How do you pronounce the letter H?

How do you pronounce the letter H? Like ‘ach’ or ‘hhach’?

I work in HR and my name begins with H so I have confidently been saying ‘ach’ my whole life, but all of my colleagues say ‘hhach’ so I am starting to doubt myself.

We are all largely from the same region.

It’s driving me a bit crazy!

Other words I pronounce in ways that make my family roll their eyes: turquoise (oi as in petit pois, not oil) Lidl (leedle) Chile, schadenfreude, Volkswagen, Citroën, questionnaire, lingerie, Chopard and Chopin, Thierry Mugler, and, of course, Porsche! Not forgetting Bayeux, as in tapestry, which is nothing to do with any bay on any map. Bah- yer (but don't sound the r).

JollyRocker · 10/09/2019 17:58

It’s definitely AITCH

Danglingmod · 10/09/2019 18:03

Wait, how are people mispronouncing questionnaire?

Danglingmod · 10/09/2019 18:03

And of course it's aitch.

AlexaAmbidextra · 10/09/2019 18:04

The voice on the answerphone at my GP surgery used to tell us to call N Haitch S Direct. I did try to correct them when I went in but the reception staff looked at me as though I was mad.

On another note, one of my patients used to tell me he’d seen the thysio. It took me a while to realise he meant the physio but thought he was saying it the posh way. 😂

LinoleumBlownapart · 10/09/2019 18:04

Qurstionnaire? Wait! What? How is that said?

ProhibitedRodent · 10/09/2019 18:05

@zxcvhjkl Why are you pronouncing VHS as Bee-aitch-ess? V is pronounced as Vee

AlpacaGoodnight · 10/09/2019 18:06

Properly! So Aitch

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 10/09/2019 18:13

I'm a bit of a hybrid mix of my Irish and English parents. The letter alone I normally say haytch. But if I talk about he nhs it's always Enn-aitch-ess. I blame the parents Grin

Mother40 · 10/09/2019 18:19

When I was sitting watch my child play.football the other week, another child was spelling out a word to their mum. The child said 'didn't and the mum told them it was wrong and should be haich! I was tempted to let her know she was wrong!

Mother40 · 10/09/2019 18:20

That should say the child said aitch!

Mimilamore · 10/09/2019 18:24

Drives me mad.. it is aitch, We don't say feff or sess...
Teachers where I work say haitch, interviewers on TV and radio! The list is endless.
Grrrh

Motherinlawsdung · 10/09/2019 18:25

It’s haitch if you are Irish and Catholic. For everyone else it’s aitch, and you are likely to be viewed negatively if you say haitch.

NearlyGranny · 10/09/2019 18:25

Questionnaire is a French import, so Kestionnaire, with a rolled r at the end. But my family threatens to roll me in a blanket and stow me in the loft if I say it.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 10/09/2019 18:28

and you are likely to be viewed negatively if you say haitch.

Or simply viewed as a catholic.

mumof2xo · 10/09/2019 18:29

It’s haitch if you are Irish and Catholic

I’m Irish and Protestant. Shame.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 10/09/2019 18:29

I’m Irish and Protestant. Shame.

Oh you little rebel, you. 😁

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/09/2019 18:37

My name begins with H, and I say it’s Haitch! Aitch is fecking lazy!! And when people say my name they even leave the bloody H out! 😡

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/09/2019 18:38

I mean some people leave the H out, not all...

Pinkkahori · 10/09/2019 18:38

I'm Irish (not Northern though) and say haitch.
The thing i always wonder about these threads is why so many Mumsnetters have so much cause to use the word aitch/haitch. I have no idea how most people I know say it.
I presume since I now live relatively close to where I grew up and went to school that they mostly pronounce it like I do but honestly I can't say I've ever noticed.

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/09/2019 18:45

Siri says haitch for lowercase h, and capital haitch if you use a capital letter! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/09/2019 18:46

I’m northern but not Irish, and it’s still Haitch!

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/09/2019 18:47

DD also says Haitch, the cat just looked at me weirdly! 😂😂

rubberduckyyouretheone · 10/09/2019 18:51

Many years ago when I was a teen going to mixed religion events in NI getting someone to say the alphabet was a way of finding out religion for some. This took me a while to catch on I was as ditzy then as now.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 10/09/2019 18:54

rubberduckyyouretheone 🤣 It took a while for the penny to drop with me too! It was usually “what school did you go to?” 😉
