To think Prince Charles will be our last Monarch

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 09:49

Given that it could be another thirty years before Prince Charles dies, I was wondering if he will be our last Monarch.

I think that a lot will have changed by the time Prince William is due to accede the throne and that the Monarchy will have been abolished by then.

@LenoVintura
You’re right. My adult kids have no idea who they are either. Neither do they Care. The RF will be an irrelevance in twenty years.

XXcstatic · 30/08/2019 07:52

The RF should go for their own sake. Being royal brings privilege but ruins them. Charles has spent his entire life in suspended animation, waiting around to be monarch. He was unable to marry the woman he loved and ruined another woman's life as a result. Diana was consumed and destroyed by her fame and the media. William and Harry are openly resentful of their celebrity but don't seem to understand that it is the price of their immense privilege. In time, the same will happen to their children. It's sad and archaic.

Imagine only ever being able to get a promotion due to the death of a relative- that’s what it amounts to at the end of the day.

He was much happier being a helicopter pilot. Who can blame him really. He and Kate would be much happier being private citizens.
This is because he didn't do it full time and didn't have to do it in order to pay the bills. I don't doubt they would love to be members of the aristocracy, but the question is can we have an aristocracy without a Royal Family? I don't know why they stay if they don't want to.

noodlenosefraggle · 30/08/2019 08:37

When George was born I said to DH I didn't think he'd be King. The Australian referendum was almost cometely split down the middle by age. I think another referendum in Australia and Canada will result in a republic, and then they will fizzle out here, being largely ceremonial if they exist at all. Ioathe the Kardashians, but they have taken their limited assets and fed demand for what they sell. We live in that world. The monarchy has nothing to sell apart from as some kind of living Madame Tussauds. They can do that with a very slimmed down ceremonial monarchy.

BertrandRussell · 30/08/2019 08:37

“He was much happier being a helicopter pilot. Who can blame him really. He and Kate would be much happier being private citizens.”
What makes you think that?

Ihatesundays · 30/08/2019 08:54

The won’t leave the monarchy, they have all seen what happened to King Edward.

Mumofone1860 · 30/08/2019 08:57

I think Charles should abdicate to William to keep the monarchy going. No one likes him so will begrudge him whereas Kate and William are more relatable and lovable!

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 30/08/2019 08:58

Charles will not abdicate. He’s been waiting his whole life for this job.

HMArsey · 30/08/2019 09:04

Relatable how? I don’t know anyone who is so wealthy they don’t need to work.

LaurieMarlow · 30/08/2019 09:05

The entire point of a monarchy is that you cant just skip the ones you don’t like.

Charles would never abdicate. None of them would. They know what happened the last time.

I’m not sure what will happen, but I predict that public support for the monarchy will diminish significantly during Charles reign.

Without staging a revolution, I wonder how we’d get rid of them?

BertrandRussell · 30/08/2019 09:07

“Kate and William are more relatable and lovable!”

Really? Not to me they aren’t!

LaurieMarlow · 30/08/2019 09:08

whereas Kate and William are more relatable and lovable!

Well the Kool Aid worked on you.

I like Kate. But I’m starting to strongly dislike Wills. He seems to resent his duties, comes across as contemptuous of the public and press, has no respect for his wife. Privileged arse.

Jemima232 · 30/08/2019 09:51

Maybe some PP mean that Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are more relatable than Prince Charles because they at least went to school?

And PC has less public sympathy than his sons in any case.

The Diana debacle will mean that many, many people despise PC and are consequently fonder of PW.

Um, Prince Charles went to school.

travellerexpat · 30/08/2019 09:53

I think both William and Harry have used up all residual goodwill they had as children of Diana. She is a distant memory now.
William seems entitled and manipulative, especially in the light of his alleged affair.
Harry’s wokeness and faux humanitarianism are nauseating?
The only ones I like are Kate and her kids and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

BertrandRussell · 30/08/2019 09:57

Charles went to school.

BertrandRussell · 30/08/2019 09:59

Why is Harry’ humanitarianism any more faux than any of the others?

Jemima232 · 30/08/2019 10:06

Sorry - of course PC went to school.

Eh? They appear to be very happy. Unless you believe the tabloid rubbish of course.

diddl · 30/08/2019 10:21

I don't think that any of them have much idea of "real life".

Even Zara, who is lauded as "down to earth", has lived a life of privilege that is unimaginable to most of us.

Pamplemousecat · 30/08/2019 10:22

Practically speaking how would this work? The Tories are supporters of the establishment so wouldn’t have this on their manifesto. It would probably be a labour agenda item for their manifesto. But surely the monarchy are above law and anything that gets passed through commons has to be signed off by Monarch to make it law? Maybe I’m wrong

HMArsey · 30/08/2019 10:39

Can someone oblige me with quick explanation of why abdication would be so bad?

LaurieMarlow · 30/08/2019 10:51

Unless you believe the tabloid rubbish of course.

I’m inclined to believe the rumours, yes.
