I really want to start taking photos again with them ... but can you even get them developed anymore?

@MyLucifrr

YABU. They are awful End up in landfill and the pics are shit.

And AFAIK, the 'disposable camera trend' was about 7 years ago! (And lasted for only a season thankfully...)

sleepylittlebunnies · 04/09/2019 22:53

DS11 had to take a disposable camera for a residential school trip. I presumed due to risk of losing expensive cameras/phones but could have been for safeguarding. Anyway, he took some pics, he can’t remember what of and really isn’t fussed about them. I’m loathed to pay for developing the film to discover a bunch of blurred pics of a mountain. It’s still in his room.

Mastic issues aside, how would the ‘trend’ have become a ‘trend’ if you couldn’t get the photos developed anywhere? Are hipsters taking trendy photos on disposable cameras then throwing them away without getting them developed? Confused

Yes yes. Everyone is suddenly all about the environment.

I KNOW!! All those tedious buzz-kill fuckers harshing on your trendy disposable fun when they’re not even vegans!!! Angry

colourlessgreenidea · 04/09/2019 23:02

‘Mastic’? PLASTIC!

QueenOfPain · 04/09/2019 23:03

Get the HUJI app, makes your photos look as a shit as if they’d been taken on a disposable and you can even add a 90’s date at the bottom.

CountFosco · 04/09/2019 23:07

Not polaroid (not made any more), Instax. Or you could make a pinhole camera and stick in a roll of film in. Would be more fun than a disposable camera.

TartanCurtains1 · 04/09/2019 23:09

YABU. Waste of time and money. And yes, plastic.

As pp said - i thought it was Polaroid was the "trendy" thing (though even that was a couple of years ago). I can't fathom a trend for crap photos!

tangled2 · 04/09/2019 23:09

I'm only vegetarian so my opinion counts for nothing, but any 'trend' for a disposable anything is just stupid and selfish. Single use items, especially unimportant ones, need to be phased out. Also what is the bloody point? Just take a phone pic and get it printed out.

Chocmallows · 04/09/2019 23:13

Phone pic, but just one image of anything of interest at a wonky angle with people blinking against sun. If it's not bad enough add a slight sepia tone. Same result and you can definitely get them printed.

whatswithtodaytoday · 04/09/2019 23:13

I grew up using disposable cameras. 80% of your photos will be shit.

whatswithtodaytoday · 04/09/2019 23:14

Also, a lot of the 'disposable camera' photos you see on Instagram will have been filtered to make them look good before posting online. What is the point of that?

WindsweptEgret · 04/09/2019 23:18

YABVU to love anything that involves throwaway single use plastic when there is an alternative. I don't understand what is wrong with anyone who could think that was okay Confused.

ranibowsprimkle · 04/09/2019 23:36

Are you sure you're not getting them mixed up with Polaroid's? I've not seen anyone using a disposable camera in at least a decade.

In any case an instant camera will give a similar a athetise and without the hassle of trying to find somewhere to get them developed.

@CountFosco Polaroid do still make instant cameras but they're a little more expensive than instax

Many moons ago it was trendy to give wedding guests a disposable camera and set them loose at the reception. I'm not sure whether the resulting film was worth developing or not. I think this was in the late 80s and the 90s. Fun though.

HoomanMoomin · 05/09/2019 00:03

Get the app on your phone and enjoy your disposable camera without disposing.

We did that at our wedding Blush

Really really really really not.

A long day of alcohol consumption is not conducive to thought-provoking, beautifully composed photography.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/09/2019 00:14

There’s an app which works like a disposable camera. You are limited in the number of photos, and you need to wait 24 hours for them to “develop” so you can see them. I can’t remember the name off the top of my head, but google should find it.

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/09/2019 00:16

When I was a photo lab manager, disposable cameras were very popular and we had a special bin for used ones which always went off for recycling. However, this was early noughties and it was geared up for it then. (they might have even gone to Kodak for recycle..not sure)
I don't know if recyclers would take them now?
SLR is the way to go.. I take photos with mine most days

soddingsoda · 05/09/2019 00:41

you can go to boots to get the developed - I can't remember the cost but it's around a tenner all in all probably around £20 from buying a camara to getting it developed (cheaper than a Polaroid).

I find I capture better pictures on a disposable as shutter speed is quicker than most mobiles i've used - great for nights out/festivals/parties as you can throw them in a bag and if your phone dies vola. You also don't have to spend five minutes of people asking to retake the photo as they don't like it etc etc.

Environmentally we can all be better - I buy mobiles/electronics second hand and use them until they die due to all the metals/minerals unethically sourced and generally how electronics are shit for the environment and yet here we all are online.

Unless you're living on a self sufficient homested cut off from the rest of the world wearing foraged cow hind as clothing i don't think any of us are able to throw stones.

OooErMissus · 05/09/2019 01:05

Why bring a disposable camera into the mix, when it's easy enough to print from your phone?

There are apps where you just upload the photos you want printed, and then they arrive in the post a couple of days later.

Easy and cheap as chips. Easier than shlepping into a physical shop, and getting them printed, even.

And no single-use disposable cameras filling up landfill.

Win-win

OooErMissus · 05/09/2019 01:07

Unless you're living on a self sufficient homested cut off from the rest of the world wearing foraged cow hind as clothing i don't think any of us are able to throw stones.

To be fair, this isn't a solid argument, as it suggests that unless you're perfect, you may as well not even try to make even small, achievable changes.

stucknoue · 05/09/2019 01:14

Buy a film camera then, disposable ones are poor quality

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 05/09/2019 01:22

This is a thing again? I had them at my wedding in 1996, some of the photos were hilarious, but hardly high quality. They do look as if they have some kind of nostalgia filter from the 90s though.

LoreleiRock · 05/09/2019 01:22

Use an app, fool.
