To be bothered by this?

I know I am and I know this is going to come across as really judgemental Blush

I'm seeing someone new, only been a few weeks. We went to the cinema last night, had gallery tickets where the drinks, popcorn etc are included so realise he was probably just taking advantage of that.... but he ate 3 boxes of popcorn during the film. Is this a lot?

I was waiting to have a bit of a cuddle watching the film but couldn't because it was non-stop eating all the way through.

I don't even really know what I was bothered about, he's overweight and that doesn't bother me at all. I find him really attractive but it just seems mindless and greedy to eat that much during a 2 hour film.

AIBU to feel a bit put off by it? disclaimer I already know I am

Fair enough I’ll accept I’m being unreasonable on the cuddle front, from now on all cinema trips will be a cuddle free affair Grin don’t think I’ll get a look of if there’s popcorn on offer anyway Wink

This is another one where the PPs seem to have missed the point.

He was more concerned with troughing popcorn than with cuddling OP. And it's only a few weeks in.

It's about that, not the eating or the weight.

I wouldn't want to come second to food, so I'd be passing on this relationship.

ChristmasFluff · 24/08/2019 18:30

OP, you are not being unreasonable, and I feel sorry for all those PPs who do not understand the joy of the cinema 'cuddle'. :-D x

MrsGrindah · 24/08/2019 18:34

Bleugh!

BuildBuildings · 24/08/2019 18:36

Jesus sometimes you just want to pig out. Mumsnetters can be so uptight sometimes. However you find attractive or not what you do so it's either a deal breaker or not. Nut trying to change him is a no.

FazakerlyJackie · 24/08/2019 18:53

More Butterkist than kissed eh?

I'd give him the elbow....or a hands free nosebag.

IWantAPetElephant · 24/08/2019 19:32

@BuildBuildings I’m not trying to change him, I’ve already said I know I’m being unreasonable to be bothered by it.

I don’t even think it was the amount that bothered me, it was that it was literally non stop eating for 2 hours. If he’d had a box then decided to go back later for another I don’t think it would have even registered with me but it wasn’t like that. He took in 2 and asked me to get him 1 (I don’t like popcorn Grin) so i was a bit taken aback that someone would pre plan almost to eat that much, seems a bit different to getting carried away eating too much watching a film.

Totally understand I’m reading far too much into this though. Just wondered if anyone else would feel the same.

Greeeeeeedy!
Btw nothing unreasonable about maybe wanting a hand hold or something at the cinema, don’t apologise you’re not high maintenance.
Been married coming up 17 years and we still hold hands in the cinema

RandomMess · 24/08/2019 19:37

I asked DH what he would think, "ignored". It's ok for you to decide it's a deal breaker!

OrangeFluff · 24/08/2019 20:05

I wouldn't like it either OP, seems incredibly greedy to eat that much. Plus I'd want a cuddle too. Thats why my boyfriend and I only ever go to the Everyman Cinema- perfect cuddle situation Grin

Confusedandworried321 · 24/08/2019 20:08

My DH will eat 4 or 5 popcorns at the gallery! He isn't overweight, quite the opposite actually, and we stick to a healthy lifestyle most of the time so it's him indulging. I do think it's ridiculously excessive though!!!

Not sure it would put me off. Depends how loud your date was crunching the popcorn!

IWantAPetElephant · 24/08/2019 20:54

I know @OrangeFluff I love having a cuddle at the cinema too.

And to be fair when we were booking tickets he said to sit up in the gallery because the seats would be together so we could have a cuddle, now I know it was just a ruse to get more popcorn so I feel like I was a less important part of the deal Wink

Off topic but I went on a cinema date a few months ago (we were both late 20s/early 30s) and he wanted to sit and snog until the film was on. I obliged but commented it felt like I was a teenager again. Bless him he told me he didn't get his first gf until his mid 20s so missed all that teenage silliness Blush

ViserionTheDragon · 24/08/2019 21:05

Sorry, but that sounds greedy AF! That would bother me too, especially if he really does get through a box before the film starts Shock.

nelliethelesbian · 24/08/2019 21:07

Wtf, no way!! I love a cuddle at the cinema op you are not being unreasonable there.

As for the eating, was he nervous? That would be my number one reason for trowelling down the popcorn like it was going out of fashion!

GooodMythicalMorning · 24/08/2019 21:19

Dh and cuddle at the cinema (normal seats) and have done for 13.5 years! Ive never heard of being able to have free popcorn but we usually have a large each but almost compete to have them finished before the film starts. Occasionally I'll swap to nachos but they're messier.

IWantAPetElephant · 24/08/2019 21:29

@nelliethelesbian I don’t think it was because he was nervous. He said about usually eating more when he goes with friends so it didn’t sound like it was a one off but that he’d usually go through 3 or boxes when he goes to the cinema.

IWantAPetElephant · 24/08/2019 21:29
  • 3 or more boxes

Bookworm4 · 24/08/2019 21:32

The constant eating noises would have made me want to strangle him. I think he was pretty rude, I’d give him a miss.

notacooldad · 24/08/2019 21:36

I don’t think I’ve ever in my life actually noticed how much anyone else has ever eaten at the cinema
I do! It really annoys me when people eat none stop through a film. Bloody sweet wrapper rustlers are the worst! Second is large never ending popcorn box sharers who pass the box up and down a few mates.

Why can't people stop stuffing their faces for an hour and half!
( kind of light hearted)
The weight of the guy woukdnt be an issue, eating during a movie would be!!

DerelictWreck · 24/08/2019 21:41

I'm more confused about these special 'gallery' seats where you get free popcorn?

crazycatgal · 24/08/2019 21:42

I'm sure people over exaggerate the noise of people at the cinema. I go quite often and I've only ever heard the odd rustle, no crunching or slurping.

I'm pretty sure DP would have got through 2 or 3 boxes as well. 😂

Greeborising · 24/08/2019 21:45

I think when you’re in the early days of dating we all make a bit of an effort, no?
Maybe his effort was only eating 3 boxes of popcorn 😳

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/08/2019 21:46

I'd be a bit grossed out. I tuck into the popcorn like a woman possessed but one box is enough. More than that is greedy and annoying to listen too

HeffaLump1 · 24/08/2019 21:49

Free popcorn at the cinema???!! Never heard of this! Ive been missing a trick obviously

But to the point of the thread....this would really put me off him. Constant chowing popcorn? No thanks. 3 boxes is pretty excessive
