How do you pronounce the letter H?

How do you pronounce the letter H? Like ‘ach’ or ‘hhach’?

I work in HR and my name begins with H so I have confidently been saying ‘ach’ my whole life, but all of my colleagues say ‘hhach’ so I am starting to doubt myself.

We are all largely from the same region.

It’s driving me a bit crazy!

”I think it comes from a fear of 'dropping your aitches'”

Maybe that’s why I say aitch. A fear of dropping them isn’t something that concerns me... Grin

FrownPrincess · 10/09/2019 15:52

Aitch.

Haitch makes my teeth hitch.

clary · 10/09/2019 15:52

Oh I see lots of others made my point about other letters :)

Yy even my DC say NHS so

AfterSchoolWorry · 10/09/2019 15:52

Irish Haytch.

Aitch sounds Cockney to me!

Hadalifeonce · 10/09/2019 15:54

Aitch, as do DC. Although when DD was about 4, after she started with the Haitch, because that's the way her friends spoke. I corrected her every time; then she corrected DH's BiL when he pronounced it haitch!!!

Ainsl · 10/09/2019 15:57

I say Aitch. I also work in HR and hear so many people say it with a "hhh" sound at the beginning .. I thought maybe it was an England thing and that being from America I was saying it wrong.

skippy67 · 10/09/2019 15:58

Aitch.

FuckOffBoris · 10/09/2019 15:58

Definitely aitch. Though DD has picked up haitch from school and I am barking, "Aitch!" at her each time she says it, but it isn't sinking in.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 10/09/2019 15:58

Aitch.

Smidge001 · 10/09/2019 16:00

Definitely Aitch.

LinoleumBlownapart · 10/09/2019 16:00

Aitch

I'm an aitch snob, I hate hearing haitch in anything but an Irish accent. Luckily I live in the US so I never hear haitch in anything but an Irish accent Grin

FuzzyPuffling · 10/09/2019 16:01

Aitch. Never any other way.
I'm from the East Midlands.

Digitalash · 10/09/2019 16:02

Aitch

WednesdaySpinner · 10/09/2019 16:03

Just reading through these, if talking about HR I would say haitch R but would say N aitch S when referring to the NHS. I am the person described by flowery and I had never realised!

Idontwanttotalk · 10/09/2019 16:06

I pronounce it properly - aitch.

I have a friend who drops her aitches and inserts them when not needed. She's lovely but it really grates on me.

DriftingLeaves · 10/09/2019 16:07

Well done, people of MN. You haven't let me down.

Delatron · 10/09/2019 16:07

Aitch and the other way is incorrect. Nothing that can be blamed on geographical areas...

Staycalmandscream · 10/09/2019 16:08

This is one of my pet hates.

It's Aitch.

Haitch is the sound (h-uh) and the name (aitch) said together. I am irrationally irritated by this!! Wrong wrong wrong.

Shodan · 10/09/2019 16:09

Definitely aitch.

But at least 3 of my friends say haitch. One of them is a nurse, one a carer and one a police officer so the NHS is talked about often. And yes, they say Enn Haitch Ess. It just sounds so clumsy Confused

fourquenelles · 10/09/2019 16:09

Aitch. Always aitch. Haitch makes my teeth itch. Tried to explain it to the head of HR in an organisation I worked in who insisted on answering the phone "Haitch R". Got a blank look. Snob alert : I think "haitch" is common. Sorry. Blush

Hilda40 · 10/09/2019 16:11

But if your name is Hastings you wouldn't say Astings would you.

thecalmorchid · 10/09/2019 16:12

Aitch! Always.

My husband and family are from the north and all say Haitch. It makes my teeth set on edge but I'm a lone one. I can hardly go correcting the in-laws really.

FallenSky · 10/09/2019 16:13

This is me too! I've never even noticed it before. I know it's aitch, when sounding out the alphabet I will say aitch, if someone points to the letter and asks what it is I will say it's an aitch, NHS is N aitch S. But HR is Haitch Ar. No idea why. Said it multiple times out loud and "aitch ar" sounds ridiculous. Even though it's obviously the right way to say it.

Thegingerpig · 10/09/2019 16:13

Aitch is definitely correct.
