AIBU to think dogs should be banned from parks?

They're everywhere, crapping, barking, smelling one another's arses and fighting. Then there are those jumpy ones trying to get a lick of a child's face before bounding off to piss up the nearest tree. Not everyone likes dogs and they spoil the park for kids. I'd love to see them allocated their own area away from the rest of the park where like minded dog owners can all hangout together picking up their pet's turds and convincing each other that "he's usually so gentle". AIBU??

I've written about this before on here but my enjoyment of parks has been ruined by dogs. I've lot count of the number of times I've been laying on the floor/sunbathing and a dog has literally jumped on my body/on my face or run all over my clothes and stuff. I'm allergic to dogs, so if a dog does that I have to go home and shower, and I have to wash all of my clothes or any possessions the dog has touched. I've asked really politely for people not to let their dogs do that, but it falls on deaf ears.

Apart from that, I also hurt my neck by jumping up suddenly from that position. I was laying on the grass with my eyes shut, and a dog jumped onto my face. I just want to be left alone and not accosted by animals. Being able to sit outside in the parks is one of the greatest pleasures I have because I have difficulty walking and I don't want that taken from me. It's so important to me and this summer it really has been badly affected. I used to have nothing against dogs but now, yes, I want them banned from parks because I'm absolutely sick of it. If another human did that to me they'd be in deep shit but somehow it's OK because it's a dog.

Dogs are just dogs

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,”
or “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.”

They don’t understand the distance travelled, the time spent,
or the costs involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.”

Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,”
but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by
“just a dog,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch
of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,” then you probably understand
phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”

“Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship,
trust, and pure unbridled joy.

“Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience
that make me a better person.

Because of “just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look
longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog”
but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts
away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that its’ not “just a dog”
but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being
“just a man” or “just a woman.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog,”
just smile, because they “just don’t understand.”

Saw Noel Fitzpatrick the Supervet read this last night and your comment reminded me of it.

I hate this human level of arrogance that assumes the world should be catered to us. We share this earth with other animals - get over it.

QualCheckBot · 27/08/2019 17:02

I've just never felt the same about dogs since being bitten. It was a bad bite, which required hospital treatment, stitches and antibiotics, and it was caused by a dog being walked off the lead which crept up behind me, without me even noticing it was there, and bit me. There were two dogs in fact. I'm particularly wary of dogs acting as packs now.

To see what those teeth did is horrible.

kenandbarbie · 27/08/2019 17:06

Yabu parks are mainly for walking dogs.

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 17:07

I find to very weird how arrogant humans are to assume that just because we are supposedly more intelligent than other animals that we are the superior and more deserving species - we're animals too, we are just an animal called a human.

Apply this logic to those within your own species and it becomes awfully disabelist - you have more of a right to life/are more important than others because you are more... Capable? Rational? What is it that makes "humans" more important than other animals exactly? People will say "because they are human!" but that really isn't an answer is it, what is it about humans that makes you think we are so special?

Same message as AngelSins, sorry I didn't see your post until after I'd finished mine.

There's a bizarrely high number of people on this thread who seem to actively dislike children
Just people who don't think the world revolves around their offspring.
I don't believe other people should have perfectly reasonable park activities curved because some people think their child should be able to run around wherever and they should never encounter so much as an inconvenience.

By all means, people can have as many issues as they like with irresponsible dog owners. As a dog owner who walks off lead appropriately, I also hate irresponsible dog owners.
What I don't do, which some on this thread do, is decide all dogs should be banned from parks/dogs should only be allowed off in a tiny fenced area / dogs should never be off lead etc just because a minority of dog owners are irresponsible.

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 17:11

I like my children, not so much other people's.

ErinO · 27/08/2019 17:12

My little sister is horrendously allergic to dogs. Her face swells beyond recognition when a dog licks her. I don't agree they should be banned from parks, but the should be kept on leads unless in a 'dog area'

Fuma · 27/08/2019 17:12

LOL this isn't about other species naturally co existing alongside us but rather some members of our own species keeping pets and the problems this causes both for us and the natural world.

Aprillygirl · 27/08/2019 17:21

You obviously hate dogs so you are unreasonably lumping them all together as untrained, noisy and vicious. How would you feel if dog lovers wanted to ban your kid/s from parks because some children are loud, screaming brats who think it's their right to chase and manhandle your dog without permission? Dogs are already (quite rightly) banned from the play area of parks and beaches in the summer season, so where exactly do you think owners should walk them?

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 17:29

Dogs are domesticated, what do you want to do to stop them being pets, put them all to sleep? Release them to the wild? Hmm and saying children have more right to be in the park than a puppy is saying human children are more important than non-human babies, supposedly just by virtue of being... Human.

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 17:31

Some people don't want you to walk them at all, they just want them to cease to exist.

Fuma · 27/08/2019 17:31

Oh and re questions about controlling where dogs shit upthread, I have a friend who trains assistance dogs and part of this involves teaching them to shit in one place only - not on the street, not in the park, not in national trust properties. The difference between them and pets is that the vast majority of owners can't be arsed to do it.

MyFartWillGoOn · 27/08/2019 17:33

Some dog owners do need better policing, especially picking up poop-but so do some parents 🤷🏻‍♀️

I walk my dog in a local park and the summer months brings the crowds. Without fail every morning we go through the woods and he brings me some horror-used nappies, sanitary towels and soiled child's pants. And there are free toilets in the park-no excuse!

But I totally agree owners need to pick up after their pooches and if they are off lead, be able to call them back instantly...

MyFartWillGoOn · 27/08/2019 17:35

@MarshallMathers Couldn't have said it better myself

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 17:38

Some kids need to be sent to training classes.

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 17:38

Agreed

Jesse70 · 27/08/2019 17:41

Yeah it's not the dogs fault. I don't like dogs in the playground but I understand some people have to take them in if they have kids also so as long as they are kept on their lead and picked up after they don't bother me
I have witnessed at all my local parks dogs pooing and it being ignored I also said to a lady her dog had just had a poop and she just put her head down and shrugged her shoulders
But I just admit the amount of rubbish left lying in parks really fucks me off and that's defo not the dogs lol
And why put poop in a bag but leave the bag on the grass????? Anyone???

Aprillygirl · 27/08/2019 17:44

Some people don't want you to walk them at all, they just want them to cease to exist.

Well thank God dogs aren't as hateful as some humans is all I can say.

Fuma · 27/08/2019 17:45

@gottaprettypup in 1976 there were around five million dogs in the UK, now there are nine million. In 1976 dog ownership was largely confined to the non urban population; now there are many dogs in urban environments. This change in both raw ownership figures and also of concentration within densely populated areas imo raises questions as to how to manage pet ownership in terms of impact on others including citizens' access to scarce green areas in cities etc. A pp pointed out that the phenomenon of having a small fenced off area for urban children surrounded by a larger green area for pet owners seems to be the wrong way around in terms of prioritisation and access to space. I agree with that. We need to start having conversations about the impact that pet owners have on both human and wild environments and how we can manage this.

Heratnumber7 · 27/08/2019 17:47

AIBU to think dogs should be banned from parks?

Not in the slightest. I bloody hate dogs. Dogs in parks ruin a nice walk for me.

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 17:47

Why? Please don't say "because they are human" without stating which qualities make humans more important.
