To not want mismatched mugs?

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

The sort of guests who visit my home aren’t the sort who are bothered whether my mugs match
Neither are mine, but I care, I never shop in next but once I start of a coordinating a new colour, I search out matching pieces.
Same with cushions and bed clothes.

I didn't realise white mugs were 'classic', you live and learn.

ChaosInTheMugCupboard · 24/08/2019 09:42

YABVU to prefer matching mugs, OP. A mug collection is like an art collection - you add to it carefully, thoughtfully, each one should speak to you, you don't get a job lot of identical ones from IKEA. Unless you're being very post modern, I suppose Sad

I agree that foisting your taste on other people long term through the gifting of household objects is a high-risk present strategy. I would much rather receive something edible or potable. My house is cluttered enough with my own stuff, let alone other people adding to it.

A few weeks ago I was at a stately home where an antique porcelain dinner service was on display. Every item was beautifully hand painted with a different scene. I'm not sure if that counts as matchy or not.

Thanks for the new username, btw Grin

The eternal beau has taken me back to my very first house.
I had that collection and had virtually everything including the kitchen blind and tablecloth!
I wanted everything to match because as a child out house was a mismatch due to being poor 😢

Racingthorn · 24/08/2019 09:55

I thought I was being very adventurous when I decided to put M&S Harvest on my wedding list instead of Eternal Beau. It was unbreakable and I had to live with the stuff for years and years until I could afford to replace it with plain white china.

tigger1001 · 24/08/2019 10:00

Everyone's style is different. Personally, I don't think I have two mugs the same and none "match" but all have a story.

I love nothing more than a trip to an auction looking for pieces to upcycle so it's safe to say nothing matches in my house, that's just my style. Nothing wrong with either way.

I don't have an issue at being gifted mugs etc but wouldn't give mugs etc to someone who liked things to all match.

CassianAndor · 24/08/2019 10:06

Agree that plain white isn’t classic at all. It’s just a plain white, undecorated mug.

DH and I have our own mugs that we’ve chosen so there’s no chance he’ll use one of mine or vice versa.

Many of our mugs are souvenirs or gifts and those associations are lovely to be reminded of. I drink my morning tea out of a mug that was given to us as a wedding present by a good friend of his. Tea the rest of the day might be out of a mug given to me by by best friend who emigrated, or one given to me by my DSis, or one I bought in a museum near to where I once worked. All good memories.

sheshootssheimplores · 24/08/2019 10:09

Plus there’s nothing nicer than drinking tea from a mug that one of your kids bought for you ♥️

StCharlotte · 24/08/2019 10:12

Tea in a thicker “mug”.

ARE YOU MAD???

TheJoxter · 24/08/2019 10:15

I don’t think anything in my house matches anything else!

SpeedyShutter · 24/08/2019 10:22

If we have matching sets of mugs, you can guarantee that one will get smashed and we'll end up with a set of 3. Pointless. We just buy them as and when we need them or we take what we're given and now we have a cupboard full of random, odd, non-matching mugs and cups.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 24/08/2019 10:29

Mum refuses to drink from anything 'thick' so I have a mother mug tree of matching white china 'mugs' reserved for her.

Cupboard is full of mugs that make me laugh. Current favourite is a pink primark one with 'bring me coffee and I'll love you forever' on it. DSD gets that one a lot in the mornings.

Most people get a cupboard mug. If you're in trouble, or vaguely serious, you'll get a mummy mug.

ktjerl · 24/08/2019 10:39

I like my stuff to match. I have tea cups, mugs and latte cups but they are all clear glass. It's a little thing but it makes me feel happier to open the cupboard. I do get bought a lot of gift mugs a glasses but donate them in packaging as I don't have a place for them.

bilbodog · 24/08/2019 10:47

Very little matches in my house - this shows the type of crockery i have.

NiceWork · 24/08/2019 11:44

Also if you only have one of each type of mug, what happens if your DH uses your preferred one before you? It’s a lucky dip as to what you’ll be using for every brew. Absolute mayhem!!

OP, in the nicest possible way, are you easily discombobulated by choice or the mildly unexpected in all areas of your life, or just mugs?

megletthesecond · 24/08/2019 11:49

Yabu. Have you no soul?!
Matching mugs are for monsters.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 24/08/2019 12:02

I'd LTB

k1233 · 24/08/2019 12:20

To be honest cloudyyy someone had borrowed one and didn't return, so I was left with two. But the fact I got them as a set of three meant I couldn't even look at them! Apparently nice to drink out of, but the very sight of them sent me into a rage! One - good. Two - good. Three - meaningless.

SerenDippitty · 24/08/2019 12:40

The only matching mugs we have are two that used to be a set of tour end even they are different colours. The rest are a mixture of keepsakes from our late parents’ houses, bought as holiday souvenirs, gifts or bought just because we liked them.

LakieLady · 24/08/2019 13:07

Out of interest how do you feel about the fact I don’t put crockery or mugs in cupboards? I just have open shelves and they all go on there...

It wouldn't work for me. Our house is spider city. I like the spiders, and it would be awful to drown one in tea (and then swallow it - I'd be like the old lady in the song).

TheJoxter · 24/08/2019 13:09

LakieLady cupboards won’t stop a spider! And would you not notice one before you put anything in a mug? I always check mugs before using them

Waveysnail · 24/08/2019 13:10

No cant be having matching mugs. Everyone has their favourite. I have my favourite 4 (that fit nicely.in coffee maker)

LakieLady · 24/08/2019 13:16

@TheJoxter I've yet to find a spider, or even a cobweb, in my kitchen cupboards. They're far too fond of hanging around in corners where they can see what's going on imo. And I don't routinely look in mugs before I put the teabag or coffee in, either.

TheJoxter · 24/08/2019 13:19

LakieLady our cupboards are full on spiders. The kind of skinny spindly ones. Luckily never found one in a cup of tea though!

WombleishOfThigh · 24/08/2019 13:20

@bilbodog Oh, I love that unselfconscious eclectic style!
