To not want mismatched mugs?

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 22:58

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

YABU. I have an eclectic collection of mugs.... some Emma Bridgewater- the birds range, not the hearts!!- some Denby, a few hand made, some from the society I am archivist for- they have pretty pictures, not a logo as such!. I have a photo mug, a stripy one, a lovely one with a Fox on.

Don’t you need different mugs for different things? Coffee needs a tall and slim mug, slim lip to the cup. Tea in a thicker “mug”. Hot chocolate needs a wide bowl style mug, for the marshmallows....

NavyBlueHue · 23/08/2019 23:08

YABVU. No two mugs are permitted to match in my home. All different for the mood/drink.

BalanchineBallet · 23/08/2019 23:08

And surely there are mugs for having coffee outside in the morning sun with, and after dinner coffee cups.....

And yes. My cushions don’t match, but are complimentary and certainly don’t say shite like “live, laugh, love” on. Every room in my house is a different colour, none of which are grey. Even my armchairs and sofas don’t match Grin

Lucked · 23/08/2019 23:08

Agree I need different mugs for different beverages. Also what constitutes my favourite mug doesn’t work for my DH. And then there are the festive ones that make a mince pie taste even better.

BalanchineBallet · 23/08/2019 23:09

@NavyBlueHue thank god. I don’t know anyone with matching mugs...

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:10

I do have different types of mugs, yes! They all match though! I’m sure all your mugs are lovely, but doesn’t it bother you that they’re all mismatched?!

BalanchineBallet · 23/08/2019 23:10

@Lucked oh yes. When the Holly and Ivy ones come out, it’s Christmas!! And they have an inbuilt measure line for the tot of brandy.

Ellie56 · 23/08/2019 23:11

We have a cupboard full of mugs. Some match and some don't. Grin

Pinkdoor · 23/08/2019 23:12

Yabu. I have a set of matching le creuset but I also have a mug I bought from a pottery place in Cornwall, one from a gallery in Holland, a Halloween one, one my god kids made for me... Life is too short for only matching stuff

Rachelover40 · 23/08/2019 23:12

If that's how you feel, fine.

It doesn't bother me at all to have mismatched mugs, I quite like it. I have proper dinner, coffee and tea sets but my variety of mugs sit on mug trees (until I chip or drop them), and I enjoy. Usually have a favourite or two - one for tea, one for coffee.

My husband had a couple that were really nice, with cars on, and he liked drinking out of them.

I've bought mugs as gifts, you can often biuy two mugs with matching coasters; I bought two for someone that were art deco and they went down well as a gift.

BalanchineBallet · 23/08/2019 23:12

Not in the slightest. I pick up odd mugs from places, ones that I like, ones that remind me of things. I bought a dainty french floral patterned tea cup in the charity shop which I was stood in when I first felt my daughter kick. I have a mug my mum bought me with my pony’s name on 19 years ago...

Butterflykiss00 · 23/08/2019 23:12

I like matched mugs and plates ! It is annoying but u keep the mismatched gifted ones on a different shelf and they done get used Grin

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:12

I agree with the comment about slogan cushions - not good!!

Me and DP brought our first house last Feb.

I bought beautiful new matching China and glassware for the kitchen, he thought it was nice too and we chose it together.

I have lovely simple glass tumblers that are a reasonable size and quite wide.

I came home one day to find hes had delivered some new glasses as we dodnr have many... they are horrible skinny, small frosted glass floral things. I absolutely hate them.

He also bought a red slow cooker... when he admits he was choosing between red and black.. my kitchen is Copper, slate and Sage.

Fuming. He gets really defensive when I mention it too.

BalanchineBallet · 23/08/2019 23:14

@Cloudyyy ahhhh common ground at last! Glad to hear it.

pumkinspicetime · 23/08/2019 23:14

I have a set of matching mugs for hosting and a collection of individual mugs that I like and use when by myself or with DH.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 23/08/2019 23:14

In my personal opinion, YABVVVVU but that’s because I can’t stand things being ‘matchy matchy’. Makes a home look sterile, uncreative and impersonal IMHO. But why does everyone’s home need to conform to things like that? I have a red sofa with a yellow cushion, a blue cushion, a beige with embroidery cushion and a black and beige cushion. They’re comfy and I like them. We also have a cabinet full of different shape, size and color mugs. I personally prefer a chunky mug, but I know my Mum hates them so I have a couple of bone china ones too. I get a lot of ours from Anthropologie because I love their boho mix and match style.

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:15

@PoppingOneOutIn2020 your tumblers sound fab!! I can’t stand skinny ones either!!

Crikey!!!! I’m with you op! I hate random mugs! Work in a school and get so many as Christmas presents! Grim!!!!

30to50FeralHogs · 23/08/2019 23:15

Most of my mugs are in pairs - DP and i buy them as souvenirs when we go anywhere, so have some from Alcatraz, Barcelona, coffee cups nicked from our hotel from Italy. We have Best Boyfriend and Girlfriend mugs, pairs of chunky coffee cups we bought when we got a new coffee machine. Each pair has a little story. He also has one with his favourite TV show on it, and I have a couple that were gifts. My DCs know that you don’t use the Fox mug in the evening, that’s a morning mug. And you don’t make tea in a coloured mug, that’s for coffee.

Matching mugs are boring. I kept some nice white ones from my mums house, but they’re my least favourite to use.

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:17

It’s not so much that I think everyone else should conform... more that I can’t understand buying them for someone else and therefore enforcing the mismatching mug/ cushion situation in someone else’s home. I have had many over the years and I always thank people and just think “but why?!!”

Our mugs are mismatched. Crockery is plain white and a bit mismatched. Cushions mismatched but complimentary navy, dusky pink & white/grey.

TooManyPaws · 23/08/2019 23:20

I really don't care about 'kitchen china' though I did get a good selection of Emma Bridgewater flower mugs in the sale. If I want matchy-matchy for having guests round, there's my set of Denby with dinner, tea and coffee sets or my mother's delicate bone china dinner, tea and coffee sets. Mugs are everyday items and the china in the kitchen is the same.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 23/08/2019 23:22

Most of my mugs are Emma Bridgewater. I think I’ve got over 80 now, although some are on the dresser and some are Christmas ones. They’re all the same shape but obviously they don’t match as they’re all different patterns.

I’ve got a few other sorts too. Never would have occurred to me in a million years that it mattered that they didn’t match. Confused

DontCallMeShitley · 23/08/2019 23:22

I have loads of odd mugs, but they are all packed away. As we have glass fronted cupboards where the mugs are kept they have to match, although we have several different sets, but all in the same colours. If I could just shut the door and not see them it wouldn't matter but I see them every time I go into the kitchen.
