AIBU to have try for a natural birth after 4c sections?

I've just found out that I'm pregnant with DC #4. My previous 3 DC were all c sections, the 1st emergency, the next 2 elective. I want to try for a natural birth this time, as I know c sections get progressively more risky the more you have. DH says I'm being ridiculous and says a c section is the safest option. I see both options as having risks, so why not take the least damaging one?
AIBU for wanting to at least try for a natural birth? WWYD?

Sorry, just realised the typo in title - I've only had 3 c sections, this will potentially be my 4th.

Hospital told me that after doing 2 c sections, they would not support me having a natural birth due to such a high risk of uterine rupture. And my c sections were planned, straight forward, no complications.

I would have a c-section. I have had 4.

With one of my pregnancies I had a scheduled c-section planned but went into labour a month early. I went to hospital as I started bleeding and they did the c-section immediately as I had a uterine scar rupture most probably caused by the contractions. I needed a blood transfusion and the recovery from that c-section was much longer than my other 3 c-sections (which were 2 planned and one emergency).

The risk of uterine scar rupture is low but I wouldn't risk it, especially after 3 c-sections.

not one up man ship but i had 6 cs and there was no way i was going to try natural birth after the 1st but i was taken out of my hands as dd was big and in breech.

ClareBear2019 · 10/09/2019 11:14

How many c sections can a woman have? My previous ones were textbook, no complications, but the last consultant I saw with DC3 said he didn't recommend more than 3 c sections. I'd like to have the option of mor children, and I'm worried an elective will put an end to that.

I had 3 natural births after CS I had to push for this choice because they were concerned about rupture and said after x-ray that my pelvis was too small. I had a 9lb 4oz baby!

However after 3 CS I would think that would increase the risk. Talk to your midwife.

Thanks for the link Orange

After having caesarean, there are risks associated with a vaginal birth. You need to talk to your consultant.

Bowerbird5 · 10/09/2019 11:17

We were told four (NNEB training )was max three was better but I see littlepaddypaws has had 6. I would think that contained some increased element of risk each time.

ClareBear2019 · 10/09/2019 11:18

My midwife has said she would only consider a natural birth if I go into labour before 38 weeks as baby will be smaller then, and if I am at the hospital being fully monitered the entire time.

YANBU.

I'd speak to an obstetrician. Only person whose opinion I'd trust in your shoes.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 10/09/2019 11:20

I think the general rule is 4 c sections is about the upper limit from my friends experience.

You can discuss with a consultant but I wouldn’t push for one, I think your DH is correct and a CS would be safest.

Passthecherrycoke · 10/09/2019 11:24

Your consultant won’t supoort this. I think you’re mad tbh. What makes you think you’ll get a VBAC this time? Even if you persuade them to let you try, you’ll be whipped down to that theatre at the first sign of heart dipping etc.

Also I don’t mean to sound harsh but when your consultant said you could only have 3 sections he meant don’t have any more babies, not that the next ones should be VBAC. Obviously it’s none of their business how many babies you have but I expect they were just trying to advise

Whattodowith · 10/09/2019 11:24

@ClareBear2019 not sure if there’s a limit on the amount. A friend of mine has had five c-sections before she got sterilised. I think Katie Price has had five c-sections too.

CandyLeBonBon · 10/09/2019 11:25

I went into labour after 2 elective and uncomplicated c-sections because both my boys were breech. I ended up having an emergency section with my dd as my scar started to rupture. It's a very real possibility op.

Ohmygoodnessreally · 10/09/2019 11:26

@OrangeSlices998 just read that link in horror. There are about 17 things wrong with what that ridiculous woman said. Can’t believe you’d post such dangerous tripe.

CandyLeBonBon · 10/09/2019 11:26

I was also advised not to have a 4th because of uterine wear and tear. It's not a ziploc bag in there!

yellowallpaper · 10/09/2019 11:26

After 3 c sections I think the risk of uterine rupture is far more catastrophic to mother and baby than any risk from a 4th c section. I think what your dr meant was not to have more children rather than the delivery method. That's how I took it following my 2nd c section. I would compare the risks of another c section, which I think would be minimal to the above.

ClareBear2019 · 10/09/2019 11:27

I've spoken with both the midwife and the consultant at the hospital and the risks for either option seem to be about even. The biggest concern was if I were to go into labour and not get to the hospital in time, if I ruptured it would likely be fatal. This is tonve avoided obviously. The midwide did suggest induction at 38 weeks, and at the first sign of anything bad I'd be whisked off for a section. The consultant just seemed rude and abrupt, as if I'd got pregnant just to make things difficult. It's been 7 years since my last section, if that makes a difference.

You can have up to 4 c-sections where I live, and that’s how many I had.

What do you think would happen to a woman pregnant with baby number five? Confused

autumnkate · 10/09/2019 11:29

There isn’t a limit on the number of c sections you have. 3 (or maybe max 4) is the highest number they recommend but if a woman who has had 3 (or 4) gets pregnant again then of course she has to have a c section- there really is little choice. Most hospitals won’t even offer Vbac after 2 c sections due to increased risks to mother and baby.
