Prince Harry saying "we can all do better" has really irked me- aibu?! He has every want and need satisfied while the majority of us and trying to do right by the environment whilst making ends meet. He is becoming very sanctimonious!

Well said Rita.

The American crowd was a disgrace as always. It is incredibly rude to applaud service faults and unforced errors. I can't understand why anyone would want to be part of that agressive braying audience trying to intimidate a 19 year old to lose against her life time idol. American tennis supporters have no manners at all.

To be fair I think that should be some tennis supporters have no manners at all.

Some of the crowd displays at Wimbledon were less than edifying this year!

JeansNTees · 08/09/2019 08:53

100% agree Rita.

Caucho · 08/09/2019 08:54

Harry is right in that we can all do better. But I hate hypocrisy. I know some press will always have it in for them but in terms of the general public I doubt most people would be outraged about some Royals flying around and jet setting but for the fact they’re lecturing and virtue signalling about the green stuff. If we can all pay the tenner extra to offset global warming then cool. Why not just charge everyone the tenner and we can all then fly guilt free eh?

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 08/09/2019 08:54

But everything is so much worse in America Jacques, it's very noticable. For example it is the only country where when a ball goes into a crowd it isn't returned. This quickly reduces the number of balls in play and the balls become worn very quickly which effects how they hit. The crowd are not like anywhere else, I once saw a 1000 match stopped for 15 minutes because a parent had gone outside leaving a couple of approx 7 year olds to run around and cause havoc. Aussie crowds are boisterous and lively but in a postitive way. Whereas as Medevev will have to play against not only one of the all time greats this afternoon,Rafa, but also the crowd who have taken against him and will boo him throughout.

I don’t agree necessarily.

The examples in your first post were exactly what occurred at Wimbledon this year during a Federer match (I forget his opponent). It was utterly embarrassing.

The hideous partisan nature of crowds is starting to make the slams really unpleasant to watch.

Harry doesn't have a backstory or narrative that's sufficiently interesting for the US audience. Yes, he lost his mother as a child, but that's not an arc that has evolved or been allowed to evolve. His mother was a global superstar whose story continued to develop with her divorce and subsequent travails, making her catnip for journalists.

DoY Sarah had a similar story with added weight and money issues. Meghan is of interest to the US audience because she's American, having a fairytale life and is mixed race. Harry can't go to he US and build his celebrity unless he changes something- leaves the RF, gives up his place in the succession or something truly newsworthy that sets him apart. Meghan on the other hand doesn't have to do too much more to give herself momentum.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I imagine that one of the reasons for breaking up the "Fab Four" Hmm is that the Foundation is actually too limited in scope and appeal for a global audience and Meghan understands that. She's far cleverer and more commercially savvy than Harry. I don't know what she sees in him tbh.

Caucho · 08/09/2019 09:02

Watching Serena for years really? I doubt they’re besties just like she doesn’t go way back with the Clooney’s. These celebs wouldn’t have had the time of day for her until she entwined herself with the Royals. Megan didn’t even get an invite to Serena’s wedding I understand so hardly a close or long running friendship

I think he is between a rock and a hard place. He was born into a role that was not of his choosing and when he opts to use his high profile to flag up environmental concerns he gets vilified. Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

I do not think his contention that he took private jets to safeguard his family is entirely unreasonable.

I am not a monarchist by the way. I just think we should play fair by him - we need the revenue and high profile that the royals bring for our tourist industry.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 09:15

Rich woman flies to New York for the weekend. Hold the front page!

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 08/09/2019 09:16

Federer audiences are different Jacques. They are not tennis fans, they are Fed fans. They travel all around the world and only buy tickets when the schedule is announced and they know when Fed is playing. Then they turn up in force all dressed in red with handmade flags etc to support him. Fed fans wouldn't be expected to know the difference between a forced and unforced error, too busy chanting Lets go Roger.

