To think husband should dress up for superhero party?

We've been invited to a superhero party next weekend as a family, my daughter is really excited and even my husband was starting to get into it and bought a Spiderman costume on Amazon (I got Captain Marvel and my daughter Pink Batgirl...)

Today was the big try on and the problem started when he couldn't reach to zip up the back of his costume by himself. No problem, I did it for him today, but he says I won't be there at the party if he needs the little boys room.

He's making a really big deal of this and has gone off the idea entirely now, and won't even talk about just buying something else.

I think he sees it as some kind of personal defeat and he would wear this one if he could crack it himself. He's certainly been trying... but unless his arms grow 2 inches this week I can't reply on him figuring it out! (and yes watching him try is absolutely hilarious!!)

AIBU or should he just wear it and ask for a hand if he needs it?

Put a tag on the zip.

Patchworksack · 08/09/2019 19:36

Sew a ribbon on the zip (like a triathlon wetsuit) so he can reach.

JollyRocker · 08/09/2019 19:36

How long is the party. He can go to the little boys room before and after surely?

RachelEss93 · 08/09/2019 19:42

Thanks - we've been trying to put something on the zip but can't get anything to work. It's like a teardrop(?) zip or one that doesn't have a hole in it so tieing on something strong enough isn't working.

He's hopping around the bedroom just now trying to magically reach it. I saw him trying to get it on again so I just walked up behind him and pulled it to the top and said he'll have to figure it out to get it off now! Deciding how long to wait before I help, might get him to empty the dishwasher first...

Sew a black string onto the zip with a big plastic spider hanging off it, so it so it looks like part of the costume.

XXcstatic · 08/09/2019 19:47

my daughter is really excited

If he'd rather let his daughter down than ask for help with the top of a zip, he's a twat - sorry, OP.

No apology... this is exactly my point!

All gone quiet now, no request for unzipping yet. Unsure if he's mastered it or sitting up there feeling sorry for himself in costume...

But surely every other man at the party will have the same problem? There will probably be a queue of them all helping each other out. Or a queue of disgruntled wives outside the toilets, ready to assist their struggling partners.

RachelEss93 · 08/09/2019 20:28

I'm not sure if other men will be the same or not. I can reach zips (my own costume even has one) but I don't know if it's harder for men? Are they less flexible? Anybody seen their partner reach (or not reach) a zip up their own back before!?

He's out of it now btw... drum roll... suspense.... I had to help him. He eventually came and asked so I obliged without too much comedy to make him realise what a big deal this isn't! He says he's going to work on stretches and give it another shot tomorrow...

This is hilarious

RachelEss93 · 08/09/2019 21:24

It was so funny watching him, so near, yet so far!

Put him in the costume, get him to rip the top half off and paint him green. Though possibly not permanently.

Jente · 08/09/2019 22:07

He could always stick some butter knives to his fingers and go as Wolverine instead.

FadedRed · 08/09/2019 22:23

Do you mean he can’t reach the zip? Tell him to start to pull down the zip from the top, reaching over his shoulder, undo the zip about six inches, then he will be able to reach it from underneath and pull it down the whole way IYSWIM.

RachelEss93 · 08/09/2019 22:45

That's exactly how I do mine @FadedRed and he's been trying it like that already and it doesn't work for him :(

For unzipping he pushes it down as far as he can from the top, but then he just can't reach up that far to grab it from below. The tips of his fingers must be an inch or so from the zip so he's a fair bit short of actually grabbing it.

He's adamant he's going to do some stretches or something tomorrow that will mean he can reach it so time will tell... open to suggestions of what I should make him do in exchange for my help when he gets stuck again...

Sew or hot glue the ribbon to the zip if no where to tie on :)

Durgasarrow · 09/09/2019 16:46

I hate costumes

HepKestrel · 09/09/2019 16:49

Clark Kent?

LolaSmiles · 09/09/2019 16:49

I hate fancy dress and would be grumpy if someone was pushing me into doing it. Then again I'm a misery guts on this topic.

I totally understand not wanting to be in an outfit that requires assistance to get in and out of.

It sounds like he's not really up for fancy dress, has tried to get on board but doesn't want to. Can you not Amazon prime a costume last minute that doesn't involve a zipped in suit?

Loopytiles · 09/09/2019 16:50

Disposable, plastic fashion: shit for the environment.

He’s not U not to wear it, if he returns it.

Hannah021 · 09/09/2019 16:51

LOL your post made me laugh, what a lovely family. I hope he figures it out.
If I were you, I'd order another spiderman costume for him and give that a try, you might be lucky with the zip.

or maybe he can wear it under his clothing and go ready steady!

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 09/09/2019 16:54

Buy him a pair of black glasses, a teeshirt with a superman logo on it and get him to go as Clark Kent. Or take it to seamstress and ask them to put a discreet zip in the fold at the top of the leg.

Diagonalli · 09/09/2019 16:54

DH met a Batman at comic con one year who he said was getting extremely frustrated with his batman belt, extra pants & suit zipper - said the hopping about meant it was getting extremely urgent Grin

Sorry I can’t help but imagine a dejected Spider Man with a potbelly 🤣
