Obese and pudding without sugar

Hi, I suppose my aibu is aibu to ask what people have as a sweet evening snack / pudding, that does not contain sugar or sweetners? I'm so bored of just having fruit or fruit with nut butter. I just can't think of anything else - except plain greek yog and fruit. Any suggestions? I've cut out sugar as I'm very overweight (have ptsd and used eating as a coping strategy, have never been overweight before). Any suggestions v v much appreciated! Thanks!

Slightly off topic, but I've always avoided eating fruit after a meal because apparently the stomach uses different enzymes to breakdown fruit and proteins. The belief was/is that fruit will sit in your stomach fermenting behind the juicy steak, or whatever, being digested. I don't really know if it is true, but it has stuck with me.

As for desserts, I'm another who doesn't really have them, but if I want something sweet it will be some dark chocolate or a homemade truffle or mousse. Greek yogurt and honey with a bit of chocolate granola (from Lidl) could be nice? If you went low carb then you could make a low-carb cheesecake for dessert?

Good luck on your journey to a healthier you x

Freeze sugar free lemon squash to make lollies

WindsorDuchess · 10/09/2019 16:05

For my treat I blend together frozen fruit, teaspoon of honey and some Greek yogurt and put it in ice lolly moulds. I make twelve lollies at a time and it only take about 15 minutes.

@Snacksnacksnack
I'm like you OP, I need that sweet nibble after tea.

My cravings were satisfied by 30g of dry crunchy nut cornflakes. Eaten like crisps.

Another go to was home popped corn sprayed with fry-lite sunflower oil and sprinkled with sweetener.

Both are low calorie and stop the cravings that lead to destruction!

Thank you @alittleprivacy, I knew about oats (am coeliac), and I will give it a go (being careful with my yoghurt!).

Frozen grapes rolled in sugar free jelly crystals. Amazing

Babdoc · 10/09/2019 16:15

I never eat puddings. They’re usually just empty calories with no nutritional value, which push your blood sugar up, leading to an insulin surge, which causes a blood sugar drop and a craving for more sugar.
You will never wean yourself off this sugar craving if you keep supplying it via puddings.
It’s like asking us to suggest a smaller dose of heroin after dinner, when you’re trying to ditch a drug habit!
Have plenty of slow release food in your dinner - whole grain brown rice with lots of green veg, for example, to keep you feeling full. If you’re desperate for a snack before bed, have one wholemeal cracker with a small cube of cheese, rather than something sugary. Eventually you’ll lose your sweet tooth.

Stravapalava · 10/09/2019 16:28

I have a massive sweet tooth and I find if i'm craving sugar, if I have a gherkin, pickled onion or some kind of branston pickle / piccalili type thing, it completely kills the craving. Sounds mad, but it works.

Rabbitsandtennis · 10/09/2019 17:04

Cheese and apple, chopped up in a little bowl is my fave. Ideally with some red wine. Dates are best fruit substitute for sugary puddings as they’re really sweet.

Tbh though I mostly rely on online grocery orders (easy to be disciplined when it’s not in front of you) and knowing that even if I’m craving chocolate, I’m usually too lazy to nip to the shop in the evening if I don’t have it at home.

Catsick36 · 10/09/2019 18:07

I do yoga to distract me from eating in the evening. I would eat All the snacks otherwise.

bakebeans · 10/09/2019 18:19

Have you thought about reducing the carbohydrate portions in your foods. All carbs turn to sugar so a small portion chocolate cake for example could be lower in carbs and calories than a large portion of cereal

MyHeartIsInCornwall · 10/09/2019 18:22

Roll grapes in sugar free jelly crystals and freeze them. I can only manage a few as it takes so long to chew them and they fill you up fast.

Lunde · 10/09/2019 18:27
  1. blend frozen berries (still frozen) with greek yoghurt for instant ice cream (needs to be eaten straight away)
  2. blend a banana with 150mls of milk for a banana milkshake
  3. make up sugar free jelly and replace ½ of the water with milk or yoghurt for a no added sugar mousse

When your insulin is spiked it makes you feel as if you are hungry and when this hormone is spiked it inhibits fat loss.

This is the main problem you have to try to keep your insulin levels stable and then this will stop you feeling hungry.

You will be amazed that by cutting carbs or fasting for 16hrs how quickly the body adjusts and you do not feel hungry or want carby foods. I say this from someone who have a very sweet tooth.

LazyFace · 10/09/2019 19:36

Neverender: I disagree, it's completely normal to eat a dessert every day. I have all my life and so do a lot of people I know.

I have one pudding a week, usually on a Saturday night, and as much of it as I want. That way, it’s more of a treat.

joystir59 · 10/09/2019 21:18

An orange, an apple or some pineapple, strawberries in the summer, or other soft fruits- we eat a lot of fruit! We are both very slim. Never eat pudding. About once a week I will eat a square or two of dark chocolate.

sqirrelfriends · 10/09/2019 21:24

I know it's fruit again but pineapple sliced under the grill for a few minutes is delicious with a bit of Greek yogurt. Even nicer with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

joystir59 · 10/09/2019 21:31

Well I'm a really healthy BMI and I eat lots of fruit every day, especially apples. Fruit, in my experience, does not make a person fat and used to traditionally be eaten as desert at the end of the evening meal.
