tempering it and mixing the dark and milk to reach the flavour I wanted. Poured it into a silicone bar mould and let it cool.

It was lovely, but loads of effort, and quite frankly the occasional bar of Ritter or Milka is ok, if a bit weirdly waxy.

tommycockles · 13/09/2019 14:22

I'd be interested to know if Cadbury sales have fallen in recent years. No one seems to like it.

Delatron · 13/09/2019 14:24

Yes it would be interesting to know. I hope so!

Abraid2 · 13/09/2019 14:29

Ritter is indeed a good chocolate. I wish I hadn't now remembered that as the shop in the next village sells it...

MrsA2015 · 13/09/2019 14:41

I do some chocolate work so have loads of callebaut but sometimes I just fancy an old fashioned chocolate bar. I’m grateful they’re all rank as I don’t buy and eat as much of it anymore! I do have handfuls of the Valle air callets but it’s not the same as a mars bar cut up thin out the fridge Sad

I heart Hotel Chocolat. Lovely stuff, and I don’t mind that it’s expensive because it means I don’t eat it very often, so good for my waistline and wallet.

I lived abroad for a few years and lost about a stone, mainly because I didn’t have the 3pm KitKat visit to the office vending machine every day. Then when I returned to the U.K., I went a bit mad buying all my old favourites but they just didn’t taste right. I thought my taste buds had changed, until I saw other people saying the same thing. The only Cadbury’s products that I find still edible are Fry’s Chocolate Creme and Bournville.

The product I mourn the most is Terrys Chocolate Oranges. I can only assume the recipe changed when they moved production to Poland. There can’t be any cocoa butter in it at all because it is the most disgusting waxiest, non-melty chocolate I’ve ever placed in my mouth. Worse than Hershey’s.

Nutellalovesme · 13/09/2019 15:20

I absolutely loved Cadbury back in the 90s I would always get the fruit & nut or the whole nut. It's such a shame it's ruined Sad

Ledkr · 13/09/2019 15:42

Why do Cadbury buttons still taste OK? Anyone know.?

FrowningFlamingo · 13/09/2019 17:17

Waitrose own brand Belgian chocolate bars. They’re lovely. No palm oil. The fruit and nut one is really good.

MerryBerryCheesecake · 13/09/2019 17:35

I don't even bother any more.

DH bought me a wispa about 3 months ago, it's still in the kitchen gathering dust.

I used to like chocolate a bit but I'd rather eat none than the shite that passes for it these days.

Milk chocolate tastes like sugary gritty powdery oily dirt almost without exception.

Dark chocolate just tastes of evil and disappointment.

I have found a recipe for soft chewy peanut butter cookies that I find scratches a sweet craving. I have to control myself though because they're more or less peanut toffee.

poopofprettycolours · 13/09/2019 18:03

Aldi and Lidl chocolate is nice. I used to go mad for Cadbury buttons but the last packet tasted greasy and sweet with no real flavour.

Pinkarsedfly · 13/09/2019 18:11

Willie’s Cacao is lovely.

Nutellalovesme · 13/09/2019 18:13

Ritter sport chocolate is nice. Lidl used to sell the milk chocolate whole nut one which was a 250g bar for £1.99.
Unfortunately they no longer sell it in the 250g bar! Sooooo disappointing

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 13/09/2019 18:15

Aldis milk chocolate and caramel milk is so nice. I could polish off a bar easily. No palm oil by the looks of the ingredients.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 13/09/2019 18:15

Tony's is great but I love Solkiki for proper chocolate - they trade directly with the farmers so it's super eco-friendly and it tastes amazing. They've won loads of awards too so it's not just me being biased! I met the makers at a trade fair we were both working at and they were really lovely, they're a proper small-scale family business.

solkiki

Myusernameisunique · 13/09/2019 18:56

I’ve just eaten half an200g bar of Cadbury’s wholenut. Literally the only chocolate I like nowadays is Cadbury. I must be a heathen Blush. I do like Aldi chocolate at a push though.
