...to think about getting a piece of breastmilk jewellery?!

I can't work out if I think it's a bit gross or lovely!

Basically, from what I gather, you send off a little of your milk and it gets made into a kind of powder/resin and you can have it set as a ring or pendant, etc. Visually it looks quite nice, from what I've seen, and given breastfeeding has been a difficult but ultimately v rewarding journey for us, I kind of like the idea of something to commemorate it when we're done (which hopefully is a while off yet).

But am I mad? Has anyone had breastmilk jewellery made? Do I need to give my head a wobble?

What next? Pendants made of fanny juice?
Wow trolls out in force Hmm

I think it’s a lovely idea. I’m sorry I didn’t know about it before I finished.

Schuyler · 25/08/2019 22:36

It’s not my thing but if it’s going to be a nice memonto for you, why not?

FloatingObject · 25/08/2019 22:36

Not-but-kind-of-related, I wish you could get some kind of jewellery that commemorates your pets. When they pass, imagine you could get a tooth or something cast in silver or gold

Celebelly · 25/08/2019 22:37

@FloatingObject You can get ashes or fur made in to jewellery!

It's a mundane bodily function that I wouldn't want or need a decorative memento of. Imagine future generations arguing over who has to take care of grandma's breast milk necklace Confused

FloatingObject · 25/08/2019 22:38

@Celebelly really?! Link??

comingintomyown · 25/08/2019 22:38

Good grief whatever next

Watchingthyme · 25/08/2019 22:39

It’s a gimmick.

Mixed responses so far. DP is horrified (but it's nothing to do with him anyway).

@FloatingObject Precious Paws do the fur mementoes and Ashes into Glass do ashes jewellery. I considered getting something with my dear old dog's fur. I still might, as I kept a lock of it.

The lady that does them is lovely. Her little boy has leukemia though (instagram) so I know she's taking a break every now and then and some me time, so orders do take a while.

They are stunning. I have two little pouches of milk still in my freezer I'm going to send in later this year if I can save up enough to get a ring or a bead made up.

I only managed to breastfeed for around four months and even then it was combi feeding as I was in/out of hospital (I was very, very poorly and almost died) so I want it as a momento of getting through that time. All I focussed on around then was trying to keep feeding DS and trying not to feel like a failure for being sick, even though rationally it wasn't my fault. It was my totem.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 25/08/2019 22:42

We look back on the Victorians and think they were quite odd for having brooches made of the hair of their dead loved ones, and I guarantee people in the future will think our obsession with honouring and commemorating completely routine events is equally as odd.*

I dunno, I kind of like the hair brooch thing 🤷🏼‍♀️. Actually, through history most humans have tried to commemorate things, through everything from art to scarification. It seems strange sometimes when something means so much to your mind, but doesn't physically show.

I might be a bit overly sceptical, but is there proof of the encapsulating? Can imagine this field is an easy one for dodgy dealers. Other than that though, I don't think it's mad!

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/08/2019 22:42

Do you mind saying who you used @Lookingsparkly and @Weevle84?

Celebelly · 25/08/2019 22:42

That's the thing: I'm not really sentimental, I hate sentimental memes and greetings cards and all that jazz. There's just something about this that appeals to me 🤔

It sounds like some cheesy Facebook business, the kind of thing I regularly see and think ‘who the fuck buys this shit’.

Then again if you think it’s lovely then up to you.

ParrotsForLife · 25/08/2019 22:43

I had a pendant made with ds’s First curl through Milk Diamonds and really rate her.
I think if you want it, get it. Breast feeding is something to be proud of. I couldn’t manage it with DS.

Sparklingbrook · 25/08/2019 22:44

I think buying yourself a piece of beautiful jewellery to reward yourself for getting through breastfeeding is a nice idea. Just don't really get why it has to actually have breastmilk in it.

Celebelly · 25/08/2019 22:44

@Andysbestadventure Ah bless you, sounds like you did amazing!! We had huge problems getting BF established, and I can't imagine what it would have been like if I'd been unwell and in and out of hospital. You should be proud for sure Thanks

I think it's a lovely idea. Wish I'd done it with my first but plan to do it with my next. Go for it

Andysbestadventure · 25/08/2019 22:45

You sound like a total fucking delight @LiveInAHidingPlace

Hmm
Lookingsparkly · 25/08/2019 22:46

@AnnelovesGillbert

Milk Diamonds

poolblack · 25/08/2019 22:46

I think it's weird. I don't really get the point.

YesQueen · 25/08/2019 22:46

@FloatingObject I am having this done shortly with my horses tail

teenagetantrums · 25/08/2019 22:48

I don't know sounds a bit odd to me. Mind you it's 20 odd years since l breastfed a child. I don't think it's anything worth commentating in Jewellery. It's a bodily function. But if it makes you happy and you can afford it why not.

Rainbowknickers · 25/08/2019 22:49

It’s the sort of thing I wish I’d done years ago when mine where little
It would be lovely to wear it and the memories (I have a short memory lol breastfeeding was hell)

My daughter wants her dogs ashes made into a tattoo (you can put them into the ink)
He’s only a puppy but it’s something she wants when the day comes and they have to say goodbye
THAT thought makes me gag to be honest
I told her to get a necklace made of his fur or something but she said that was too Victorian!

Weevle84 · 25/08/2019 22:50

@AnneLovesGilbert I used Precious by Kerry, you can find her on Facebook and she sends you pictures along the way showing your milk being dried etc
