To not want mismatched mugs?

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

It was a sad day the day DP put my Heartbeat mug in the dishwasher and half of Claude Greengrass's face peeled off Sad

None of our mugs match! What a boring world that would be.

bilbodog · 24/08/2019 13:29

I womble, thank you 💐

littlemissdynamite · 24/08/2019 13:32

@Cloudyyy Not gonna lie! the creme egg mug was shit to drink out of! Sad

Cute to look at though! Grin

Not sure which side of the fence I fall, or have I got splinters in my bottom for being exactly on the fence? My cups are Cornishware but spanning the lifetime of the company’s many incarnations. Different sizes, weights, thicknesses, shapes and influences. What I would refer to as same - same but different. A veritable variety of vessels !

RacheyCat · 24/08/2019 13:33

@bilbodog that's a lovely double-happinness vase.

Our mugs at home don't match as such, but they're all hand-made ceramics in a similar style. We pick them up when we see them for sale.

When we first moved to China (ten years ago), we were struck by how much 'cute' crockery was available, and bought a lot of quite kawaii-style stuff in our very first days here. But now, older, and less impressed by this sort of thing, we've replaced it all with stuff closer to our current tastes.

I do like a novelty mug too, but I use them at work. I just picked up a Jane Austen one and a Virginia Woolf one for myself, but I have a good selection of mismatched mugs in my office so I can offer hot drinks to people who visit.

RedCowboyBoots · 24/08/2019 13:37

If all of your mugs are the same, how do you tell whose is whose?

DH thinks you may have OCD.

Socksontheradiator · 24/08/2019 13:39

I never buy mugs for anybody, because most people have too many already. We have 5 in our house.

Shockers · 24/08/2019 13:44

I personally dislike matching things; I don’t like mugs with slogans though.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 24/08/2019 13:44

I have the same set of 6 mugs I bought about 30 years ago when I first got married. They are still used today but mainly when I have guests as I have my favourite cat mug one of my sons bought me.
I also have several different sets of plates and bowls used for different types of meals and one of the sets is older than me and given to me by my late mother in law. This is the set I use the most.
I don’t care if things match. I want something that is practical and most fitting for the task intended.

greenlavender · 24/08/2019 13:58

I buy mugs everywhere, I live them. I find matching mugs soulless. Same with cushions Smile

FarTooMuchWashing · 24/08/2019 14:03

DH and MIL would agree with you, so I understand you point.
But I don’t go along with it. I love our mismatching mugs. Most were gifts and have a story or memory attached to them. I just make sure DH gets one of the set he chose when I make a cuppa.

Kuponut · 24/08/2019 14:04

I have the Eternal Beau from MIL in one of the high up cupboards. Can't reach it - but the cups don't match anymore as I think they met a teenage DH and fell to their doom.

Nowt matches in our daily crockery. Often it DID match to start with - but with DH and then DD2 with dyspraxia and DD1 just generally being so busy telling you what she's doing she pays no attention to actually doing it - things long since mismatched. From my background in teaching I also have acquired various mugs as gifts and still remember the kids who gave me them too.

Strugglingtodomybest · 24/08/2019 14:04

I buy mugs as souvenirs of places I visit, because I like my souvenirs to be practical and I can have a reminisce whilst drinking my tea.

If I had been to someone's house and seen that they were a matchy matchy person, I wouldn't buy them a single mug, so I'm with you on that one OP, that is unthoughful.

toomuchtooold · 24/08/2019 14:30

If you have matching mugs and you drop one, do you just soldier on with the remaining three and only replace them once they're all broken? That's what would bother me. It's like dressing twins in the same outfits - all good until someone spills their dinner and you have to change them.

Liverpool52 · 24/08/2019 14:39

No mugs match in our house. We get "his and hers" mugs from my PIL for Christmas every single year. They never make it to New Year.

IncrediblySadToo · 24/08/2019 14:47

sicks - do you mean 5 mugs in total? How is 5 a lot if mugs? Don’t you have visitors??

