To wonder why people don't understand how motorways work?!

ComftyCushion · 06/09/2019 20:48

I travel on the motorway every day. The number of people who don't know how to drive on motorways astounds me.

My main gripes are;

  1. Lane hoggers. People in middle or outside lane driving at the same speed as the cars in the left lane. If you're not actively overtaking, or if there is space in the lane to your left... move the fuck over. On a 4 lane motorway there have been several times in the past week where I've had to move over 3 lanes and back to overtake some pillock bimbling along in the middle lane.
  1. Slamming on brakes at average speed cameras. It's damn right dangerous. You won't get a ticket for going through the camera if you're going over 70. The cameras are paired up randomly, the speeding ticket is done based on how long it takes you to travel between the two cameras. They may not even be consecutive cameras that are paired. Suddenly slamming on brakes on a fast motorway is ridiculous and dangerous.

That's my rant. Is it unreasonable to expect people to understand motorways before they drive on them?!

Yanbu. But missed

  1. people with no idea what slip roads are for. Either when entering the mway, or when they’re already on the mway and other vehicles are trying to use it to enter correctly.

  2. people with no concept of a blind spot.

  3. drivers that feel it necessary to get in lane 3 miles before their exit, so they block mway merges and/or busy entry slip roads.

  4. people overtaking when they are only going slightly faster so it takes a huge distance. But instead of waiting for a gap big enough, they pull out and delay everyone else.

  5. people that think if they drive up your arse and flash when you’re in a line of heavy, but flowing traffic, the solid row of cars in front of you will magically disappear.

YesQueen · 06/09/2019 21:57

I'm adding

People who drive up slip roads SO slowly at like 40mph when the motorway is clear to join

People who deliberately block others joining the motorway AngryAngry I move over to the middle lane to leave it clear for people joining. But I had someone deliberately block me and stopping at the end of a slip road is not fun!

Oh and people who you go to move past who then speed up. Wankers

Ginfordinner · 06/09/2019 22:00

YANBU.
I drive on the M1 to get to and from work. All the above gripes happen to me regularly.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 06/09/2019 22:10

YANBU - agree with all of the above. Very annoying!

DareDevil223 · 06/09/2019 22:11

I commute on the motorway everyday so yes to all the above plus:
Lorries overtaking other lorries very very slowly so so that they block two lanes for miles.
(Nearly always) male drivers who are emasculated by me overtaking them and have to get past me again at all costs.
Wankers the lot of them,

PinkLacy · 06/09/2019 22:13

Hear hear to all the above!

PinkLacy · 06/09/2019 22:13
  1. indicating is a request not a command!
minionsrule · 06/09/2019 22:16

People who actively speed up when you are overtaking them, once you are past they drop back down to their previous speed. Seems to happen to me a lot, and the culprits are always male, their pride myst be dented Hmm.
Similar are people who stay in middle lane and just match the speed of the person in front, if that person moves over they then put their foot down rather than overtaking in the first place...... so it leaves me (overtaking both) then having to decide if i want to race them or just pull behind them.

Nancyjuice7 · 06/09/2019 22:16

Have to add when their are two lanes of slip road, one joining a lot sooner than the other. If you take a while to speed up or want longer to join on - go in the longer lane!! Stop using the short slip road at 45mph

Nancyjuice7 · 06/09/2019 22:17

Lifecraft · 06/09/2019 22:19

Suddenly slamming on brakes on a fast motorway is ridiculous and dangerous.

Driving too close to the car in front, so that if the suddenly slam on their brakes, you crash into them, that's even more dangerous.

SerenDippitty · 06/09/2019 22:20

People who come bearing down on you at 85 mph as soon as you have moved into the outside lane to overtake.

FairyDust92 · 06/09/2019 22:20

Literally the other day going on the slip road and the lanes merged person in left lane was going about 20 then all of a sudden sped up and cut us up when we beeped the horn the mother fucker slammed his breaks on, started to go and done it again making the whole slip road come to a stop. I have an 8 week old baby in the car with us. If it wasn't for my partner slamming on his breaks we would've gone into the back of him for sure. Then we all had the pleasure of trying to get on the motorway after this twat made everything come to a stop. He's a wanker.

