To wonder why people don't understand how motorways work?!

I travel on the motorway every day. The number of people who don't know how to drive on motorways astounds me.

My main gripes are;

  1. Lane hoggers. People in middle or outside lane driving at the same speed as the cars in the left lane. If you're not actively overtaking, or if there is space in the lane to your left... move the fuck over. On a 4 lane motorway there have been several times in the past week where I've had to move over 3 lanes and back to overtake some pillock bimbling along in the middle lane.
  1. Slamming on brakes at average speed cameras. It's damn right dangerous. You won't get a ticket for going through the camera if you're going over 70. The cameras are paired up randomly, the speeding ticket is done based on how long it takes you to travel between the two cameras. They may not even be consecutive cameras that are paired. Suddenly slamming on brakes on a fast motorway is ridiculous and dangerous.

That's my rant. Is it unreasonable to expect people to understand motorways before they drive on them?!

boggles unless the motorway is nose to tail slow traffic and the entire slip road is in first gear I’m not surprised people get pissed off if you stop at the end of slip roads to wait for an opening. You don’t need to bomb down but you are meant to drive at a suitable speed to match the traffic, pick a gap to pull into and time it so you reach it.

Not to mention that even if your car is incredibly fast, everyone in less powerful vehicles is going to be unable to reach a suitable speed from a stand still.

I drive a lot, and been on most, of not all uk mways, and barring stop start queuing traffic I’ve never once had to stop at the end of any slip road to wait for a gap. Unless of course the person in front of me has decided to drive it like a t-junction.

So most of these are driver errors but it REALLY gets my goat when you get miles upon miles of 50mph speed limit (with cameras) and 6 million cones AND NOTHING AT ALL HAPPENING!! so on a clear dry day everybody has to tootle along at 50 because sometime next month there might be a workman on the road, somewhere within a 25 mile radius.

@minionsrule Agree with people speeding up when you try to overtake them. Whenever I overtake it's because they are well under the speed limit, not because I have a personal vendetta against them, or because I'd like a race. I just want to get to where I need to be!

Although to be fair, sometimes I don't realise I'm under the limit until someone does overtake, but I let them do it, and THEN speed up.

When you're doing a steady speed (often using cruise control) and someone overtakes you, but then slows down again - until you move out to overtake them. I just want to travel at a consistent speed, conditions permitting - if you don't mind the slower speed, HGVs are generally much better in this regard.

Or bikers who insist on travelling in a group, but slower than you want to - so every time you get past a few of them, they speed up to overtake you again - then slow down in front of you. Once took me ten miles of the A1 to get past a group of men with issues on their fart toys.
