To not want mismatched mugs?

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 22:58

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

I'm not living in the 80s, so most of my stuff isn't bought to match. I also have fairly minimal stuff so I do hate it when people buy house stuff as I want less!

Iamafanoffans · 24/08/2019 08:55

I love mugs. All ours are different, lots are presents, some represent silly in jokes between me and DP. I have my fave mug for tea, coffee, peppermint tea and hot chocolate.
I simultaneously want to get rid of some, so I can justify getting some new ones, with keeping them all as they have memories attached.

We redid our kitchen a couple of years ago, some mugs got culled in the decluttering stage. We had over 40 mugs, there’s just the two of us.

EmeraldShamrock · 24/08/2019 08:56

I have matching mugs on my mug tree, a cupboard for mismatched mugs, I like using the mismatched they make my tea more interesting, plus if I drop it I don't need to replace 6 as I only use matching on the counter.

PooWillyBumBum · 24/08/2019 08:57

YANBU

We are set for mugs and I don’t want any gifted.

I have a lovely handmade set found in a charity shop, a couple of massive Denby’s and then my grandmas willow pattern teacups. I agree with you, kind of hate the “best mum” or just other random mugs.

Lockheart · 24/08/2019 08:58

I don't give a shiny shite as long as they're still functional. We don't have matching mugs or crockery.

If we're having guests over or we're having a nice dinner I'll extract one of the matching sets from the general cacophony but other than that it really makes no difference to me at the moment.

If I ever get married and own my own home I think I'd like a nice set of crockery (because I am a ceramics fiend, I have so many antique sets which I don't use because they're too fragile), but right now I can't bother myself that much about things I can actually drink out of.

Re; mugs - we have matching glass ones for hosting....but quite a few randoms, for when it’s just us at home, DM has her own mug at ours, when workmen come here etc.

I agree about cushions though(!) I tend to buy them in twos/fours etc to compliment a colour scheme. Would be a complete waste of money someone buying me a random one as I probably wouldn’t use it anywhere 😏.

OtraCosaMariposa · 24/08/2019 09:00

Everything matchy matchy is so soul-less. Bland, boring.

MIL is like this, she decides, for example, that her kitchen accessories have to be red, or lime green, or whatever. Then her red kettle breaks, or she smashes a couple of mugs and then "has" to bin the lot and start over with another colour scheme.

Super wasteful and ridiculous. Matchy matchy sets my teeth on edge.

Babdoc · 24/08/2019 09:04

My mugs aren’t matched, and I don’t care.
My favourite one is from 1978 and belonged to my much loved and missed late DH, who worked in IT and died when he was 36.
It says “Old computer types never die. They just go offline”.

bookworm14 · 24/08/2019 09:07

YANBU because it’s a matter of personal taste. However I love having lots of mismatched mugs.

strawberrypenguin · 24/08/2019 09:08

Pretty sure none of my mugs match!

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 09:08

I can’t abide sets of three - what a random gift!! 🤭🤣 Hmm I wouldn’t immediately look to replace a smashed mug to be honest because we have quite a few! They’re very plain, all white and classic so I’ve found lots to match them in different ranges over the years. One of my favourite things to do is to start the day with a coffee in a beautiful cup and saucer. I couldn’t start a day happily wading through a cupboard full of “eclectic” randomly patterned mugs Shock Also if you only have one of each type of mug, what happens if your DH uses your preferred one before you? It’s a lucky dip as to what you’ll be using for every brew. Absolute mayhem!!

I’d be bored ridged drinking a mug of tea out of a boring white mug! Hot drinks are like a lottery in my house, different mugs every time!

KUGA · 24/08/2019 09:19

OMG.
Seriously I dont have two mugs the same. We have our own mugs H has two he uses i have three and D has a few and theres others that are rarely used unless we have visitors.
That being said I have to have matching cutlery and wine glasses.
There`s nowt stranger than folk as they say.

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 09:21

Ha ha to the people saying they take them to work - I do that too! My colleagues probably think I’m making a point about doing ballet in my spare time because I bring so many random ugly mugs in with ballet dancers on them!! 😂😂🤣🤣 I’ve even had cushions, porcelain ornaments and tshirts with ballet dancers on - hideous! People apparently think I’d like that because it’s a passion of mine and I don’t want them in my house!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have mugs from all over the place and the random odd ones tend to be my favourites. I also have dinner sets from all over the place too 😬

BalanchineBallet · 24/08/2019 09:22

I really hate white mugs. It makes me think of every office with a coffee machine in the world. Out of interest how do you feel about the fact I don’t put crockery or mugs in cupboards? I just have open shelves and they all go on there....
same for all my jugs/ serving bowls etc. Just on the dresser with no order.... and of course they don’t match either.

ForalltheSaints · 24/08/2019 09:23

I manage four matching dinner plates and four matching side plates, but that is it.

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 09:25

@BalanchineBallet That would give me a headache! 🤣

Why would you necessarily have a preferred mug just because they're random? I couldn't care less which mug DH picks or which one is used for my teas and coffees.

6utter6ean · 24/08/2019 09:26

All my mugs (and other crockery) come from charity shops so are as random as they come!

BalanchineBallet · 24/08/2019 09:27

For which you’d find paracetamol in a basket on a higher shelf, amongst a flotilla of other medicines.... but the basket is wicker and it’s next to a snazzy metal wine thing!

I love hearing the differences we all have :)

Runbitchrun · 24/08/2019 09:27

The sort of guests who visit my home aren’t the sort who are bothered whether my mugs match 🤷🏻‍♀️
And as for the present concept, the same could be said of literally anything you buy as a present for someone else. It may not fit their personal way of doing things, but unless you just give a voucher every time, I don’t see an alternative.

Racingthorn · 24/08/2019 09:28

msadorabelle you've got over 80 mugs! How many cupboards does that fill?

Elphame · 24/08/2019 09:30

My mugs have to match. Any random ones gifted to me generally find their way unused to the nearest charity shop.

Odd really because nothing else here matches!

ElizaDee · 24/08/2019 09:33

I've just thought about it and the only reason all my crockery matched is because it's all white. It's all from different sets/places.
