Lighthearted really, although I can't stop worrying about the amount of things my 1 year old is afraid of!

The biggest day to day worry for him is ceiling lights! This started a couple of months ago and hasn't gone away yet. We show him how they switch on and off and he seems to even enjoy this sometimes but at other times he can be happily playing and then look up at the light fitting (on or off) and get really upset. When I am carrying him and he is higher up so closer to the lights he clings on to me for dear life. He has started shows signs of being afraid of light fittings when out and about too.
He is also afraid of noises when he can't detect where they are coming from (for example, the sound of the ice cream van outside or when I talk to Alexa and it talks back- I've stopped doing this).
What unfathomable things are your babies afraid of? For those who have been through it, please tell me this will pass. I can't make light fittings go away unfortunately!

Ds was afraid of cereal and crisps, like terrified! He would scream and leave the room. He eats cereal now but still won’t go near crisps and won’t be in the same room as anyone eating them, he’s almost 10. He’s waiting to be assessed for autism though, he has lots of food sensory issues.

Dd always afraid of handriers and also lights but she is autistic and again it’s sensory issues, turned out it was that she could hear bulbs buzzing at a frequency we couldn’t and it causes meltdowns. That’s why she was always climbing to turn off the lights Sad lots of food fears too, too many to list!

Wibblewobble99 · 05/09/2019 19:17

Anything loud. Especially if she can’t discern where the noise is coming from. She starts crying as soon as she sees the mixer or blender and says ‘no noise!!’ (She’s 2). Doesn’t like lawnmowers, HATEs hand dryers. A little frustrating at times!

WhyBirdStop · 05/09/2019 19:19

The hoover but only when it's facing him (it's a Henry). Spin it round and he's fine.

sleepinginthecar · 05/09/2019 19:19

She's 2 in February. She used to be petrified of the hoover. And shoes. She point blank wouldn't let you go near her with a pair of shoes (hers)

She's now petrified of the hand dryers in public toilets 😫

xTinkerhellx · 05/09/2019 19:19

Mine was terrified of anything that covered her feet when she was a baby.

Slippers/socks/blanket over her feet would result in howling until she could see her toes again.

Rainbowknickers · 05/09/2019 19:21

My daughter was shit scared of the spoon from numberjacks
One son was scared of doctor who
Another son hated lifts, stairs, hand dryers his sock seams and his bedroom door when it was shut
Another daughter went through a phase of being scared of her teeth (yeah I didn’t get that either!)

Spoonsmum · 05/09/2019 19:24

My now 16 yr old dd used to be afraid of rugs when she was a baby. If she was crawling she refused to crawl over the rug (even if it was on a carpet) and if she couldn’t go round it she’d cry until someone picked her up and carried her to the other side.

Inkythemouse · 05/09/2019 19:26

Ds2 was terrified of the fluff from the tumble dryer when he was about a year old

PrincessSarene · 05/09/2019 19:29

Beards, hand dryers, bubbles, as already mentioned. But my favourite was when my DD was scared of her own shadow - if she spotted it when we were outside she would try and run away from it and get really cross/upset that she couldn’t. I used to nearly wet myself laughing (nice supportive parenting there!) Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 05/09/2019 19:32

My niece as a 1yr old would get distraught at not being able to see her toes either. Don't know why that is. Even if you put a blanket on her you had to pull it up a bit so she could check she still had all her toes in place.

Lunafortheloveogod · 05/09/2019 19:34

So far at 5months DS will sound like he’s being murdered if he see’s Winnie the Pooh or hears trolls.. lets hope he hates Peppa too Grin. Ironically mil bought him the same vintage edition pooh bear as her sons had and other dgc.. they loved them.. ds disagrees lol

SaddleGoose · 05/09/2019 19:34

Toilet rolls. He clocked onto it while in the bath and wouldn't stop looking so we thought he liked it. Got him out and showed him, his bottom lip went and he cried and cried. Broke my heart but I also had to laugh🤣we keep showing them to him and he's getting better..😏

AlphaJura · 05/09/2019 19:35

My youngest (she's only 16mths) was afraid of the Thomas the tank engine tv programme! The first time she saw it she started crying. I thought maybe it wasn't the tv programme but then when she saw it again, she cried again. I don't think she like their big faces talking!

Runoutofgas · 05/09/2019 19:35

The hoover and hand dryers in public toilets

Bunnybaubles · 05/09/2019 19:35

My 1yo is afraid of grass. She refuses to put her feet down when you try lowering her onto it. One day my DM sat her on the grass and she freaked out.

Shes also afraid of hand dryers in public toilets, which is strange considering she LOVES the hoover and hairdryer and gets really excited when I switch them on.

JustMe81 · 05/09/2019 19:37

Any episode of Paw Patrol that has snow in it. He’s fine with it in real life and other programmes but hates it on Paw Patrol. Hmm

vampirethriller · 05/09/2019 19:41

The woman speaking Japanese on the Yakult TV ads.

TheSheepofWallSt · 05/09/2019 19:43

My son is 3. He’s variously been scared of

Pomegranates
The prospect that bears may come into the garden
His shadow being “swallowed up” by bigger shadows
Airplanes “in case we fall out” (he’s never been on one).

Confrontayshunme · 05/09/2019 19:44

My 3yo is terrified of the sound of ours/the neighbours bins being dragged back and forth from the road. Tuesday mornings are ROUGH for her.Grin

yulet · 05/09/2019 19:46

These are all so cute.

VladmirsPoutine · 05/09/2019 19:48

Come to think of it my niece is also terrified of washing machines. I think she fears she might get stuck inside it and go "round and round". Can't see that ever happening but it is her mortal fear.

LetsBreakItDown · 05/09/2019 19:48

Remembered another one! My DD hates it when people say "ssh". Not the nice quiet baby shushing, but the "ssh" adults make to tell people to be quiet! Ive has many a time I've sshed her because she was making a racket, and she's freaked out, this making it worse 😂

Honeybingbong · 05/09/2019 19:49

My 1 year old is scared of the flowers on the dining table. Not the ones in the windows or the living room. They are all shades of white so wtf his issue with the ones on the dining table are I’ll never know Hmm

HippyChickMama · 05/09/2019 19:50

Ds was scared of snow, it was too big apparently 🤷🏻‍♀️ and last year I had my hair cut and got a fringe, dd who was actually 5 at the time so not really a toddler, cried her eyes out when I picked her up from school and begged me to "cut it off"!
