How do you pronounce the letter H?

How do you pronounce the letter H? Like ‘ach’ or ‘hhach’?

I work in HR and my name begins with H so I have confidently been saying ‘ach’ my whole life, but all of my colleagues say ‘hhach’ so I am starting to doubt myself.

We are all largely from the same region.

It’s driving me a bit crazy!

If we said every word of French origin in the French way, we’d all spend large portions of our day sounding very European!

WhyBirdStop · 10/09/2019 18:59

I live in Essex, where H is dropped from almost everything except Haitch , where it is unnecessarily added. It drives me insane. It's aitch.

Porsche is not English; it is Italian. Yep, alluded to that above.

Umm nope. Porsche is German. If Porsche were an Italian word, it would be pronounced (roughly speaking) 'Porskay'. It's properly pronounced 'por-shuh'. (German teacher here).

Danglingmod · 10/09/2019 19:01

Agreed, Flowery.

I do pronounce questionnaire the French way often but as a joke, really.

Croissant has to be pronounced properly because we don't use it to describe an English thing, as such. Surely if you were de-Frenchifying it, you'd say crescent?

Nonmerci · 10/09/2019 19:02

Aitch, I’m an English teacher.

CherryPavlova · 10/09/2019 19:03

Aitch be a tad estuary if not softened I would think eightch was a better phonetic.

Yes exactly

zxcvhjkl · 10/09/2019 19:09

No it was a typo. Blush

B = bee
V =vee

MildThing · 10/09/2019 19:10

My grandmother who was from Sheffield always said Haitch.

I say Aitch

My kids say Haitch because they go to school in S London and everyone I know from the Caribbean says Haitch and Jamaican South London Patois is now spoken by all teens, as one of their languages anyway.

samandpoppysmummy · 10/09/2019 19:11

aitch

percheron67 · 10/09/2019 19:11

64h. I can differentiate between letters and a rather fast car! The principle is the same - mispronunciation.

beelover · 10/09/2019 19:12

Another Aitch here.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/09/2019 19:14

I’m half Irish.... all Catholic .... still aitch. DH is also half Irish, half Catholic and he says aitch too. We both went to convent schools and even the Irish nuns said aitch.

Whatwouldbigfatfannydo · 10/09/2019 19:14

Haitch here! Always said that and see no need to change. I also say J (eye) and not J (ay) shock horror!
Utterly happy to go on winding up the snobs! WinkGrin

cushioncovers · 10/09/2019 19:15

I Say Hatich 🤷🏻‍♀️

LittleMustelid · 10/09/2019 19:17

Aitch definitely.

MonstranceClock · 10/09/2019 19:17

I’ve never met anyone in real life who says aitch.

LinoleumBlownapart · 10/09/2019 19:24

lazylinguist Porsche is German!! I've spent 40 years thinking they were italian Shock

FenellaVelour · 10/09/2019 19:25

Aitch.

Your colleagues need this treatment:

bibblybop · 10/09/2019 19:27

Aitch!

My gran used to say 'there's no aitch in aitch girls!' which always used to make me laugh as there is one at the end...

But still, it is aitch!

HavelockVetinari · 10/09/2019 19:33

Sigh. This is always a bunfight on here. It's a class marker unfortunately, working class is (usually!) haitch, everyone else says aitch. It doesn't matter, everyone knows what is meant by it, and surely language is just a way to communicate at the end of the day.

ShiveringCoyote · 10/09/2019 19:39

Irish here and I say haitch. Happy to piss off snobs with my haitchness.

NoTheresa · 10/09/2019 19:41

Porsche is German. Yeah, I knew that. Just testing...

DitheringBlidiot · 10/09/2019 19:41

Aitch

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 10/09/2019 19:43

Aitch.