JacquesHammer · 08/09/2019 09:19

Federer audiences are different Jacques

It wasn’t only in Federer matches, he was one example

You clearly want US tennis audiences to be The Worst for some reason. I don’t think the problem is venue related, it’s a certain type of fan related. Anyway major derail and seems pointless to continue given the difference in our points of view.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 09:21

“This quickly reduces the number of balls in play and the balls become worn very quickly which effects how they hit.”
Yep- I can imagine that “I’m sorry, Ms Williams- we can’t change the balls because the crowd won’t give them back” Grin

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 08/09/2019 09:22

Am I the only person this side of the Atlantic who had never heard of her until pops up as harry’s girlfriend and then the engagement and marriage.
I am not much of a royal watcher and really Harry is to far down the totem pole for me to care what hypocrisy he spouts next but it does grind my gears that the tax payer funds it all. He needs to decide whether he wants to be a working royal and so paid for by the public purse or he wants to be a private individual and persue celebrity status in which case he funds himself and family. He can’t be both.
Unfortunately he doesnt seem to want to listen to his advisors who must be telling him this. But then that doesn’t surprise me as he as always struck me as a bit of a manchild. The nice enough but not so bright spare royal who has no real use anymore as William has already ensured to continuation of the royal line.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 08/09/2019 09:22

Oh come on Bertrand. Rich woman flies to NY for a weekend to attend a high profile 2 hour event, which is reported on by press all around the world, only a few days after her husband launches (after flying to Amsterdam) a climate change initiative and asks us all to reduce our carbon footprint. You are defending the undefendable.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/09/2019 09:24

Reminds me of the models who made a big boo ha for PETA (I’d rather go naked than wear fur campaign) then next season were sashaying the catwalk in... fur...

Caucho · 08/09/2019 09:24

I’m happy to be corrected if true Hippo and don’t mind admitting when I’m wrong but I find little evidence to substantiate it. Just a powder puff interview from Serena where she says she had met her once at some function and they ‘hit it off’ but that could mean anything and they just had a chat for 2 minutes. I’m sure she’s exaggerating it now. I do know Megan didn’t attend her wedding. If I’m wrong I’ll apologise (maybe she reads here?) and stand corrected. Now on to the Clooneys...

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 08/09/2019 09:25

No Bertrand. Do you know anything about tennis? What happens is the balls become worn and the server can't find a decent one to serve with. The ball boys then count up the balls, talk to the unpire and the shortfall number are then brought on to court and added to the current stock. This causes considerable disruption and delay the match which affects the flow of play. Everywhere else in the world understands this and throws the balls back.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 09:27

“He needs to decide whether he wants to be a working royal and so paid for by the public purse or he wants to be a private individual”
Insofar as any of them “works” he does loads. I’m sure I read somewhere that he does more engagements than William does. Obviously it is “work” in the loosest sense of the word-but they do all need to be judged by the same standard.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 09:34

I tell a lie. William did 220 engagements last year and Harry did 193. Does that mean Harry isn’t a “working royal” and William is?

Love the poster who thinks Meghan should have been supporting Serena’s opponent because Commonwealth. Like the poster on a previous thread who said it was unsporting of her to support Serena at Wimbledon and she should have been “browsing the outside courts” Grin

JeansNTees · 08/09/2019 09:42

Mishappening I think that he has much more agency than you give him credit for. He skipped seeing the Queen at Balmoral. If it is true, he ignores advisers and does what he and Meghan want to do. Unfortunately for him, what he does goes against the drivel that comes from his mouth.
And next, assuming they don't jet off anywhere else in the meantime, a taxpayer funded jolly across the world to Africa to show them what exactly? I'm not sure the Commonwealth want to see how rich and privileged Harry is. Is he going to tell the continent of Africa that they can do better with their carbon footprint?? Who benefits from this extended holiday?

Caucho · 08/09/2019 09:43

Most of the Royals lead extravagant lifestyles and there’s definitely a sense that the likes of the Mail have in for Harry and Megan. The difference is that the others seem to understand their roles. William and Catherine are pros. It’s hard for the spares but what Megan has done has pushed them towards being ‘celebs’ and when you add them jumping on the climate change bandwagon together with the private jets they’ve made themselves fair game. Just do the jets and curb the eco warriorism.

The only ‘normal’ Royals seem to be Princess Anne and her refusing titles for her kids. Of course Zara is posh but comes across as very grounded publicly (don’t know her so can’t vouch for her personally).

Saying all the level of criticism towards Megan is fair in comparison to Air-miles Andrew who has more to answer for than simply gallivanting on jollies
