Lighthearted really, although I can't stop worrying about the amount of things my 1 year old is afraid of!

The biggest day to day worry for him is ceiling lights! This started a couple of months ago and hasn't gone away yet. We show him how they switch on and off and he seems to even enjoy this sometimes but at other times he can be happily playing and then look up at the light fitting (on or off) and get really upset. When I am carrying him and he is higher up so closer to the lights he clings on to me for dear life. He has started shows signs of being afraid of light fittings when out and about too.
He is also afraid of noises when he can't detect where they are coming from (for example, the sound of the ice cream van outside or when I talk to Alexa and it talks back- I've stopped doing this).
What unfathomable things are your babies afraid of? For those who have been through it, please tell me this will pass. I can't make light fittings go away unfortunately!

My mum had really long hair when I was a baby/toddler, and she said I went through a stage where I would cry my eyes out if she put her hair up in a pony tail.

WorriedFTM1 · 05/09/2019 18:29

That's a interesting one. I still have to wear my hair tied back all the time otherwise he pulls it, so he doesn't have that fear at least Smile

Beards on men other then Daddy. Very hard to navigate with today's fashions.

Stickybeaksid · 05/09/2019 18:32

Sellotape. My first was terrified of it. I think it was the noise when you rip a bit off. Also all men with beards including my dad.

EssentialHummus · 05/09/2019 18:36

A particular Russian toy/cartoon character called Cheburashka. No idea what started it.

DappledThings · 05/09/2019 18:36

Curry.

3 year old loves it and I can hide loads of veg in the sauce. 20 month old, who usually hoovers up everything in sight screams at the sight of it and tries to climb out of her chair.

Of course she wolfs it down at nursery.

DappledThings · 05/09/2019 18:37

And ladybirds.

LetsBreakItDown · 05/09/2019 18:37

Someone unexpectedly shouting. My niece sings a song and shouts the last word, makes my DD hysterical. Same as with a baby show on tv. There's a little butterfly that starts to sing and gets really loud towards the end, out comes the pouty lip and lots of tears!

Templetonstunafish · 05/09/2019 18:51

Parcel tape. At first just the sound of it. Now also the sight. Really putting me off my ebaying!

itbemay1 · 05/09/2019 18:51

When DD was around 1 she used to hate me wearing leather gloves

Spanglyprincess1 · 05/09/2019 18:52

Men who he doesn't know well.

WonderTweek · 05/09/2019 18:54

Haha. Mine was terrified of bubbles and AstroTurf when he was little. He's now two and loves bubbles and tolerates AstroTurf but is currently petrified of clear tape. Grin

katmarie · 05/09/2019 18:57

The sound of the dog coming through the dog flap terrifies my 19 month old. Doesn't matter what hes doing, if one of the dogs comes through the flap hes on my lap and crying faster than you can say woof!

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 05/09/2019 18:58

DD was afraid of beards and motorbikes (so my bearded, biker brother was not a favourite uncle!!)

DS was petrified of Granny Murray from the children's TV programme Me Too . I'm not sure if the programme is still on but Granny Murray was supposed to be this lovely childminder character , only she really put the shits up DS and he would hide and cry. Poor casting by the BBC there!

crustycrab · 05/09/2019 18:59

I came on to say sellotape! Looks like that's a common one

JorahsMistress · 05/09/2019 19:00

When my ds (now 19) was about 1-2yrs old he used to cry and run away every time Phil Mitchell came on the telly 😂

SFCA · 05/09/2019 19:01

Shakers, cereal, sweetcorn, peas, dried pasta and rice, shape sorter, small animals..... lots of things!

goodforbrian · 05/09/2019 19:01

My 16 month old boy is terrified of the noise the toilet makes when flushing Smile Minimal flushing in this household lol

SFCA · 05/09/2019 19:03

Mean I know but I was curious, he is also scared of sellotape

Dontlickthetrolley · 05/09/2019 19:04

Someone crossing their fingers, although he is now 8 and hasn't grown out of it but he is a drama llama and my 7 year old loves to do it just to wind him up.

RickJames · 05/09/2019 19:04

Both my DS and cousin's DD were terrified of Spooky Spoon 😂 that stupid spoon thing from numberjacks.

When he was really small he had a recurring nightmare about being chased by a large bouncing ball that made him fall in a deep dark hole. He'd race into our bedroom screaming bouncy ball hurt (his name) (his name) sad!

He's always been very stoical apart from that.

NCBabyBoy · 05/09/2019 19:07

So far only loud noises - hand dryers = howling, as was a breaking champagne flute.

AlaskanBush · 05/09/2019 19:07

The hoover - I have to wait until she's fast asleep to even think about getting it out. She's even scared when I open the cupboard where it lives!

She's also scared of the boomerang on a Peppa Pig episode when they're in Australia Grin.

JustLikeJasper · 05/09/2019 19:08

1 year old terrified of the hair dryer, hoover and hand blender 🤷🏻‍♀️

WorriedFTM1 · 05/09/2019 19:14

Hmmm, tape does seem to be a common one! I haven't tested that one out yet so think it might be best to steer clear.
For the record, he is also afraid of the hoover, hand dryers, the hair dryer etc and those tambourines that have little plastic balls in them. He can't even look at the box that is in. Think I need to re-gift!
