How do you pronounce the letter H?

How do you pronounce the letter H? Like ‘ach’ or ‘hhach’?

I work in HR and my name begins with H so I have confidently been saying ‘ach’ my whole life, but all of my colleagues say ‘hhach’ so I am starting to doubt myself.

We are all largely from the same region.

It’s driving me a bit crazy!

Haitch is only said by Irish Catholics? ?WOW! My upbringinging was Irish Catholic so my haitching must make that apparent every day. What a very odd statement to make by that pp....

Bluesheep8 · 10/09/2019 19:47

I know lots of people who say Haitch. And they're not Irish OR Catholic. I'm baffled by that post

NoTheresa · 10/09/2019 19:53

CherryPavlova

Aitch be a tad estuary if not softened I would think eightch was a better phonetic.

I do say “eightch” - although that certainly IS a new “phonetic” Grin.

Surely you don’t imagine we all talk like Eliza Doolittle during her first elocution lessons? 😂

CendrillonSings · 10/09/2019 19:53

I’ve never met anyone in real life who says aitch.

Incredible!

NoTheresa · 10/09/2019 19:54

Whaaaaaat?

millimollimandi · 10/09/2019 19:57

Oooh this drives me NUTS - it's aitch - as found in the English Dictionary - but everyone where I live (SW) says Haitch. Hubby said it the other day and just a look got him apologising - weird thing is he hates it too!!!

MildThing · 10/09/2019 20:00

Well said Havelock

It is a dialect thing and therefore pretty snobby for people to be so snotty about it.

But oh, look, it’s Irish people and people from the Caribbean who often say Haitch......

AryaStarkWolf · 10/09/2019 20:02

Irish here and I say haitch. Happy to piss off snobs with my haitchness.

Hear hear!

Bluesheep8 · 10/09/2019 20:07

Got it in one mildthing couldn't have put it better

FrangipaniBlue · 10/09/2019 20:09

Haitch for the letter but I drop the H when I say a word beginning with H

I KNOW this is wrong but in my accent/neck of the woods it's just what we do!!

A friend and I were once told "you don't have a T or an H between you two!!!"

Babysharkisanearworm · 10/09/2019 20:10

Aitch. It boils my.piss hearing haytch

FrangipaniBlue · 10/09/2019 20:11

Just reading through these, if talking about HR I would say haitch R but would say N aitch S when referring to the NHS. I am the person described by flowery and I had never realised

Yep. Also me!!!

OhTheRoses · 10/09/2019 20:15

Aitch. Because that is correct.

It's also an hotel pronounced with a silent aitch.

Please don't speak of aks. How can ask be pronounced aks. Just look where the letters fall.

titnomatani · 10/09/2019 20:16

From Lancashire- we/I say 'haitch'. Why is that wrong?

titnomatani · 10/09/2019 20:18

Oh and I say en HAITCH ess and HAITCH for Harry when spelling things over the telephone.

MindyStClaire · 10/09/2019 20:31

These threads aren't good for my blood pressure.

I live in NI, broadly speaking, protestants say aitch (British English) and Catholics say haitch (Irish English). Commenting on the difference would be seen as sectarian and would probably get you called to HR (whichever way you pronounced that...) in the workplace.

I can't get over the bigotry on this thread. Someone actually said she hadn't hired someone based on their dialect! Like. Wtf. How has that post gone on uncommented on.

Maybe if this is something you judge people on, have a think about why, and what that says about your unconscious bias.

Oh, and yes, I say En Haitch Ess.

WombleOwl · 10/09/2019 20:33

I don't think it's a class thing at all and possibly not even regional. I'm working class from the north east and growing up everyone said aitch, I never, ever heard anyone say haitch until I moved to the north west and hadn't been aware it was a thing.

Sooverthemill · 10/09/2019 20:33

It is 'aitch' but some regional accents have is aspirated so it's 'haitch'. To me that sounds totally wrong but it's the way lots of people say it so it's not incorrect

greenlavender · 10/09/2019 20:35

Aitch

foxtiger · 10/09/2019 21:31

HAITCH for Harry when spelling things over the telephone

Whether you pronounce it aitch or haitch, it's H for Hotel in the usual spelling alphabet.

envelopeofpubes · 10/09/2019 21:45

It’s aitch. Only barbarians say haitch!

MindyStClaire · 10/09/2019 21:50

Only barbarians say haitch!

Thanks ever so much. Sincerely, Ireland.

FFS.

RiftGibbon · 10/09/2019 21:58

Aitch.
For anyone unsure, look in the dictionary and you'll find it listed under A.Grin

titnomatani · 10/09/2019 22:01

Whether you pronounce it aitch or haitch, it's H for Hotel in the usual spelling alphabet.

Clearly, I have my own phonetic code going on!

ethelredonagoodday · 10/09/2019 22:03

It's aitch. Despite my children trying to tell me otherwise. 😬🤦🏻‍♀️
