...to think about getting a piece of breastmilk jewellery?!

I can't work out if I think it's a bit gross or lovely!

Basically, from what I gather, you send off a little of your milk and it gets made into a kind of powder/resin and you can have it set as a ring or pendant, etc. Visually it looks quite nice, from what I've seen, and given breastfeeding has been a difficult but ultimately v rewarding journey for us, I kind of like the idea of something to commemorate it when we're done (which hopefully is a while off yet).

But am I mad? Has anyone had breastmilk jewellery made? Do I need to give my head a wobble?

No marketing opportunity is too bonkers these days.

NoSauce · 26/08/2019 11:08

Who are the smugs? People that think it’s shit?

NoTheresa · 26/08/2019 11:09

Oh god, no. Just no.

Celebelly · 26/08/2019 11:12

This is the kind of thing I'd seen...

I knew this would provoke spirited debate! Is the 'why not get your poo/jizz/pee made into one' this thread's equivalent to 'You wouldn't shit in public, so why would you get your breasts out?' Wink

Enjoying the responses, though, even if a worrying amount seem to suggest I'm batshit.

I breastfed all mine and loved every minute bit I find this a bit gross though I couldn't really articulate why!

IamtheOA · 26/08/2019 11:16

What next? Pendants made of fanny juice?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

BettysLeftTentacle · 26/08/2019 11:18

We look back on the Victorians and think they were quite odd for having brooches made of the hair of their dead loved ones

There is literally nothing weird about this though. It makes perfect sense.

Queenioqueenio · 26/08/2019 11:18

Stunned at placenta pics!!!! I find the tooth necklaces grim.
I’m not into the jewellery aspect of this at all, it all seems a bit ‘show off-y’ to me.
I also don’t understand why would you need this? Is it as ‘evidence’? Surely your child is your evidence?

beetleaugust · 26/08/2019 11:19

I've told my kids if they make any of my ashes into jewellery I will haunt them so bad it will make poltergeist look like a Disney movie.
I do not want to be hung around any of my kids necks or fingers for eternity.
Stick me on a shelf or chuck me in the garden.

Lockheart · 26/08/2019 11:26

I can't help but feel that given the relative complexity of storing / drying breastmilk and actually turning it into something that can be combined with resin / glass, the vast majority of women with "breastmilk jewellery" are wearing nothing more than a cloudy piece of costume jewellery with no actual milk involved.

I know next to nothing of glasswork but I used to work with resin quite a bit and I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to begin. You would definitely need to dry the breastmilk into a powder before you could use it or the resin wouldn't cure. I would imagine this isn't easy to do.

In short I'd be very very wary of handing any money over to anyone doing this via Facebook. Make sure you approach a professional with the right kit and know-how.

worriedaboutray · 26/08/2019 11:26

Why not get a set of charms?

Drop of conception jizz.
Drop of amniotic fluid.
Bit of placenta.
Drop of meconium.
Baby's first piss.
Breastmilk.
Various colours of vomit from each childhood illness.

Mamapop1 · 26/08/2019 11:34

My thought would be that if you don't do it while you still have your milk available then it would be a missed opportunity.

As long as it doesn't cost too much then does it matter if sits in a box in a drawer and gets put in the bin one day down the line.

MaidenMotherCrone · 26/08/2019 11:35

@PhilCornwall1 apologies so you did!

I see a gap in the market and obviously great minds etc. I don't think the start up costs would be too much...... we need a name obviously!

ElizaDee · 26/08/2019 11:55

@FloatingObject re commemorating pets, look at snozza. You can get their nose cast and they can also make a paw print charm.

I had my dogs nose cast and paw print taken by the vets after we had to pts and I've still got them ready to send off. It took me about a year to open it to get it ready and I'm going to send it off in the next few weeks.

I wish I'd done it earlier though.

CheeryB · 26/08/2019 11:56

I bf my children and it was hard work and painful, I don't need reminding of it. I've never heard of this before, I almost thought it was a joke at first. I find it bizarre.

Shplot · 26/08/2019 11:57

I wish I had done, recently found out I have ovarian failure and am infertile so I’ll never have another. I think it would be a lovely keepsake

PhilCornwall1 · 26/08/2019 12:05

@MaidenMotherCrone well unfortunately Love Honey is taken (so I've been told, I wouldn't know these things of course), so a perhaps Love Butter - I'll get my coat Confused

adaline · 26/08/2019 12:21

I don't get it - how do you know it's real and not a massive con?

Celebelly · 26/08/2019 12:27

I suppose you don't, really. There's an element of trust involved, although some show you images of the process step by step using your inclusions.

For those interested in the process, it seems to be basically mixing a small amount of milk with chemicals to preserve and then solidify it into a hard kind of resin. You can get kits to DIY it at home apparently too.

Perhaps I shall return to this thread in a few months time to delight disgust you with my new bling.

Also thanks @ElizaDee. Have made a note of that for when DDog goes (hopefully a long time away). Her nose is one of my favourite things about her and is constantly being booped, so a nose cast would be v fitting.

@worriedaboutray

I know you’re joking but I think you might be into something here....

adaline · 26/08/2019 12:32

I would imagine most of these people are just selling cheap costume jewellery and chucking your milk straight in the bin!

finn1020 · 26/08/2019 12:35

It’s a really odd thing to do but I’ve also heard of people that keep the placenta to (a) plant under a tree or (b) for a tasty Hmm fry up (don’t personally know anyone who HAS done option b though and really hope it’s an urban myth). Breastmilk jewellery isn’t quite on that same level of weirdness but if someone told me they’d had jewellery created from their own breastmilk I would also wonder if they were gardeners or vegetarians.

TheoneandObi · 26/08/2019 12:40

Sounds a bit precious to me. You asked!

Pretendapony · 26/08/2019 12:46

I think it’s really weird and one of those things that people will try and show off with. ‘Look at me and my breastmilk necklace, did I tell you it was made from my breastmilk?’
