Aibu to think private school kids wearing their logoed school jumpers at the weekend is weird?

Isn’t it a bizarre stealth boast, except it’s not stealthy at all and a bit attention seeking? I know several children who do this. If your child does, why?

You’d never catch a state educated child wearing their school jumper at the weekend. If my child started to, I’d suggest they changed.

For the final time - it’s not for school events. They wear them during the school holidays when they are playing with the other kids!

Playing with other kids suggests quite a young child. Maybe the jumper is comfortable and cosy and they just like wearing it.

Mrsjayy · 03/09/2019 09:17

The leavers hoodies have a few months left yet Grin

The private school here used to be open on a saturday you would occasionally see kids in uniform.

Mrsjayy · 03/09/2019 09:20

Maybe the parent just wants EVERYBODY to know which school they go too or they paid so much on the fees and uniform they can't afford anything else to wear.

Manontry · 03/09/2019 09:21

Yes, mine wore hers out and about.

StarlingsInSummer · 03/09/2019 09:21

@TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble I was more thinking how much I’d have hated Saturday lessons!

Manontry · 03/09/2019 09:24

I've just checked dds timetable and she has MATHS on Saturday morning Shock

MsTSwift · 03/09/2019 09:26

I know op I get it. We saw a few in town yesterday as my dd 13 said - “it’s all about the merch” Grin. We were too polite to comment but think we were in agreement that it was rather tragic.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 09:28

Manontry - do you know why?

Children round here hang out at the park in the holidays - it’s very safe. They are aged between 9-12/13. I do wonder if it’s private school one upmanship as there are a few different private schools involved.

I do consciously object to private school (we could afford it but choose not to as we don’t think our kids deserve a better education than anyone else) so I suppose it touches a particular nerve. It’s concerning to me that a private school logo can become a local brand like Nike that kids aspire to - and I suppose that it my ultimate concern.

I went to Saturday school - perfectly normal for private schools!

I didn't mind it - I had from 12pm on Saturdays to socialise and go out (how many teenagers are up at socialising first thing on a Saturday morning anyway?!). I loved the holidays - three weeks at Christmas, three at Easter, two in October, plus a week in May and February, then nine weeks summer break every year.

Bluntness100 · 03/09/2019 09:29

My daughter is privately educated, as are my neighbours kids and as were my daughters friends, I've never once seen any private school kids wearing their uniform of a weekend through choice ie when not attending something at school. Not once.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 09:32

Bluntness - good to hear. It’s a bit of a trend here.

I'm with you op. I'd imagine the dc have plenty of 'cosy' jumpers to choose to wear in the holidays.

It is showing off, but sadly (barring private schools for those with special needs) I find kids that attend private school do think the sun shines out of their own fantastic arses. They, along with their parents, want the whole world to know they are privileged.

Saddler · 03/09/2019 09:34

You don't think your kids deserve a better education, I can understand, but not wanting to give them the best education if you can afford it is weird

MsTSwift · 03/09/2019 09:35

The rivalry in our city seems to be between the different private / state schools it’s quite funny. So the state schools slag off each other and the private’s do too. But they don’t criticise schools outside their sector. So dd will criticise one other state school as they think girls at her state school are “posh”. Dds private school friends all look down on one of the other private schools. Well that is what I have deduced from my ear wigging Grin

Gosh that's very bitter.

adaline · 03/09/2019 09:35

Is it full uniform or just sports hoodies or similar?

Plenty of state school pupils wear their leavers hoodies or PE hoodies out of school - I see it around here all the time. No more of a statement than wearing Nike or Adidas. Unless you ban your teenagers from ever wearing anything labelled?

Blimey! Who pissed on your cornflakes?

Nofunkingworriesmate · 03/09/2019 09:36

Maybe they are playing with their friends after uniformed school event? My daughter is in the park after school with her uniform on
Maybe it’s holiday camp/childcare where uniform is expected?

Mrsjayy · 03/09/2019 09:38

I was involved in the weirdest conversation over the summer i was in the company of 2 women talking about their own private schools how they were in old girls clubs it was very oďd how involved they still were.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 09:38

Sadler - that depends what you think ‘best’ is. What’s best for my kids is the local state school, so their demanding parents can be part of a wave that demands better education for everyone, not just the lucky few.

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 03/09/2019 09:38

Other than leavers hoodies, kids don't like to wear uniform when they don't have to. That's universal. And since time began.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 09:39

And forvthe last time - it’s not for school events!! It’s for hanging out.

I do let my kids wear brands. It’s sad that fee paying education has become one round here.

OP posts:
adaline · 03/09/2019 09:39

Is it full uniform though or just hoodies?

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 09:40

And loads of the state kids have hoodies. I haven’t seen a single one worn in school holidays. Perhaps they don’t carry the same brand value?
