To think Brexit has damaged the country's mental health?

I know it's damaged mine but my job was under threat (colleagues lost their jobs instead) because of Brexit so not surprising. I think Brexit has caused huge stress, anxiety and anger in the country. David Cameron should be ashamed.

People like Cameron and Johnson don't do "ashamed". They've spent their entire lives being told they are superior and other sorts of people don't matter.

demelza82 · 09/09/2019 08:33

YANBU - it's created permanent cultural fissures - no doubt it will affect mental health and that's without even considering the personal effect it's having on the practicalities of our lives

Ohflippineck · 09/09/2019 08:34

YANBU. It colours everything atm. Hard for people to make long-term decisions.

ShatnersWig · 09/09/2019 08:36

Yes. Absolutely.

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/09/2019 08:38

Yes. Most people didn't really care about the EU before the referendum. Now it's a massive cultural chasm which basically splits the country in two. Cameron should be in jail.

Sallycinnamum · 09/09/2019 08:39

Yes it has been incredibly damaging. I feel the whole country is just so angry all the time now.

I don't recognise the country I've lived in all my life and I really don't think it's going to better for a long, long time.

AgnesNaismith · 09/09/2019 08:39

YANBU - on a personal and societal level I’ve found this to be true.

BeyondMyWits · 09/09/2019 08:42

(Caveat - my job, my husband's job etc are not affected, we own our home mortgage free and no major health issues other than aging...)

Brexit hasn't happened yet...

my head is firmly in the sand... no point worrying til there is something to actually worry about... quite happy here with sandy ears...

Oranginna · 09/09/2019 08:45

I only encounter the anger on the Internet. Not in real life.

whatshallIdo1 · 09/09/2019 08:45

I think it has and it hasn't. It's created uncertainty particularly with regard to jobs which of course causes worry and stress. It's also polarised opinions within families and friends (speaking from experience, DH and I can no longer discuss it with our in-laws as we are so widely opposed there's no middle ground or room for healthy discussion, it just descends straight into rows and mud slinging). But the one positive to draw from this is that suddenly everyone is showing an interest and, in many cases, a much better understanding of British politics, which in my view is actually a good thing. People are standing up for their beliefs and getting involved and opening their minds a little further than they have before. The whole thing's a shit show, obviously, but it's very educational and enlightening.

I should have enabling voting, I might have got 100% agreement which might have cheered me up for five minutes.

Brexit I believe has caused a problem with the mental health of the country.
But life has changed so much now and so fast that it is not the only thing.
I believe it is the better off who will be affected.by Brexit which makes a change as those not better off have had less chances for quite a while.
Look at the cost of housing for an example.

Leapyearlover · 09/09/2019 08:52

YANBU
I am a Brit in the Eu. Three years of uncertainty. Not knowing whether we have to abandon our plans to retire in the UK (EU spouse). Not knowing whether I will be able to continue living where I am under the same conditions (I am on a waiting list for an operation and if we are not in the EU when I get to the top, will I still be eligible?) Hundreds of euros spent on trying to maintain the status quo, stay in my house in teh same country as my children. All of this stress and expense and I wasn't even given a vote. I want compensation.

leckford · 09/09/2019 08:56

No one I know talks about Brexit they are more concerned about the disaster Corbyn and his communist team might cause

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 09/09/2019 09:00

Quite honestly it’s made me feel really anxious, it’s like another worry I can’t switch off....No deal will be horrendous. Rascism and aggression we have experienced is heart breaking, but this is our home, wedont have anywhere else to go.

Kazzyhoward · 09/09/2019 09:00

Trouble was brewing for years/decades before the referendum. The country had been divided for a LONG term, and so had Parliament, but successive govts tried to put a lid on it. Anyone who dared to suggest unlimited immigration was declared a racist - don't forget Brown's "bigotted woman" comment years before the referendum - it summed up the Govt's attitude perfectly and was probably the single most important moment that led to Farage/UKIP gaining widespread popularity.

Kazzyhoward · 09/09/2019 09:02

No one I know talks about Brexit

Same here. In real life, it's never mentioned. Maybe it's a North/South thing, be here in the North, no-one seems to be too bothered one way or another.

CrapTVAddict · 09/09/2019 09:04

I'm in the north and it's constantly on towns community Facebook pages full of hatred and anger usually leave voters threatening local MPs

Actionhasmagic · 09/09/2019 09:08

Yes it has yanbu

Cheeseoncrumpets · 09/09/2019 09:11

YANBU I feel quite angry about it all actually. David Cameron should hang his head in shame, how fucking dare he cause all this mess and then sod off to leave someone else to sort it all out.

I dont know much about the private school system, but Eton college seems like nothing more than an entitled, arrogant over privileged cunt factory. Am I right?

Kazzyhoward · 09/09/2019 09:11

That's on Facebook - I was talking about real life, i.e. people talking to eachother face to face in normal domestic/family/friends/work situations.

Facebook and other internet sites isn't representative of real life.

The anti-EU movement was growing. If Cameron hadn't called the referendum, a different PM would have done, whether Tory or Labour. UKIP was a threat to both major parties.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 09/09/2019 09:16

My job still is under threat from Brexit, but I'm fine rocks back and forth

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/09/2019 09:18

"UKIP was a threat to both major parties."

Were they though, really? They've only ever had two MPs. What they mainly seemed to have was a shouty little man who got a disproportionate amount of air time.
