To think Prince Charles will be our last Monarch

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 09:49

Given that it could be another thirty years before Prince Charles dies, I was wondering if he will be our last Monarch.

I think that a lot will have changed by the time Prince William is due to accede the throne and that the Monarchy will have been abolished by then.

Most people do not realise that Camilla is of course the Princess of Wales now."

Sorry! Premature posting.

Most people do not realise that Camilla is of course the Princess of Wales

Absolutely. Of course she is because she's married to the Prince of Wales.

But there was some ranty piece of journalism in the Daily Mail a while back saying something like "Camilla could be given Diana's title!".

Camilla's already got all of the titles Diana had (the ones Diana had by virtue of being married to the prince of Wales) because she's now married to the prince of Wales.

It's as though some of the population think the title princess of Wales didn't exist before Diana.

I would love to see the whole sorry shitshow come to a peaceful end when the Queen passes away.

OP, I've ticked YABU only because I think they might find a way to skip Charles. I think they've been promoting W&C for some time in order to get us to accept them.

Apart from Charles's divorce etc, I just can't see us having a King who was friends with Jimmy Savile.

lyralalala · 29/08/2019 22:29

I don't think they can. If they find a way around the natural order then they are basically saying their own places don't matter. The whole point of them (to them) is that they are born to a set position. Change that and they are negating their own positions.

The only thing they could possibly do if Charles is still alive when his mother dies is have a regency, but imo there is no chance Charles will give up his place willingly - he's been waiting his whole life for that job!

lavenderandthyme · 29/08/2019 22:33

I would like to see the Monarchy abolished. They are an anachronism.

lavenderandthyme · 29/08/2019 22:38

Prince Edward opened something or other interminably dreary yesterday and I thought to myself how incredibly ridiculous the whole notion of opening something is. It’s just so patronising.

noodlenosefraggle · 29/08/2019 22:51

There is no way to skip Charles. He has to predecease HM or abdicate. I doubt Wills would want to be King while his children are young. If you want to pick and choose your head of state, you can't have an hereditary monarchy.

noodlenosefraggle · 29/08/2019 22:53

Charles' divorce and being friends with Jimmy Savile has nothing to do with it. We've had worse.

Whoops75 · 29/08/2019 23:00

I think they should skip Charles to have any chance at a lasting monarchy.

He’s the last of the ‘do as I say not as I do’ generation. William & Kate could/would work harder than Charles and Camilla.

Barbarara · 29/08/2019 23:09

Can you actually get rid of the monarchy though? Give it a few years and a recession or some kind of general disillusionment and there will be people rallying around the true heir, and plotting to overthrow the govt and going to war about it. As long as the line exists there will be conflict.
So either you kill them off, which isn’t an option, or you render them harmless by making them pointless, figure heads and pay them enough to keep them from seizing actual power.

Ihatesundays · 29/08/2019 23:15

I literally dread the day we have a new King Charles...I’m sure the queen is hanging on with every will in her body to put it off as long as possible...

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 23:23

I think they should skip Charles to have any chance at a lasting monarchy

That is not possible where the principle of hereditary monarchy is adhered to.

By the time Prince William is crowned his children will be heading towards middle-age.

Highly unlikely. Prince Charles would be 82 when Prince George turns 18. It's perfectly possible that Prince William will be king before George is an adult, let alone middle-aged.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 23:36

@NewName54321

If Prince Charles lives till the age of 95, Prince George will be 31.

God I hope so

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 23:40

And if PC lives until he's 100, PW will be 65 and PG will be 36.

Considering the country can’t agree on Brexit, I dread to think what it would be like to change our constitutional head & decide what to do with the Royals.

lyralalala · 29/08/2019 23:52

I can't imagine the country ever being vocal enough to spark a change.

Look at the apathy over Brexit in terms of actual protests. From both sides. There's been no marches of several million people. There's been no strikes or riots. Even over BJ's latest move the most fired up people seem to be is another couple of petitions and perhaps one protest may be afoot.

I don't think the monarchy will survive long term because people actually love them, but I think they'll survive because folks that actively don't like them will rise a petition or have a moan rather than anything more than that.

Freddiefox · 30/08/2019 00:06

William & Kate could/would work harder than Charles and Camilla.

Why would you think that? Their track record is hardly one of workaholics. They currently do the bare minimum. I can’t see that changing

travellerexpat · 30/08/2019 04:19

There will probably be a monarchy, but I suspect it will have the status of one of the small European monarchies, like the Scandinavians.
As soon as theQueen dies, Australia and New Zealand and possibly Canada will probably be looking for independence.
After Brexit, there will probably only be (little) England left.

Tbh, I think William would be quite happy being a helicopter pilot and Kate could run her mum’s company. They’d still have their titles and be rich. I think they’d be miles happier.

kmc1111 · 30/08/2019 06:14

William & Kate could/would work harder than Charles and Camilla.

Charles and Camilla run rings around William and Kate. Before he retired even Philip was doing more than William and Kate combined, and he was 96 and in poor health.

William is extremely work shy and half asses what little work he deigns to do. People used to make excuses and say he’d grow into his role, but he’s nearing middle age now and if anything he’s just getting lazier and even worse at the job. His workload is pathetic compared to the older royals today, and a complete joke compared to what those older royals were doing at his age.

sashh · 30/08/2019 06:50

I hope it’s Anyfucker

Exactly what I thought, would be fab, as would Bertrand.

Why the palace felt the need to say “she won’t be a princess” instead of “she’ll never be Princess Catherine, but she will be HRH Princess William” I have no idea

Justincase it goes tits up, they don't want another, "Princess Diana",who was never actually Princess Diana, you can only be a princess if you are born one, she was, 'HRH Diana, the Princess of Wales' amongst other titles, she was allowed to keep the POW title but not the HRH when she divorced.

Obviously this didn't stop the press and public calling her Princess Diana.

If Wills and Kate split they won't have a 'Princess Catherine' running around causing trouble.

lavenderandthyme · 30/08/2019 07:40

I really think William loathes his role. He was much happier being a helicopter pilot. Who can blame him really. He and Kate would be much happier being private citizens.
It’s a life sentence being born Royal. All the money and privilege is not worth it.
