To feel very poor after recent thread

Clappingforjoy · 06/09/2019 21:48

Recent thread on here where posters where revealing their income got me really fed up that I must be one of the lowest earners around and it made me feel like failure failure.
Is everybody well off on mumsnet or something where are these people that have to use food banks because all I ever see is people with brand new cars, going on holidays nice houses etc etc i find it mind boggling.

clapping honestly it isn't. It just seems that way because as stated, people on here like to boast about how much they have.

And then there's me. I work 45 hours a week for 19000 a year. I have 3 kids to raise. It's not a lot. We get by.

Weezol · 06/09/2019 22:00

No ones going to go on those threads and say ‘I work 40 hours a week for 22k’.

That's a damn good wage around my area.

DeeCeeCherry · 06/09/2019 22:01

OP I am far, far from rich.

Drogosnextwife · 06/09/2019 22:01

We are low earners, live in a 2 bed 4 in a block, and yes I feel like shit about it most of the time. I just want to give my kids more but its unlikely we will ever move up in the world.
Our town used to be relitivley normal. Lots of average earners and the small areas of big houses. Now there are more and more big fancy housing estates being built, and high earners moving in because its a good commuter town.

Clappingforjoy · 06/09/2019 22:02

I guess there are people like me then

micellargin · 06/09/2019 22:03

Mumsnet's demographic is quite a bit more middle class and privately educated than the general population, I think. There was a pocket money for teens thread a while ago and the amount some of them gave their kids per months was 4 times as much as me and the people I know with teens give our DC!

I do love MN but it has made me feel skint in the past!

Clappingforjoy · 06/09/2019 22:03

Ironic thing is that I cant get any benefit because I'm just over the threshold

DeeCeeCherry · 06/09/2019 22:03

An Income Reveal post & thread sounds so naff. I don't think truly rich people would take part in that.

Pandamodium · 06/09/2019 22:04

Don't worry your not alone after my disabled child has been healed as if yet by magic but with all the same symptoms needing just as much care by our DLA system we are totally screwed.

My DH has had to go to back to work in the middle of a psychotic episode (DH has technically a lifetime sick note with schizophrenia being incurable) on a fucking roof of all places, just so we can actually eat. He should by rights be in hospital.

There's strong links between poverty and MH issues/other disabilities.

It's shit but you just have to crack on there isn't much of an alternative.

Crustytoenail · 06/09/2019 22:05

There's a thread at the moment about a working couple needing to use a food bank.
I didn't see the thread, but I wouldn't be ashamed to post on it. 40 hours £18,000 a year. Hospitality.
And that's more than min wage and more than most in the same position. But without people like me and my colleagues, no one would have pubs, restaurants and hotels. Care and retail staff are on similar rates, without them no elderly care or childcare or shops. Society is built on low income jobs and it's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, despite what some people will say. They're all quite happy to avail themselves of the services provided.

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2019 22:05

I don't know which thread you're referring to, but the recent one I saw the vast majority of posters were low to mid earners, many between 20-30 k a year. Can you post a link to it?

HimHerWhatever · 06/09/2019 22:07

I was asked recently what my 5 year goal is and where do I want to be. I haven't got a fucking clue, if I'm doing the same as what I'm doing now that's great as long as I'm safe and happy. Not everybody wants to take over the world x

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2019 22:07

No ones going to go on those threads and say ‘I work 40 hours a week for 22k’.

On the thread I saw many many people did.

colourlessgreenidea · 06/09/2019 22:07

Is everybody well off on mumsnet or something

MN is riddled with trolls, and there are several well-known fantasists on here.

Take nothing on here at face value, especially where money, weight and domestic hygiene are concerned.

Waterandlemonjuice · 06/09/2019 22:08

Link to thread please?

Clappingforjoy · 06/09/2019 22:08

£20k would be luxurious for me

In real life I’ve often found the biggest braggers about money are also the biggest fibbers. The genuinely wealthy and high earners tend not to talk figures. I suspect this trend is somewhat amplified on here.

FFSDH · 06/09/2019 22:09

Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply 22k was a crap salary by any means Blush. Just that it’s a perfectly average wage and people don’t feel the need to either brag about it or try and make other people open their eyes a bit by saying how little they earn. The middle of the road, not very interesting wages never seem to be included in these threads.

huggybear · 06/09/2019 22:09

93% of school kids are not privately schooled but you wouldn't think that reading Mumsnet.

Clappingforjoy · 06/09/2019 22:09

I've never done a link not sure how its done

My income is £3900 per year. A tiny wage & a rent free flat from the church I work for topped up to £75 per week with Working Tax Credits. I'd say that makes me poor lol.
I live alone so I've only me to worry about. I do ok. I've a £400 overdraft facility which gets used a lot but overall I manage well. I'm a black belt bargain shopper so day to day life isn't all doom & gloom. I'd be happy to have more though.

Justaboy · 06/09/2019 22:13

One example here.

Mate of mine and his wife both low earners local authority workers always on the scrounge of sorts.

Wife befriendfed old lady locally, used to run small errands for her was VERY surprised to find after she died a letter from a soliciors the old lady had no desecandnts and left the house and esate to the mates wife sudddenly thay were £570,000 better off :!

Changed their lifestyle a bit but they still kept their jobs as they liked doing them etc!

Lifecraft · 06/09/2019 22:13

and there are several well-known fantasists on here.

That's exactly what I was telling the other supermodels at the Milan Fashion Week.

bingowingsmcgee · 06/09/2019 22:15

Yeah big high fives to the carers, TAs, hospital orderleys, cleaners, dinner ladies, SAHMs, nursery nurses and many many others who do essential jobs and are poorly paid. People's worth in human terms is never reflected in the money they earn.

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2019 22:15

Op, you just copy the page address from the tool bar at the top of your page. So it will say https/ something, and then paste it here.