Also seen wayyyyy to many times people just cutting into lanes when another person is also doing it from another lane!

Also people who ignore the warning signs to reduce speed or lane closed.

That was longer than I thought

damncats · 06/09/2019 22:20

Yes the use of slip roads is terrible. If you’re on the motorway you don’t need to slow down to 40 as you see the 300 yard sign. The slip road is for slowing down.

Similarly, the whole length of the slip road is there to use when joining the motorway - you don’t have to dive on as soon as you get past the hatching.

Aaaand it’s the drivers on the slip who have to give way to cars already on the motorway - not the other way round. The amount of people I see who are already doing 55 in the inside lane who dive on the breaks if there’s a car coming down the slip is ridiculous.

DoctorAllcome · 06/09/2019 22:23

You can pass in the slow lane? That’s illegal in my state. Is it really allowed in the U.K.?

Onlythelonelywelcome · 06/09/2019 22:25

@minionsrule
I recently tried to overtake someone on a stretch of road, they were doing just 25 in a 50 in a clear straight road. I pulled out to overtake at which point they put the boot down giving me the finger etc.
I pulled in behind him at which point he started slamming on the brakes.

SushiGo · 06/09/2019 22:25

People who undertake instead of waiting ten seconds when a situation changes and someone needs to pull in to the left from the middle or right hand lane. (ie looks like they are lane hogging but in fact is just about to move out the way)

Eg, lorry in left lane and car slowly overtaking in middle lane, second car going faster overtaking both in right lane.

Car in middle lane passes lorry and pulls back into left lane meaning car in right can also move over - just as car in right has checked mirrors etc and is about to pull to the middle impatient undertaking shit head speeds through the middle lane.

Just wait 10 seconds! It's not hard!

ComftyCushion · 06/09/2019 22:26

@DoctorAllcome pass in the slow lane? What like under taking? No that's not allowed. And is another thing to add to my list of pet hates! Undertaking!
I don't do it as it's very dangerous but occasionally can empathise when I see people who do due to the morons sitting in the overtaking lanes who aren't actually overtaking anything!

OP posts:
TrainspottingWelsh · 06/09/2019 22:28

People driving around or below the speed limit that slam on their brakes because there’s a police car. So you start anticipating a hazard ahead only to catch up and find it’s a load of muppets seemingly unaware that it’s ok to go past at 70mph.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 06/09/2019 22:29

Oh and people who you go to move past who then speed up. Wankers

This. Then they always slow back down again once you move back in behind them. Infuriating!

RainbowJumpers · 06/09/2019 22:30

I was driving down a quiet stretch of motorway and saw a woman driving about 60mph (maybe less) down the outside lane, no other cars around. It baffled me.

I hate people who pull out to over take, then don’t.

Lorries who block the second lane on a duel carriage way to over take, just so they can go 2mph faster than the lorry they’re overtaking.

chomalungma · 06/09/2019 22:30

Lorries.

Doing their 3 abreast convoys occasionally.

Or coming up right behind you.

Plus lane hoggers, people coming up really quickly and last second lane changers.

Ihatesundays · 06/09/2019 22:32

People in big powerful cars who don’t understand your 1 litre car takes a little while to come up to speed.

People who don’t understand that if you are in the outside lane, you can’t smash into a car in the inside lane just because they want you out of the way.

blueshoes · 06/09/2019 22:34

People who rubberneck and cause traffic jams on both sides of the road. Everybody must do this. Even when there isn't really anything to see.

BizzzzyBee · 06/09/2019 22:36

If you're not actively overtaking, or if there is space in the lane to your left... move the fuck over
I often remain in the right lane if there are slip roads coming up. People join from the slip road and instead of slowing down and giving way they just barge straight in front of you, forcing you to slow down.
