To think Prince Charles will be our last Monarch

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 09:49

Given that it could be another thirty years before Prince Charles dies, I was wondering if he will be our last Monarch.

I think that a lot will have changed by the time Prince William is due to accede the throne and that the Monarchy will have been abolished by then.

The way things are going I think the Queen may be our last Monarch.

herculepoirot2 · 29/08/2019 15:22

I thought there was a rumour a while back that Kate was a Mumsnetter. Funny if true.

Who is the most likely MN to be Kate? I am going to throw my own hat in the ring. 🎩

Span1elsRock · 29/08/2019 15:24

I don't think Prince Charles looks well a lot of the time - he has very red skin, cracked swollen hands and I wonder if he has rheumatoid arthritis or something similar (my Dad is the same). The drug treatments for this can be brutal.

I wouldn't be surprised if HM outlives him and I've often wondered if his health is the reason why she has never abdicated her role.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 15:32

I think she hasn't abdicated because the abdication in 1936 was the reason her father became King and it was a very serious constitutional crisis.

She and her mother believed that becoming King caused the early death of George VI.

He actually died of lung cancer as he smoked like a chimney but there is a huge emotional link to the 1936 abdication for the Queen.

She has not abdicated because that is not what monarchs do.

Most likely MNetter to be Kate

Ha.

I think she reads it but doesn't post.

Hi Kate!

I'm pretty sure it's not me

My hair is not particularly thick; my OH is more bald than PW (though, imo, a tad more clever); and my children are obviously the most beautiful creatures on earth and could never be described as "plain". So, I guess it's you @herculepoirot2*.

Oops, sorry! I mean "your royal highness" Blush and Smile

*Along with the children of everyone else.

I think after yesterday’s debacle the monarchy may well be over. The monarch should act as a check on an erratic government IMO & that hasn’t happened.

The Queen should not “have abandoned her holiday at Balmoral”. She was looking after her bereaved grandsons. Appearing in London at the hounding of the press was IMO disgraceful.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 15:50

Agreed.

Her face said it all when she did finally show up.

TiredOldTable · 29/08/2019 15:58

Oddly I thought the same yesterday. The whole Boris suspending parliament and the queen being asked for permission which she has to give shows how pointless the monarchy is.

Scottish devolution within 10 years and Welsh within 20. Re-unification of Ireland in the EU.

There will be no United Kingdom

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 15:59

Do you know what, @TiredOldTable - I wouldn't be surprised if you were right on the money.

Are the young royals that popular? Kate is deemed workshy, or at least was until
Big Bad Megs came along. Now that William has lost his looks and his hair he looks like what he is, petulant and dull. It also seems he’s been shagging around, so he is conforming to type. The children all have the Queen’s face, I can’t see a picture of them without thinking of the immense privilege they will have through accident of birth.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/08/2019 16:12

We can only hope, OP - though I'm not so sure about Charles lasting another 30 years. Frankly I'll be amazed if he makes 80

I hope it’s Anyfucker

Saying all the things she couldn’t possibly say when in duchess role

FrancesFryer · 29/08/2019 16:14

Personally i don't think there's a chance of the monarchy going.
Even Australia voted against becoming a republic and they're on the other side of the world. No chance in the UK

lyralalala · 29/08/2019 16:15

Agreed.

I think the people who ranted and raved about “their Queen abandoning them” should feel utterly ashamed.

I do think instead of coming back when she did they should have released a statement a few days before basically telling people she was being a Grandmother and she’d be back in time for the funeral.

People go on and on about the poor boys when they basically demanded said boys appear in public. Seeing their bewilderment as they looked at the flowers and people sobbing for their mother was just so cruel.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/08/2019 16:18

there is a huge emotional link to the 1936 abdication for the Queen

I don't doubt it for an instant; the experience of seeing her deeply inadequate father traumatised by his fate will certainly have stamped abdication as "a bad thing"

And that's without the issue of what she'll be inflicting on us when she goes ...

LaMarschallin · 29/08/2019 16:21

People go on and on about the poor boys when they basically demanded said boys appear in public.

Absolutely right. As was all of that post.

The emotional incontinence displayed by many of the public was inappropriate and didn't show any real or deep feelings for the "poor boys" at all.

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2019 16:30

Yes- it was a time that showed the great British public at its absolute worst.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/08/2019 16:45

They will be quite happy to retire gracefully

I wouldn't bet on it, you know; this might be the narrative while the monarch enjoys 70% support, but if that changes after the Queen's death they'll probably fight like alley cats for their privilege

I agree about the difference social media's made, though; for all the cutesy pictures of HM sending her first tweet, they no doubt wish the whole thing could be un-invented

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 17:06

Interesting how times have changed in only eighty years.

Nobody would care a flying fuck if an unmarried King decided to marry a divorced woman nowadays.

I think Her Maj was seriously worried when PC wanted to marry Camilla. I think she was horrified by the notion of the heir to the throne's getting

a) divorced in the first place

and

b) married to the woman with whom he committed adultery.

I do truly believe that she thought the Monarchy would be brought into great disrepute by this.

Thinking about it - it has.

Pinkblueberry · 29/08/2019 17:12

People like William so I don’t think so. If the next in line was someone not so likeable then I think you’d be right.

herculepoirot2 · 29/08/2019 17:15

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 17:21

@Pinkblueberry - are you Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge?

OP posts:
herculepoirot2 · 29/08/2019 17:24

No, I am! I already said. Jeez, Louise. 🙄

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 17:26

Don't lie, Hercule.

It is I, actually.

Me, myself.

I started this thread in order to find out if I would one day be Queen.

It seems that I shall.
