Prince Harry saying "we can all do better" has really irked me- aibu?! He has every want and need satisfied while the majority of us and trying to do right by the environment whilst making ends meet. He is becoming very sanctimonious!

And like it or not, the banana writing ended up raising a lot of money for that particular charity. Something that's always forgotten when it's mentioned.

Dongdingdong · 09/09/2019 20:02

Good, so can we stop harping on about the extravagant engagement dress?

The engagement dress is a different point. £56k was obscene - and appeared even more so when contrasted against Kate’s choice.

separatelives · 09/09/2019 20:08

Sconesat4 put into words what a lot of us feel. Why do people keep harping on about the other royals doing exactly the same but they don't get criticised. No FFS, the other royals don't do exactly the same at all. Or if they do they keep a lower profile. But virtue signallers are trying to imply dislike of MM is because of ulterior motives. Nonsense, everyone loved her when she first appeared on the scene. If she's lost popularity it's of her own doing.

Btw any royal supporting charities means nothing much more than putting their name to it. Hardly deserving of praise. They have to do something to justify their existence. They get enough out of us.

Exactly. The people doing the real hard work are doing so quietly, behind the scenes, often for little or no pay.

The whole 'good works' aspect of the royals is fairly new, and was designed to give the royals some kind of raison d'etre in a democratic age where royalty has no obvious function. But even the 'hardest working' royals have a very very cushy life compared to just about anyone in the real world, and they enjoy it at our expense. So none of them deserve any praise.

Unfortunately for Meghan, public mood is against her at this moment and the papers are doing what they’ve always done which is to build someone up just to knock them down.

Kate was the target for many years until she became the wife of heir to throne.

There has always been a different relationship between the press and the monarch. The only time that was close to being breached was when Diana died.

But that served to highlight how infrequently the Queen is openly criticised and she actually listened to what she realised was the overwhelming public mood. The Queen understands how crucial public affection is to the RF.

while standing in front of a priceless gold piano

I very much doubt “priceless” and “gold piano” - Confused - belong in the same sentence. Seems very “chavvy” to me.

What on earth does “mean? Is is urban slang?

What on earth does “merch” mean? Is it urban slang?

separatelives · 09/09/2019 20:27

Kind of proves a point then doesn't it. There'll always be nit picking with the royals, some worse than others. Who bloody cares, we shouldn't have them. They'll always be a bone of contention. None of them are in need of anyone on here rushing to defend them that's for sure. I should imagine they laugh at that sort.

NoTheresa · 09/09/2019 20:27

Ah. How very tasteful!

Yeah I'll never ever understand why some people feel the need to defend the antics of complete strangers who wouldn't cross the road for them, or probably anyone else either.

I should imagine they laugh at that sort.

Well, the ones who've just hired an American PR firm known for polishing the images of alleged sex offenders and going after critics on social media would surely welcome it very much.

Basically, being unofficially paid to wear certain clothes/shoes/jewellery/cosmetics or promote products or services.

Exactly. The people doing the real hard work are doing so quietly, behind the scenes, often for little or no pay.

A doctor friend of mine told me that Kate regularly visits the local children’s hospice where she works, without any fanfare or media attention. She spends a lot of time sitting and quietly talking with the children and their parents.

NoTheresa · 09/09/2019 20:36

Thank you. You have saved me the trouble of asking what a “tin hat” is.

As A listers do on the red carpet? Well, that surely doesn’t apply to any member of our beloved Royal family.

IcedPurple · 09/09/2019 20:44

I think it's usually pretty up-front with celebs on the red carpet. They will say straight out that their dress is an Armani or a Christian Dior and everyone knows they either got it for free or were even paid to wear it.

"Merching" is supposed to be a bit more subtle - think some random Kardashian just so happening to be photographed coming out of the gym wearing a certain brand of shoes, or some other minor celeb who again just so happened to be snapped walking down the street slurping coffee with the brand name of a certain coffee chain conveniently visible.

Well, that surely doesn’t apply to any member of our beloved Royal family

Course not!
