Pigeons!!

The lady who lives downstairs has 6-8 birds in her flat at any given time. She's some sort of one-woman bird rescuer or something.

Fine. The flat stinks of bird shit, but once you put something over your nose when you walk up the stairs, you can cope.

Where I can't cope is the fucking bastard pigeons. She feeds them every morning [cry]
Consequently, there are constantly pigeons everywhere. I woke up this morning to bird shit literally on every pane of glass on my bedroom window.
I hung out the window, scrubbed it off, then vomited.
It's fucking disgusting.

Last week a guy came out to fix my plumbing and he was like 'there's so much pigeon shit, it's unhygienic'. That's a lot coming from a plumber!

Question. Is there any way the woman downstairs can be asked to stop feeding the fucking dirty flying rats and contaminating the entire block?

Amazon have fake hawks for around £20-£30. Maybe you could attach one by your window somehow?

Hohofortherobbers · 25/08/2019 20:14

I think pigeon shit is toxic isn't it? It's got a special name and council workers have to wear hazard gear to clean it, might help your case

Hohofortherobbers · 25/08/2019 20:17

Yep, just been googling, 'pigeon guano hazards' it's nasty shite

VibrantElk54227 · 25/08/2019 20:41

I love Pigeons.I believe that they are beautiful and wonderful. Also, idiots like you may not know that they do not have a ton of diseases and that Pigeons and rats are not the same.

Please be more considerate towards them and their admirers/owners.

Sagradafamiliar · 25/08/2019 20:41

Urgh god what a nightmare. Fucking pigeons. Get pest control round before you and your neighbours end up getting Ecoli

Bowsy5 · 25/08/2019 20:47

Funnily enough, cleaning shite off my window makes me nauseous.....

I’m assuming OP isn’t licking the windows clean?

Although that might explain the vomiting I suppose!

HeckyPeck · 25/08/2019 20:49

Invest in anti pigeon measures and you won’t have to Smile

Bowsy5 · 25/08/2019 20:49

Whether that be bird shit, cat shit, dog shit, horse shit, cow shit, sheep shit or human shit, frankly it invokes the same nausea in me.
It's avoidable. If woman stopped fucking feeding the bastards they wouldn't be hanging around shitting everywhere!

OP posts:
Bowsy5 · 25/08/2019 20:51

And it's a fucking flock of them.

Ohflippineck · 25/08/2019 20:52

Neighbour’s behaviour isn’t reasonable in a block but OP and lots of others have an horrible attitude towards pigeons. Some people encourage their children to chase them, and then wonder why the world is becoming the horrible place it is.
Biggest, most dangerous vermin on this planet is the human kind.

HeckyPeck · 25/08/2019 20:53

It’s very unlikely that env health/the council will have to power to stop her feeding them (except if there are rats/mice being attracted) and they’ll probably recommend that you get anti-pigeon methods.

The fake owls/hawks are effective and not too expensive.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/08/2019 20:58

The trouble is though if she does continue to feed them there will be rats or mice , they'll be attracted to the loose food. Then the OP will have a bigger vermin worry .

I get really annoyed when children chase or even worse try to jump on or stamp on, pigeons . They only seem to run faster not fly .

Fancy bred racing pigeons are a world apart from street pigeons , just as Pet Rats are nothing like the wild ones .

Ohflippineck · 25/08/2019 21:03

I’ve watched the wild rats along the Thames, foraging in their natural habitat, fascinating. Seagulls are spectacular, on the cliffs or rocks fishing or picking at shellfish.

We cause the problem by leaving our waste lying around (or feeding them as in this case) then complain about “vermin” when they quite naturally adapt their behaviours to take advantage.

Bowsy5 · 25/08/2019 21:03

@VibrantElk54227
No, I'm not ignorant, and if you've anything to say to me (twice), say it on here.
Get a job cleaning pigeon shit up.

Don't fucking private message me to say it. Crazy.

Not really a helpful answer; but birds which are looked after correctly do not smell - so if it stinks as you walk by the flat there may be a need for RSPCA/ environmental health involvement ? Could she be hoarding birds ? It is quite common for people to do this.

With regard to the pigeons outside , if she could be encouraged to only feed them in the morning and further away , then that may help. Birds tend to need to eat mainly in morning and before nightfall ( obviously they will snack if given chance ). This may encourage the pigeons to A) clear up all the food given well before dark and not leave anything for rats and mice and B) look further afield for food in the late afternoon which should hopefully lead to roosting elsewhere and thereby eliminate at least a portion of the mess.

MrsHaversham · 25/08/2019 21:39

I feel your pain OP. A flock of pigeons are roosting in an empty building next to our back garden If it wasn't dark I'd take a picture of exactly how much shit these birds produce. It doesn't only speed up the decay and rot of buildings but it contains disease. I don't think many pro-pigeon posters on this thread would be happy with piles of bird shit building up around their homes. If it was you or your children would you still think it wasn't a problem?

justasking111 · 25/08/2019 21:46

How many flats in your block ? Surely the other residents are sick of it so you should work with them to resolve this problem. Strength in numbers.

HeckyPeck · 25/08/2019 22:06

I would just buy a fake owl/hawk.

Especially if it was making me actually be sick!

MrsHaversham · 25/08/2019 22:15

Fake owls don't work. We tried that. Pigeons aren't stupid, they worked out it wasn't real and started shitting on that too. We even tried moving it around. Same with water pistols. They just stand there. All other humane methods have been tried (I wouldn't actually harm the pigeons). Environmental health will clear the pigeons when breeding season is over, but because the building is empty and they can't trace the owner, the flying rats will just come back. In the mean time I have to keep my children out of the garden because of the constants layers of shit.

HeckyPeck · 25/08/2019 22:22

Have you tried the ones that are on long poles and zoom around like kites? They work much better than the statues.

I’d worry environmental health are palming you off because pigeons can breed all year round and they aren’t allowed to touch any nests with eggs or young in.

MrsHaversham · 25/08/2019 22:28

I didn't know about the constant breeding! Although it makes sense. I quite like the idea of a zoomy fake owl though! I may have to invest on one of those!!

Bowsy5 · 26/08/2019 00:50

I'm on the first floor. Bird woman is on ground floor. She sees the grounds as hers I suppose.
Other neighbours I don't know about.

OP posts:
plantwhisperer · 26/08/2019 01:05

@Bowsy5 she sounds absolutely mad and I would be pissed too I had to live with bird shit everywhere, it contains disease and YES, can actually make you sick! Poor you :(

I would talk to environmental health and also speak to the neighbour/any family she has if possible. Surely it's a safeguarding concern if she's disabled and potentially hoarding birds?
