Obese and pudding without sugar

Hi, I suppose my aibu is aibu to ask what people have as a sweet evening snack / pudding, that does not contain sugar or sweetners? I'm so bored of just having fruit or fruit with nut butter. I just can't think of anything else - except plain greek yog and fruit. Any suggestions? I've cut out sugar as I'm very overweight (have ptsd and used eating as a coping strategy, have never been overweight before). Any suggestions v v much appreciated! Thanks!

I have some dried apricots - 5 is a good size and low gi so no sugar rush. The organic ones are brilliant and have a deep caramel Flavour that's not too sweet. That or a piece of dark chocolate - doesn't stop me falling off the wagon but does help the frequency.

In a Brazilian restaurant I had grilled pineapple with cinnamon. I don't think there was any added sugar. It was absolutely delicious and I keep meaning to try it at home.

Cinammon and raisin bagel thin. Activia yoghurt. Scotch Pancake with fruit and Ff yoghurt.

These are all low sugar not no sugar.

stucknoue · 10/09/2019 10:53

Try and stick to only having dessert on weekends/special occasions. Plain fruit is the only option in our house weekdays

longtompot · 10/09/2019 11:21

@MeganTheVegan if you read the ops posts, she said this on Monday at 21:58pm :)

I know I don't need pudding but emotionally I need it right now. Hopefully over time, combined with therapy and no sugar I won't feel the need for it but right now it's giving me a level of stability.

@Snacksnacksnack Try buttermint tea. Its like having a Murray mint without all the sugar Grin

After my dinner I usually have either an apple which is 60 calories & low GI or a Petit Filous which is 41 calories & contains 1 tsp sugar.

I have a sweet tooth but stick to a low sugar low fat low GI calorie counted diet.
My body fat is shocking at 40% and I need to lose 2 stone.

But if I really crave a small chocolate I just include it in my calories.

I can relate to emotional eating - I used to binge eat all the time.
Even now that I'm dieting I tend to stick to the same foods & get obsessive about what I eat - I will always have disordered eating.

I think evenings at home are definitely the hardest time to try not to overeat- the trick is to watch what you have in the home.

Onken set yoghurt (the plain one in blue pot) is nice with blueberries.

Nice porridge oats with milk, add a bit of cream, then add some chocolate chips. It feels like you're getting chocolate but in reality the chips are not very large at all compared to a bar. Have that cold.

Try different things like those black crackers (grainy ones) with strong cheese and different sauces or chutneys - they're so strong you only need a little bit, with a garnish.

Kulfi (the pistachio one is nice). You can buy it in most supermarkets.

I wouldn't want to end my day's food on a sugary desert thing because surely it will keep you awake? So try to balance it with something else.

Peanut butter and raspberry jam on toast with butter - portion size is key here, but that would keep you feeling balanced for a long time.

Good luck.

Oh. Also, the popcorn in Tesco - sweet and salty one. It's in a yellow bag by the crisps single serve (the ones in the meal deals).

I haven't had pudding regularly since primary school. Do you still feel hungry after your main dinner?

NannyR · 10/09/2019 13:14

meganthevegan speaking from personal experience, most people who struggle with their weight know exactly what they should be eating to be a healthy, normal weight, they no doubt have tons of books and diet plans, they know that pudding is bad for you and not necessary. Sometimes weight problems go a lot deeper than just not knowing what is healthy to eat.

I've often had advice from health professionals saying that I should keep carrot sticks and cherry tomatoes in the fridge handy, in case I want a snack - in my opinion that's a bit like saying to someone who has a problem with alcohol to keep a jug of iced water handy in case they are thirsty. I don't eat because I'm hungry, just like an alcoholic doesn't drink because they are thirsty - I eat because I have emotional issues linked to food, a couple of carrot sticks aren't going to solve that. It's something I am working on and getting under control but comments that point out the obvious like "just don't eat it" are not that helpful.

Sugar free raspberry Jelly. When making pur in frozen raspberries and serve with muller light chocolate fix.

Booksandwine80 · 10/09/2019 13:25

@123chocolate

Are you this patronising in real life?! Aren’t you a gem Hmm

Parsley65 · 10/09/2019 13:44

I can relate to this!
There's nothing I'd like more than to curl up in front of the tv in the evening with a bowl of sticky toffee pudding with custard Blush
However, I find that if I eat an apple and then brush my teeth, the sweet craving disappears.

After a couple of hours I have a low calorie hot chocolate drink, which I 'eat' with a spoon (so very slowly), then brush my teeth again.
Good luck

Ten calorie jelly. Amazing for a craving!

RuffleCrow · 10/09/2019 14:41

Keto - your body has evolved to process fructose - we haven't evolved to process refined white sugar - unless Darwin made some glaring errors. Your liver will be involved whatever type you eat and will be working even harder to process the fat you're adding in.

@keto as someone with liver issues I cannot eat high fat. however whole fruit in moderation is fine.

keto can be not the ideal diet (understatement) for some people.

I make frothy hot milk for DC with a few drops of vanilla essence and a sprinkling of cinnamon. No sugar, but the vanilla tricks the mnd into thinking it tastes sweet.
I do the same with porridge - made with milk and vanilla essence, it tastes sweet. So maybe it would work in rice pudding made with milk and vanilla essence with a sprinkling of nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and if you want, add mashed banana, chopped dates or sultanas to the milk for sweetness.
Also there are some seriously good sugar free granolas on the market. But they are quite high calorie - full of nuts, coconut and oats, so best taken after hard exercise or as a main meal not a snack if you are looking to lose weight.

Two great things to have nearby are

Ice lollys in the freezer
And
Sugar less lollipops.

They take a bit of licking and can the craving.

Good luck OP💐👏
