The government is starting an advertising campaign next week telling us all to "Get Ready!".

What else can it mean?

By the way, it's costing £100m.

Is all our loo roll made abroad? I don't think so.
No, it's British loo roll made with British wood pulp from British forests, dont you know?

Venger · 30/08/2019 15:23

60 quid!!!! How the heck do you stockpile on 60 quid? Serious question - my weekly shop for a family of four (2 teens 2 adults) is around 130 quid.

Special offers like BOGOF or 3 for 2 where one goes in the cupboard and the rest goes under the stairs, trips to Aldi/HomeBargains/B&M, basics ranges for things like porridge oats and chopped tomatoes, fruit and veg wholesaler for vegetables I can freeze at home (e.g., £1 for a "stew bag" which has 4-6 onions, 2 large leeks, half a dozen large carrots, and a large swede. Chop, blanche if needed, and freeze for later use).

KisstheTeapot14 · 30/08/2019 15:23

Price of electricity will likely go up. Fresh fruit and veg supply will be compromised. Local authorities are saying nutritional standards for school dinners may need to go oot the window.

The poorest will be hit the most.

We have a small kitchen, small freezer. Not much room for stockpile. I may buy bog rolls, and arm myself with pasta.

Our allotment may get a security upgrade too....booby trap potato beds with mines? Maybe not.

Kale survives all year. We'll all have kale yards. And porridge.
And warm tartan cloaks.

Venger · 30/08/2019 15:24

I didn't count the dippers in my £60, they were bought separately.

KUGA · 30/08/2019 15:31

Scare mongering that's all.
Switch off.
There`s nothing Jo Bloggs can do either way.
100 Million ? where the bloody hell has that come from.
Oh I know all the money the government have saved by taking benefits away from the needy of this country.

Badcat666 · 30/08/2019 15:31

@KisstheTeapot14

Kale lasts because we can find something else to eat other than bloody Kale... "ohhh! Leave the Kale darling, I've found some lovely moss the cat has pissed on and some woodlice!" Grin

Userzzzzz · 30/08/2019 15:32

To a certain extent though buying some items to store is perfectly logical in case there are shortages. Baby formula or nappies for example or other items where you would feel it if you couldn’t get hold of something for a few days and you had run out.

Smotheroffive · 30/08/2019 15:34

I dont think we need to stockpile loo roll, right?

Just the stuff from eu. I also dont think eu should be preventing all trade, like a trade embargo, as its not as if we've been flouting international humanity laws or something.

The EU should be responsible in its relationship winding down, and keeping trading options open.

VapeVamp12 · 30/08/2019 15:34

Maybe Brexit is the answer to the obesity crisis?! Grin

Cornettoninja · 30/08/2019 15:37

Well, the poor and elderly did by enlarge vote for brexit

Elderly, yes but I haven’t seen the statistics on the population to agree that the vulnerable did. Does anyone even break down the figures that way?

In any case i would argue the government at the time should never have held the referendum at that time. People voted on a statement; no draft, no constitution, no manifesto, nothing. Now the country is heading into unknown waters on one word - yes. That is literally only hard fact that people voted for.

so one could say they are reaping what they sowed, hard cheese on the ones that didn't but who said life was fair

I wonder if you believe/understand the current situation for disabled/vulnerable people in this country. It’s truly not an exaggeration that this will cause serious harm and/or death.

I will choose to think that you are being glib as I don’t want to believe that anyone could be really so callous. I think it’s pretty clear which side I’m on and I still wouldn’t wish that on anyone by way of a ‘lesson’. I wouldn’t however shed a tear for anyone who found their on paper wealth up in smoke when brexit finally comes in.

This feels like a virtual war and we’ve sent our weakest off to the front to fight it with toothpicks.

Daffodil101 · 30/08/2019 15:37

Is it a bit like the millennium bug? Because I remember the ensuing zombie apocalypse, and thank god I’d removed the bath panel to stash my tinned pilchards. Ate those pilchards for months when the neighbours weren’t looking.

hereforasillygoosetime · 30/08/2019 15:38

Oh shit. I'm due to give birth (being induced) next week I wonder if the hospital is going to be affected 😭

Madfrogs · 30/08/2019 15:39

According to the doctors we have managed to amass a good 2 year minimum supply of asthma medication. The only other one to worry about would be contraception in this house. We keep a fully stocked cupboards including those stick on stitches.

We tend to have a bulging cupboard anyway so a lack of food would just require some random food mixes.

RosesAndRaindrops · 30/08/2019 15:40

Think millenium bug is now the Brexit threads equivalent of cancel the cheque Grin

BeyondMyWits · 30/08/2019 15:40

Maybe Brexit is the answer to the obesity crisis?!

nah - but with the soon to be shortage of flu vaccine it could be the answer to the pensions crisis.... Grin

Valanice1989 · 30/08/2019 15:43

It’s people stockpiling that’ll cause the shortages. Absolute idiots

Why would stockpiling cause shortages, @Dogsarebetterthancatsok? I honestly don't understand what you mean. The supply chain hasn't been interrupted yet, so when someone buys something, the seller simply orders more of it.

Madfrogs · 30/08/2019 15:43

Obesity, elderly care/pensions and dare I say the unvaccinated in that case beyond Grin

Deathraystare · 30/08/2019 15:44

Well I hope I can still get my medication - or I will come back and haunt them!!!

I have no room to store much food, sadly.

HalloumiGus · 30/08/2019 15:45

So many people have explained already how this differs from the Millenium bug across multiple threads but I guess there's no reasoning with stupid.

Anyone who can stockpile should. It will leave food on the shelves for people who lack the money, space or common sense to do it ahead of time. If it's all a storm in a teacup enjoy a couple of months of cheap food bills or donate to your local food bank. Nothing to lose.

violashift · 30/08/2019 15:46

When it's a hot day the ice lollies, ice cubes sell out. Ok that could be freezer space but what about the bbq, coals and bread buns all sold out over the last heat wave? No interruptions of supply chain. Lots of people wanted it.

Mytupenceworth · 30/08/2019 15:46

The 31st of October is on a Thursday. Friday tends to be the busiest day for freight transport. Alot of haulage companies won't want to be stuck at port with perishable foods so instead will opt not to try travel on the 1st .
People either panic buying or doing their usual grocery shop , will begin to empty shelves. No fresh delivery. More panic buying.

Will continue phone acting up

Brexitstash · 30/08/2019 15:46

Beyond Grin I thought nothing could make me laugh about Brexit

Morgan12 · 30/08/2019 15:46

I can't wait to see the threads on here the week after Brexit 😂

SistemaAddict · 30/08/2019 15:50

House!

Obesity crisis, stockpiling will cause shortages, millennium bug to name 3.
