Prince Harry - AIBU?

Prince Harry saying "we can all do better" has really irked me- aibu?! He has every want and need satisfied while the majority of us and trying to do right by the environment whilst making ends meet. He is becoming very sanctimonious!

I agree that leaving a four month is reasonable, just because I wouldn't have done it doesn't make it wrong.
But she is a hell of along way away if something urgent occured.
Fergie and Andrew left Beatrice at about 6 weeks for 6 weeks to tour Austrailia and I was not a mother then but still thought it wasn't great for parent and baby bonding.

LaurieMarlow · 09/09/2019 09:35

Leaving small children for extended periods is one of those slightly bizarre royal customs that I can’t get my head around.

I was shocked at Kate flying so far when George was tiny.

And the Queen seems to have left Charles for extended periods as a young child. He was a bit older, but months and months.

IrmaFayLear · 09/09/2019 09:37

Well, posh people are different. Boarding schools, nannies, strategic marriages...

At least Meghan is doing one thing the "royal" way!!

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 09:40

I don’t think it’s necessarily a Royal thing- I think it’s an old fashioned posh thing “The climate’s not suitable for white children” Grin The Chalet School would have gone bust without that attitude.

However, even Mumsnetters often leave their babies for two nights!

LaMarschallin · 09/09/2019 09:41

I find that one very odd too.
I didn't hold much of a brief for Diana but she seemed more reluctant to do this.

Surprised about Kate and Meghan doing it since they weren't even brought up to think it was, in some way, normal.
Especially Kate as everyone goes on the closeness of the Middleton family.
Presumably Carol wouldn't have pushed off for so long and for so soon, afaik.

LaurieMarlow · 09/09/2019 09:42

How long did Molly Bettany leave her children for again, 9 years?Grin

Yeah, a couple of nights, with the child in the care of his father is nothing, especially in the context of royal norms.

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 09:43

“Surprised about Kate and Meghan doing it since they weren't even brought up to think it was, in some way, normal.”

You do know Meghan was away for two nights, don’t you? Lumping that into “extended periods” is proper spin.

Ohthatsfabulousdarling · 09/09/2019 09:47

It's a real shame, I've always liked Harry, always liked what I saw of Meghan, recently I've found myself annoyed by them.

His attitude isnt nice is it? Nobody judge me, because you're not perfect, well very few are flying that many times and in private jets in such a small window of time.

SamanthaBrique · 09/09/2019 09:48

And the Queen seems to have left Charles for extended periods as a young child. He was a bit older, but months and months.

For about 6 months when he was 5 or 6. And on her return she went to the races before going back to see him and Anne. There is some quite sad footage of her returning - he's jumping up and down with excitement at seeing his mummy again but she merely shakes his hand and pats him on the shoulder. Arguably more damaging than leaving a 4mo for 48 hours but that was the way things were done back then.

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 09:56

“His attitude isnt nice is it?”
This so weird. I see her being friendly and smiley doing royal duties, looking loving and delighted with Harry and the baby, enthusiastic and hands on with her charities.... but other people see “not nice”.

LaMarschallin · 09/09/2019 09:59

You do know Meghan was away for two nights, don’t you?

Yes. If I didn't, I could be sure you'd tell me.

I didn't "lump" that together into “extended periods” for proper spin.
If you're saying I did it's inaccurate and a bit rude. I'm not here to "spin" anything.

I wouldn't have gone away for a holiday sans child like Kate. I couldn't have gone away for two nights like Meghan because I was breastfeeding and was rubbish at pumping.

I know lots of people do so that's fine.
I was suggesting that the entrenched attitudes of the rf may well have been at odds with those marrying into it. For the purposes of family harmony, perhaps it's as well they're not.

That doesn't mean boarding school - I'm aware of those and they generally don't take babies, afaik.
Even Madge Bettany may have balked at that.

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 10:04

But we don’t know if Meghan has bought into the RF culture of leaving children for extended periods. We do know that Kate has.

LaMarschallin · 09/09/2019 10:09

But we don’t know if Meghan has bought into the RF culture of leaving children for extended periods. We do know that Kate has.

I wouldn't presume to know anything.
I might make opinions based on what I read which is no more than anyone else here can do (I presume?).

For example, I have made the opinion that some posters would make a far better job of it than I could if they put their minds to putting a "spin" on things.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/09/2019 10:13

FWIW the Queen's 6 month absence when Charles was small was down to the Commonwealth Tour . It was unfortunate that she had the job dumped on her at 25 with young kids, but the tour was regarded as obligatory back then - and may still be in the next reign for all I know

And quite how that will work with Camilla in tow is anyone's guess, since she didn't last more than a few days on the last Australia trip ...

LaMarschallin · 09/09/2019 10:23

A quick heads up.

I think Ohthatsfabulousdarling was referring to Harry re the attitude quote, not Meghan.

As in:

It's a real shame, I've always liked Harry, always liked what I saw of Meghan, recently I've found myself annoyed by them.

His attitude isnt nice is it?

An easy mistake to make even if one didn't have an agenda. Which you obviously don't.

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 10:24

“I wouldn't presume to know anything.

We know that Kate has- because she’s done it. We don’t know whether Meghan has- because she hasn’t yet.

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 10:25

Of course I’ve got an agenda. Everyone who posts on these threads has an agenda!

MrsBlythe · 09/09/2019 10:30

But then the Queen was willing (expected?) to leave her kids behind on a regular basis even before she became monarch. When she was Princess Elizabeth and living in Malta with Philip on naval duties the kids were left back in UK with nannies!!!

LaMarschallin · 09/09/2019 10:35

Of course I’ve got an agenda

Oh, right.

NoTheresa · 09/09/2019 10:37

For example, I have made the opinion that some posters would make a far better job of it than I could if they put their minds to putting a "spin" on things.

How hilarious to think that there are some posters on this thread who actually think it is their place to put a “spin” on things in order to protect their beloved chosen Royals! 😳🤣

NoTheresa · 09/09/2019 10:38

And they have “an agenda”?!?! It’s all a bit Dominic Cummings. Lol

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 10:39

Oh, come on! If lining Meghan up with the Queen and Kate in the same “leaving their children for extended periods” camp isn’t spin then I don’t know what is! Grin

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 10:40

Everyone posting on Royal threads has an agenda. Sorry to break it to you!

NoTheresa · 09/09/2019 10:40

That’s the Dominic Cummings who is in such spider like control that there are no memes of him out there. 😳😳😳

NoTheresa · 09/09/2019 10:42

Spinning for M&H. What a fine way to spend precious time. Lol
