to think "everyone will have the food they need" is a way of saying that food choice will be limited

It's what Gove said this morning when asked about food after Brexit.

"Everyone will have the food they need"

I am sure that's true....and who needs a wide choice of food anyway.

Don't you have brambles at the end of your garden? What ho old chap.

WrongKindOfFace · 01/09/2019 19:19

“I wonder if you have a normal BMI, if we should be over eating in the lead up to 31st Oct. Otherwise we’ll be the first to starve.”

There will be plenty of gammon. Lovely with a slice of pineapple from your stash.*

No-deal Brexit: Sainsbury’s boss says there will be gaps on shelves within a week under Boris Johnson’s plans

Former Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King warned that fresh food shortages would start to happen by 7 November if the Government pushed through with a no-deal Brexit.

Food shortages will come just in time for Christmas.....

Will there be enough Brussel sprouts - or will they be off the table because of the name?

... is that why the smart strategy is supposed to be, MPs go thru proper form to implement anti-No-Deal legislation, expect it to fail when proprogued Parliament... then expect not able to stop No Deal but proceed to VoNC before 31 October, which will mean election around early December.

AT which point we shall see how nicely Xmas is shaping up for "The People".

Crashing out is just another stage in getting some kind of transition deal sorted with EU, I reckon.

Ohflippineck · 01/09/2019 19:41

Camomila

“And rape fields - but I don't know what that's used for.”

Oil. Like Gove said a week ago, “we’ll all get the calories we need”. We can all drink copious amounts of high calorie rape seed oil. Bit unfortunate that there’ll probably be a simultaneous loo roll shortage as the European wood pulp gets held up in lorry queues ..... hey ho. Brex-shit.

Bravelurker · 01/09/2019 19:42

@timshelthechoice, yes if you have no gas or electricity then yes, cooking from scratch will be difficult if not impossible.
I get that.
Just so you know, I did not vote for this shower of shite, but I was thinking out loud for how I personally am going to cope with food shortages. Sorry for the insensitivity.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 01/09/2019 19:57

"Will there be enough Brussel sprouts - or will they be off the table because of the name?"

The weather has been quite favourable for British growers I think. Or is that hope? Because sprouts are one of the veg that are really rank if frozen.

Shockers · 01/09/2019 20:01

We can call them what we like after 31st Oct Sad

Ramsbottom sprouts, anyone?

elderlyhippo · 01/09/2019 20:02

Thank you for your kind words jasjas73

I am female. The overall stats show that people looking at the nation as a whole were healthier. Not every individual. The clearest evidence is longevity.

My apologies for not spelling that out clearly enough

timshelthechoice · 01/09/2019 20:54

Don't you have brambles at the end of your garden? What ho old chap.

I must send the gardener out to bring them in, can't be doing with all those nasty jaggy things that grow round brambles and besides I've much to be getting on with in the orangery.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 01/09/2019 20:59

It'll be fine, I've got a brilliant gruel recipe, I don't know what everyone's moaning about anyway, a bit of scurvy or rickets never killed anyone.
(I could have drop kicked my fucking tv through the window watching that smarmy cunt this morning)

My biggest brexit fear personally ( I have bigger worries for other people) is red wine. Lack of, or price going up massively. Because british red wine is the shittest in the world. Can anyone say anything to reassure me?

chomalungma · 01/09/2019 21:54

And of course, the booze cruise will be affected by the Customs Allowance when you come back to the UK.

I wonder if any of our brave journalists are going to ask Gove what he meant by that statement?

What about home brew?

AutumnCrow · 01/09/2019 23:03

I make my own wine for about £1.90 - £2 a bottle. It's very drinkable, and excellent for cooking boozy sauces and casseroles.

If I don't use concentrate it's a lot cheaper. So I might go pick some blackberries this week.

3luckystars · 01/09/2019 23:10

Interesting......

HelenaDove · 01/09/2019 23:11

Its only a small thing in the scheme of things but im wondering where hairdressers get their hair dye from.

jasjas1973 · 01/09/2019 23:25

elderlyhippo no problem.

But you are wrong, some socio economic grps may see a decline in life expectancy (due to poverty) but overall trends are still on the up.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/health-profile-for-england-2018/chapter-1-population-change-and-trends-in-life-expectancy.

In any case, most baby boomers did not experience too much rationing, it ended in 1954, rationing had been gradually lifted long before this date, so generally speaking, 'boomers had a far better diet than the generation that experienced it during WW2.

Facts, inconvenient aren't they?

underneaththeash · 01/09/2019 23:35

Are you all mad? There's absolutely no suggestion that rationing's going to come in we have tinned food to last decades.
We may just not have fresh raspberries available in the Ocado order.

SequinnedSlippers · 02/09/2019 00:00

Did wonder if that Fast 800 diet doing the rounds was just a coincidence.

Dad-of-four fears his children will be taken away because of food shortages

A foodbank organiser said people in Liverpool are living in 'absolute squalor' and warned that a no-deal Brexit could have an unimaginable impact

From Twitter Its not just foods and medicine. But other stuff that is needed for hospitals to function.

Urgh. I spoke to a guy who works for the MoD who said "Sure, the first 2-3 years after Brexit will be a train wreck, that's a given. But you have to think in the medium to long term, and once we've toughed it out for a few years, it'll be brilliant." FFS.

Rationing.

He means rationing.
