To think it’s hypocritical to shun Seaworld but not Disney?

Mascarponeandwine · 25/08/2019 22:45

I have a friend who is going to Florida for her next holiday. I mentioned that we’d been to Seaworld many years ago, just in conversation, and she said they wouldn’t go there as they don’t agree with animals captive in tanks. So they’re going to Disney instead.

I pointed out that Epcot, a Disney Park, has a tank of dolphins, a dolphin show and a dolphin encounter for $$$$. Allegedly this is “not the same” Confused

So Aibu to think that it’s hypocritical to virtue signal by boycotting Seaworld because of animal welfare concerns, but quite happily give your money to Disney with their tank of dolphins?

Are you sure you mean Epcot?
When I went last year, they only had a couple of manatees.

PinkyPrincessy · 25/08/2019 22:53

Epcot doesn’t have these things?

SleepyKat · 25/08/2019 22:54

I dunno, is Epcot a separate park from Disney land/world? Because if it is then even if it’s the same company owning both I’d go to one and not the other. Because if nobody walked through the gates of Epcot no matter how many people went to Disney they’d soon shut Epcot down.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 25/08/2019 22:57

The Seaworld boycott is very well known but I've never heard of Disney doing this. Off to look it up now...

Itspouringdown · 25/08/2019 23:02

Disney doesn’t have any of this / do this stuff.
They have manatees at Epcot in the Living Seas (?) pavilion. But not ‘performing’ shows.
.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 23:04

Epcot doesnt do shows, dont have dolphins as far as i know

Having said that they do have animal kingdom

Hmmmbop · 25/08/2019 23:05

They do have these:

disneyworld.disney.go.com/en_GB/events-tours/epcot/dolphins-in-depth/

But this thread is showing how it isn't publicised very well and isn't well known about. And most importantly, which I think is the crucial factor, it isn't the reason people go. Unlike Seaworld.

So no, I don't think it's hypocritical.

Mascarponeandwine · 25/08/2019 23:05

It’s called dolphins in depth and is on the main disneyworld website.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 23:07

Absolutely hmm

Where the fuck are the dolphins...you’d have thought they'd be fairly easy to spot

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 23:10

I dont think they have a dolphin show

Not that makes a difference to be fair

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 23:10

Plus i was soooooo wrong about the dolphins

Funghi · 25/08/2019 23:13

When I went last year, they only had a couple of manatees.

Oh that’s ok then Hmm

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 23:17

Yes funghi cos that’s EXACTLY what that poster was saying

Her entire post was about how it was a ok to keep manatees in captivity

Same as mine...mine was exactly the same. I wasn’t querying the whole dolphins show bit.... i i was absolutely saying

Yay manatees in captivity...awesome!!!

Hmmmbop · 25/08/2019 23:19

The epcot dolphin and manatee tanks are much larger and deeper than the seaworld tanks, and are actually a marine biology research lab, researching coral regeneration, the manatees are part of that.

I'm not saying it's right, but it is a fuck tonne better than seaworld.

Ponoka7 · 25/08/2019 23:23

Are you trying to make yourself feel better about supporting cruelty, via this thread?

She's doing her best to make ethical choices. She isn't visiting the dolphins, they aren't the basis for the park's attraction.

There is a petition on Change. Org, "free the Disney Dolphins", at least this thread will highlight that.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 23:25

Thanks ponoka

I’ve signed that

awsomeDean · 25/08/2019 23:25

The sea world boycot started around the killer whales, the numberous instances of the whales attacking 'trainers' and the black fish film.

Disney have a completely different programme and setup.
Generally people don't go to Disney for the animals.

The manatees are rescues who couldn't live in the wild.

There are no 'shows' with the dolphins at Disney.

PickettBowtruckles · 25/08/2019 23:26

I’ve been to Disney 5 times and never knew Epcot had dolphins. They certainly don’t have a dolphin show (unless it’s a secret one!) or at least they didn’t the last time we went (2017). Very different to the 3 times a day shows sea world has.

Quartz2208 · 25/08/2019 23:31

Epcot dolphins at least were in the living seas (now Nemo and friends) in a large aquarium area you can see on the second level by the manatees. Whilst not a show they certainly used to have a trainer come out and talk about them and sometimes they would do,tricks not seen it recently though

SleepyKat · 25/08/2019 23:32

Sounds like you only get to to see the dolphins if you pay to swim with them. So if you’re not paying to swim with them then you’re not supporting it.

Ihatesundays · 26/08/2019 09:13

I’ve never seen a dolphin there.

Quartz2208 · 26/08/2019 09:38

they were doing dolphin shows back in 2015

and read this

Quartz2208 · 26/08/2019 09:39

www.dolphinproject.com/blog/disneys-dismal-dolphins-no-make-believe-here/

so to be fair to the OP it is a difficult line to draw between Sea World and Disney

GreekOddess · 26/08/2019 09:52

I didn't know about the dolphins and manatees at Epcot either and we went there last year. We chose not to do Seaworld for both ethical and boredom reasons.

I didn't make a big song and dance about not going to Seaworld. When I was planning our Florida trip I was on a lot of Florida forums where you can get banned for making any criticism of Seaworld at all.

Seaworld supposedly has some decent rides but so do the other parks. People share their videos of Seaworld saying how emotional and overcome they were at the Whale performances. I've seen whales in the wild I would be bored stiff watching them perform for an audience.

Tink88 · 26/08/2019 09:59

Yes Epcot does have dolphins there are other animals in the seas pavillion also. And don't forget animal kingdom
