...to paint the dadoo rail the same colour as the walls?

newish house ( less than 30 years old) has dadoo rail half way up the walls - front door opens in to hall way, up the stairs to upstairs hallway/landing. When we moved in we repainted in haste (young children, lack of time) and I painted over the dadoo rail in the same colour as the walls (think pale, magnolia type colour), now needs re doing, I have more time, and could paint the walls one colour and the dadoo rail in white. Also, is Farrow and Ball paint worth it??

Can you post any photos?
Hard to say without them tbh

Hauskat · 07/09/2019 19:30

I think you can paint the dado rail the same colour if you want to. I have. I hate mine. I haven’t used Farrow and Ball much but spent £££ on the Little Greene Paint company over the years. In hind sight I am not sure it’s worth it. Leyland will colour match light colours of most paint. The only posh paint I have tried that seemed genuinely worth it was Sanderson.

F&B No. rubs of too easy, can not touch up easy, usually have to paint the whole wall again, its very expensive for what it is, I have to hand it to marketing, they have tricked the rich to think its the go to paint

alifemoreorlessordinary · 07/09/2019 19:32

was dreading the "photos" thing, my phone just doesn't want to connect... just asking about the colour/ contrast difference, between a (shiny/gloss?) white dado rail half way up the wall, and a matt colour. all over the walls from top to bottom encompassing the rail itself (i'd like to hack it off but feel this would be too much work) Smile

I paint mine white but they’re apple green in our bedroom because the people before us did it 🙄 I can Sanderson paint. Worth the cash in my opinion.

ooh interesting about the rubs off easily thing... was hoping to do a "One coat" job Wink

Get Valspar to colour match the F&B shade you like.

I'm not a fan of dado rails so I'd paint it the same colour so it blends in.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/09/2019 19:36

Or at least the same colour as the b9ttom part

Mine is painted white against a white wall a gloss white against Matt walls

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 07/09/2019 19:38

Yes painted the same colour gives it a modern twist.

ooh interesting, was wondering what was fashionable/modern now Grin may think about it being the same colour as the bottom half of the wall (wasn't that "in" in the 80's/90's? Confused or was that the stick on borders . Thanks all for replying

Loads of ads for furniture etc show dado painted same colour as walls (and skirting boards too) - it's totally on - trend at the moment

SparklyShoesandTutus · 07/09/2019 20:32

Our dado railbus the same as top colour of the walls. Also we were not a fan of farrow and ball but if you are happy with that price range check out little greene. Their hard wearing paint is great for wiping down, they have some great colours and it goes in the walls really well

SparklyShoesandTutus · 07/09/2019 20:33

Please excuse the typos Blush

cheeseislife8 · 07/09/2019 20:35

Ours is the same colour as the wall underneath, but it wasn't us, it was like that when we moved in. I've been wondering to do with it when we paint!

Babdoc · 07/09/2019 20:36

My DSis used to have a neighbour who called them (in all seriousness) dildo rails.
DSis used to suffer agonies of suppressed hysterics until she could get safely home to shriek!

Fettfrett · 07/09/2019 20:43

F&B is not a hard wearing paint so definitely don't use it on a high traffic area like hall and stairs. It's a very Matt, chalky finish so marks really easily. Your best bet for hard wearing paint is to go to a proper decorator centre and buy a trade paint (dulux, crown, Johnston's, Albany all have a trade version).

StayInYourLaneBoy · 07/09/2019 21:02

I miss my dado rail, I wouldn't mind one again... (misses point...)

I'm painting mine the same colour as I hate them but they are glued on and will cost money to remove. I figure they'll blend in more if they are painted

PooWillyBumBum · 07/09/2019 21:08

I love my F&B paint. Doesn’t rub off easily at all, easy to wipe (got modern emulsion) and looks fab. I did have a decorator in to do it but when touching up (when we filled a couple of holes from removing paintings) it didn’t strike me as particularly tricky to get coverage - and I was covering white filler with Stiffkey Blue!

PooWillyBumBum · 07/09/2019 21:09

PS dado rail up to you. We have the original wooden panelling in our dining room the same colour as the dark blue walls and ceiling(!) but for other rooms I like the picture rail contrast. Think it depends on what look you’re going for.

StylishDuck · 07/09/2019 21:12

Missing the point of this post but this reminded me of the time my mum announced that she wanted to get rid the "dildo rail" in her front room GrinGrinGrin

Sorry...as you were...

gavisconismyfriend · 07/09/2019 21:39

I use Vintro paint - vintage colours, made in uk, very quick delivery and the decorator said he used much less of it than regular paint as it has great coverage. I’d do dado in a contrast colour, probably same colour as other paintwork

MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2019 21:44

I questioned this and did a little test. The rail is white and the wall dimpse

I’m glad I didn’t do it the same colour

I really like F&B but did use modern emulsion for stairwell
