To be annoyed that in-laws won't spell dd name correctly.

Okay, my DD name is Sarah. It's on her birth certificate " Sarah
But my mother in law and sister in laws refuse to type it like this and put it like "saara" Always. When I asked why, they said "this is the correct way, it's the Arabic way, you spelt it like the English and we won't use that".

Am I being unreasonable to be so annoyed and I don't even know what to do? Because I can't force them.. I guess I just have to wait for my actual Sarah to correct them one day. I'm hoping for a "Granny why do you spell my name wrong" situation one day. ConfusedGrin

Are the calling the Zara? I know a few of them from the ME.

Anyway - they are being cheeky. So what if they from the ME? Tough, the name is Sarah. It’s a nice name and if they can’t manage to pronounce it or spell it, they are just being wilfully stupid.

averythinline · 06/09/2019 18:15

They are being delibertely crap as you know - so I would ignore except always spelling SIL kids wrong....

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 06/09/2019 18:20

They don't have the skills to pronounce or write or learn how to do it the correct way.

Which is fine in your situation but that's not what's happening in the OP's case. If her MIL and SILs can write Saara they there is nothing at all other than their own stubbornness to prevent them spelling it correctly as Sarah.

SaraNade · 06/09/2019 18:32

Where I am, Sarah is pronounced Saira, and Sara is pronounced Saira. In other words, exactly the same. I honestly have never heard Sara pronounced as Zara before. As I said, like Taylor/Taylah or Rebecca/Rebecka. Or even Megan/Meghan.
"Sarah spelled with the “h” is the way Sarah is spelled in the Bible. It is another older way of spelling of the name. The h is silent so some people started to spell it without the “h” "

My MIL does this my DD who is now in her teens and I have yet seen her get it right.
Her name is Freya she spells is Fraya now I understand that it does sound like that but come on she's always stealth boasting about how much she knows about history and other subjects yet a name that has been around since the Vikings and she can't spell it!

We should have really messed with her mind and spelt it Freja/ Freyja Wink

Arghh should have proof read my post.

imamearcat · 07/09/2019 09:12

My name is also Sarah and my Mil puts Sara every time.

Of all the things she does that piss me off it's at the lower end of the scale. But yeah, it's annoying. Every time I read it, it feels a bit disrespectful.

My dc are mixed race. We gave them a name from each language/ culture.
The two sides of the family use the name of their choice.
It has never been a problem, the dc like having 2 names, they are bilingual, understand both cultures, everyone is fine with it. I wouldn't turn it into a big issue tbh.

My own parents don't spell my name correctly. 😂. They spelt it the normal traditional way on my birth certificate but mixed up two vowels ever since. It has a different pronunciation if you say it the way they spell it so I reverted to the correct way when I was a teen.

Think Heather and Haether type of thing with them spelling it Haether. I think they are probably both dyslexic.

TBH - a few documents have ended up with the incorrect spelling but it's never caused any issues at all and I've never minded or been offended.

FireBloodAndIce · 07/09/2019 13:39

Sara is rhyming with sara here. Sarah is rhyming with wearer too. I think in the US (from what I've seen on tv) sara is pronounced sarah (CSI fe), but never seen it that way in the UK.

mathanxiety · 07/09/2019 23:21

Both Sara and Sarah are pronounced exactly the same in my accent (Irish) and I have never come across an American Sara or Sarah who you could tell apart just from hearing their names. Middle syllable rhymes with hair.