I don’t like ‘Next’ style matching stuff. My Aunty, when she decorated a room goes out and buys (usually from next’ a bunch of things that match. I personally think it looks soulless and far too ‘matchy for me, but it makes her happy and it does look ‘nice’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I AM ‘very fussy’ so all my China matches (well it’s all white) and cushions ‘go’ they’re not identical but they’re all ‘of a tone’ But not bought together, just randomly when I see one I like.

Most of the bed linen is white & I have a few different throws, and a couple of comfy cushions (not a line of them or any faffy ones!

My kitchen is white/grey (I love it, no one else has to!) and as I said all the China/serving dishes etc are white but I’ve just bought (on holiday) a hand made cooking/serving pot that’s bright red and a couple of small gorgeous green bowls from the man that made them.

So I generally buy things that co ordinate, but aren’t ‘a set’ but sometimes I just buy something because I love it.

So I think there’s a ‘calm core’ with eclectic touches. Anyway I love it, so it really doesn’t matter to me what people on line think!

But I agree that buying people random stuff for their house, without consideration for their preference is weird/inconsiderate - but I stress a LOT about buying presents for people. I would NEVER buy someone something that was designed to be displayed

omafiet · 24/08/2019 14:54

This is a fascinating thread! I just went onto Etsy and bought a couple of the Creme Egg cups! 😄

omafiet · 24/08/2019 14:55

We have a stainless steel fridge so none of our magnets stick - so now I buy cups as souvenirs. All meaningful in some way.

HeronLanyon · 24/08/2019 15:00

Slogan cushions - omg! Naff !! Slogan anything frankly particularly random words on mantles/walls etc
Matching mugs - why ? I have ‘garden mugs’ (robust) favourite coffee mugs, meaningful mugs from travel etc mugs and bowls for me need to be various and meaningful. Not matching at all.
Plates - for some reason these are mostly matching. It all though. Have some I use for particular things which aren’t.
In any event it doesn’t matter - do/have what you like.

Roomba · 24/08/2019 15:07

Personal taste, I suppose. My mum and sister can't bear going fts that don't exactly match their 'colour schemes'. My friend and I (we were chatting about this recently) prefer the mismatched, bohemian style where every item has a story iyswim (an antique jug from aunt soandso's house , a serving plate from a holiday in Morocco, a rug from a trip to Khabul).

If you'd prefer not to receive stuff that doesn't fit with your 'look', just tell everyone in advance?

Roomba · 24/08/2019 15:11

If you have matching mugs and you drop one, do you just soldier on with the remaining three and only replace them once they're all broken?

My aunt would actually claim on her house insurance and buy a whole new set! If she broke a wine glass she'd claim, crazy. That was back in the days before compulsory excesses, insurers sharing data and so on (she's probably the reason they brought all that in!)...

StroppyWoman · 24/08/2019 15:18

We had too many mugs.
In an effort to prune them back a bit, I emptied the mug cupboard onto the counter and asked everyone to put their preferred mugs back in the cupboard, thinking any unchosen mugs could go.
Pah.
Turns out all 5 of us have opposing tastes in mugs, and I am the pickiest of the lot (that for normal coffee, that one for a flat white, this one for earl grey, that one for on the garden, etc etc)
DP prefers a different shape and only drinks one kind of hot drink.
I hate the Easter egg mugs but the kids all like theirs.
Even the hideous Sports Direct one was someone’s pick
(“Best mug for cooking noodles” apparently)

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 15:23

This thread is really making me laugh 😂😂🤣🤣 All those people managing to sleep soundly whilst their mug cupboard is in total disarray - you are brilliant!! Equally though, some of us just enjoy a bit of tasteful crockery, it takes all sorts!! 😂🤣🤭

HeronLanyon · 24/08/2019 15:27

Matching = tasteful. I think completely the opposite !!
It’s all subjective.
We can all sleep well Grin

BentNeckLady · 24/08/2019 15:31

How a mug cupboard should look Wink
