The government is starting an advertising campaign next week telling us all to "Get Ready!".

What else can it mean?

By the way, it's costing £100m.

Well I have. Seems silly not too. It has been all over the media. I just have my normal stuff in but a lot more of it. Anyone that thinks this isn't important now will be the ones adding to the problems later. If nothing else prices are rising due to the pound diving.

zackly · 30/08/2019 15:54

I also dont think eu should be preventing all trade, like a trade embargo, as its not as if we've been flouting international humanity laws or something.

I give up.

squee123 · 30/08/2019 15:54

I'm embracing stockpiling as an excellent household management tool and will continue to do it long term. Massive shop every 3 or 4 months means less overall time spent shopping and much less running out of things and frantic running to the shops. We always have store cupboard ingredients in for a range of meals so we're less inclined to get takeaways. If we fall on hard times or have a big unexpected expense we have a store to eat through. Life changing.

4cats2kids · 30/08/2019 15:57

Will there be power cuts?

I’m thinking of stocking my freezer, or should I prioritise canned food?

BarbaraofSeville · 30/08/2019 15:59

We've sort of unintentionally shopped that way for years squee

It's not a massive stockpile, but I just keep a few of canned soup, beans, pulses, pasta, rice, meat portions in the freezer etc etc, mostly all bought on special offer and then just 'shop from the freezer/cupboards', topped up with fresh stuff acquired as needed. Saves a significant amount compared with just buying what you need for the week.

Ironically, I'm trying to run a lot of it down at the moment as it's got a bit ridiculous and some things have been there for far too long.

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 16:00

I can't wait for cheery patriotic getting ready-ness.
I might laugh my arse off at all the No Dealers on here trying to make tbe thing they've been slagging us off about into a good thing.
"Four legs good, two legs better" anyone? (For fans of Animal Farm by George Orwell.

@HappyParent2000 Waitrose had no chocolate raisins yesterday. They sent me yogurt coated kids' raisins instead. I was not happy. I have needs.

Mamamia456 · 30/08/2019 16:10

OP - There is an on line government site explaining what the public need to do to get ready for Brexit, it's about travelling abroad and making sure you have correct paperwork and travel insurance. Is this what you are referring to? No mention of stockpiling food. Are you just trying to scare people?

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 16:11

What's scary @Mamamia456 ? Aren't you ready?

Nousernameforme · 30/08/2019 16:15

Well I've still got my fingers in my ears going la la la in the hopes we wake up and it was all a bad dream.

Could someone tell me what sort of things we will be experiencing shortages of please. Luckily I don't have to worry about medication but what sort of things are we going to run out of? Is it going to be like the fuel shortage when bread and milk ran out. Is it fuel that is going to cause the problems, or is it the fact that we won't have deals with europe anymore that means we simply can't get the stuff we are used to?

Parker231 · 30/08/2019 16:15

I’ve bought extra of items which come from the EU. We eat loads of things like pasta and tinned tomatoes. Have also loads of the only cat food our cat will agree to eat which comes from the Netherlands.

Parker231 · 30/08/2019 16:16

@Nousernameforme - likely shortages will be of things which originate in the EU or need an ingredient which comes from the EU. Check what food you normally eat.

NoCauseRebel · 30/08/2019 16:17

I voted remain but tbh the reactions of those in terms of stockpiling and “getting ready” makes them look like hysterical lunes.

I grew up in parts of Africa where food rationing really was a thing and you know what? We survived.

We do live in a civilised country, and anyone who thinks that Brexit is going to mean resorting to living on pot noodles needs to seriously get a grip.

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 16:19

@Nousernameforme , hard to say. I think the shops will be unpleasant places to be and so you should focus on shelf stable versions of what you like.
I recommend Jack Monroe's Tin Can Cook (some recipes from this are on her website)

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 30/08/2019 16:20

The campaign hasn't been launched yet mamamia.

The gov.uk website you're talking about isn't the same thing.

Mamamia456 · 30/08/2019 16:20

Bellingsurge - If the OP is referring to what I think she is then she is just misleading people and trying to scare them by insinuating that the Government is talking about stockpiling when what it means by "getting ready" is in respect of travelling abroad.

You only have to look at the responses on these threads about brexit to see that some people will start panic buying.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 16:21

Whats hysterical is when a poster says

‘Getting in some extras of food we eat, extra bogroll and some tinned tomatoes’

Then another poster comes on raving about

‘Pot noodles, we survived, get a grip and ‘lunes’

That’s obviously if we are talking about hysterical meaning really really funny

Mamamia456 · 30/08/2019 16:21

Maudbailey - Where have you read about it?

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 30/08/2019 16:21

What a surprise, a sneering Brexiteer who, it turns out, just hasn't done their research.

Smelborp · 30/08/2019 16:22

It’s people stockpiling that’ll cause the shortages. Absolute idiots

Don’t be ridiculous. Panic buying causes shortages. Stockpiling is adding extra to your trolly every time you go. It allows the shops to stock more and leaves things for others.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 30/08/2019 16:22

mamamia, in the words of all your Brexity friends - google it yourself.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 16:22

Oh and panic buying

Adding an extra 4 pack of tinned tomatoes to your weekly shop = panic buying...apparently

SistemaAddict · 30/08/2019 16:23

Nappies made by Tesco, Asda, and Boots are all made in Belgium. I don't know about other brands. Luckily ds is only in them at night but if you're pregnant or have babies or toddlers then it makes sense to get extra. It never fails to amaze me how many nappies a newborn goes through. Our record was one every ten minutes one night when they were new born.

Is there a link to the Get Ready info please?
