Prince Harry - AIBU?

Prince Harry saying "we can all do better" has really irked me- aibu?! He has every want and need satisfied while the majority of us and trying to do right by the environment whilst making ends meet. He is becoming very sanctimonious!

And insofar as you can tell from the snippets we see on telly, he seems really engaged and interested in the things he does, and warm and friendly with the people he meets.

Eton doesn't 'get' people A Levels. What a very strange idea. They may provide excellent teaching, but the pupils have to sit the exams themselves. Unfortunately many of the parents of pupils at private schools are under the same delusion you are, and it causes no end of misery for the teachers.

SamanthaBrique · 10/09/2019 09:11

FWIW I also had a friend in the airforce who'd met William several times and said he was a nice, ordinary guy and very down to earth. Also very tall!

BertrandRussell · 10/09/2019 09:15

“Eton doesn't 'get' people A Levels. What a very strange idea.“
Sorry. Shorthand for “with the excellent teaching, lots of individual attention and the optimum study opportunities Eton provides, it would be pretty unlikely foe a reasonably academic person not to get decent A Levels” Sheesh!

For goodness’ sake, you must have known that the word “get” was simply a manner of speaking. Yet you seem to be pretending to take it literally.

Article today in the Sun online (yes, I clicked on it, mea culpa. Don't know if it was by Emily Anderson or whoever) quoting Joanna Lumley praising the queen for being frugal.

When you stay with her, apparently, you sleep on second-hand sheets and eat off second-hand china using second-hand cutlery.
Just like "Second-Hand Rose" in the song.*

Might these also be called "antiques" or is she really a keen car-booter?

I realise this is just JL's opinion seen through the Sun's lens.

*I'm perfectly prepared to believe that she's wearing "second-hand pearls" like the woman in the song.
I had to buy mine new. I've no doubt that that's "chavvy". Sigh...

SamanthaBrique · 10/09/2019 10:06

The idea that the Queen is frugal is the cleverest piece of spin in royal family history!

BertrandRussell · 10/09/2019 10:08

Funny, isn’t. I find the idea of her “playing frugal” a lot more offensive than the idea of her wrapping all her Christmas presents in gold leaf. It really means they think we’re stupid.

LaMarschallin · 10/09/2019 10:12

Spin?

But...but....she irons wrapping paper!
You can't say fairer than that.

And - according to the Sun - has 30 or 40 bags she's had for years.
It doesn't mention how many she's just had for a week or so.

diddl · 10/09/2019 10:16

I think that HM might be "frugal" in that she keeps things for a while & reuses.

But her non everyday clothes/bags/shoes are bespoke aren't they?

And isn't she supposed to have quite a few (200) of those Launer handbags?

LaMarschallin · 10/09/2019 10:17

And - according to the Sun - has 30 or 40 bags she's hadfor years.

Also, could be she's had 30 or 40 bags for years.

I've got 1 I've had for years.

Mind you, I've got another 5 or so long-lived ones too, but it doesn't make the first statement untrue.

diddl · 10/09/2019 10:18

Well a lot of us will never buy 30 bags in our lifetime!

BertrandRussell · 10/09/2019 10:18

My main complaint about the Queen is that she doesn’t wear pretty coloured shoes. Her clothes are lovely (and obviously all from Primark- Meghan is the only Royal who wears designer) but she only ever wears black shoes with them.

LaMarschallin · 10/09/2019 10:26

Well a lot of us will never buy 30 bags in our lifetime!

I know.
I think I may actually be agreeing with you.

I bet she's got bags of bags coming out of her ears! But it can still be true (for a given value of "true" that she has 40 she's kept for years.

Plus the other 160. Or whatever.

I suppose I was saying the article was a bit silly and to believe she's frugal in that she stints on anything she wants is a myth.

BertrandRussell · 10/09/2019 10:28

“Well a lot of us will never buy 30 bags in our lifetime!“

Are we including Bags for Life? I reckon I’ve got about 30 of those in the cupboard under the sink.....

LaurieMarlow · 10/09/2019 10:46

Just to recap. The queen has the following ...

7 enormous palaces stuffed to the gills with art and antiques beyond most people's imaginings
A 7 billion pound jewellery collection
An entirely bespoke wardrobe
Her own private train
Until relatively recently her own private yacht
An army of staff to see to her every need

I find calling her 'frugal' absolutely mindblowing.

Who is doing her PR? Can we give this firm a lifetime achievement award for their spectacular success in duping the masses?

Tonnerre · 10/09/2019 10:49

Does she personally own all of that, though? I suspect the legal position is much more complicated.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 10/09/2019 10:51

I thought most if not all of those palaces actually belong to the public?

Also the most stupendous items of Jewelry and at least some of the art.

All belongs to us.

LaurieMarlow · 10/09/2019 10:55

Some she owns some technically belongs to the state.

That's not necessarily the point though. She has access to it all. The public don't. Why would you ever need to buy jewellery/furniture when you have such priceless objects right there at your disposal?

I read that article (god help me) and it cites the following as examples of her frugality

Wearing clothes more than once
Using tupperware
Eating left over food
Travelling on her own private train
And (my fav) dowgrading her staff's christmas presents from Harrods puddings to Tesco. What a woman.

nononever · 10/09/2019 10:56

I thought most if not all of those palaces actually belong to the public?

I don't know about any others but Balmoral Castle is privately owned by the Royals.

LaurieMarlow · 10/09/2019 10:56

All belongs to us.

Lovely. So if you want one of the tiaras for a night out, can you get hold of it?

If you'd like some nice artwork for your bedroom, are you giving her a call?

Grin
LaurieMarlow · 10/09/2019 10:57

Balmoral and Sandringham are Windsor family owned.

LaMarschallin · 10/09/2019 10:57

All belongs to us

Gosh.

Does that mean I can have a go of one of the tiaras?

And perhaps a pair of dangly diamond earrings? Jilly Cooper says they light up a face.

SamanthaBrique · 10/09/2019 11:03

Next time I'm passing Buck House I'll demand to be allowed in because, as a member of public, I own it!
