To not want mismatched mugs?

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

I have same style mugs but in different colours. I really like that

NiceWork · 23/08/2019 23:50

Excellent point, @Mrsmurrayposh. You could even acquire a Sports Direct-themed home in order to make a suitable environment for the tradesmen’s mugs.

IamtheOA · 23/08/2019 23:51

@BalanchineBallet

Coffee needs a tall and slim mug, slim lip to the cup

No! Are you nuts? Coffee needs a giant mug with a sturdy handle.

Hot chocolate needs a wide bowl style mug, for the marshmallows
Now you're talking!

ScreamingValenta · 23/08/2019 23:54

By definition, mugs are used for informal drinks - you'd use cups for a formal occasion - so there's no reason for them to match unless it's something that makes you happy. If it pleases you to have matching mugs, YANBU.

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:54

Some of you have really made me laugh 😂👏

Differences reflect character. Matchy-matchy is incredibly naff and looks as though everything was bought in a job lot by someone trying to stage a house to sell.

katewhinesalot · 23/08/2019 23:55

Mine match.
I also prefer tall skinny glasses.

Mrsmurrayposh · 23/08/2019 23:56

Tradesmen? The very idea...

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:58

@omafiet There are lots of naff mugs and cushions around - the worst offending one usually don’t match much! 🤣😂

@Cloudyyy

I don't know anybody WITHOUT mismatched mugs.

We have mugs in our house that feature..... Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Justin Bieber, Motorhead, Bratz, Harley Davidson, The Beatles, The Moon, A VW Beetle car, Zodiac signs, our and Christian names... to name but a few!

Also have a few mugs that came with Easter Eggs. A Creme Egg one, A Maltesers one, a Smarties one, and a few other similar 'chocolate bar' ones.

SURELY, you have had one of these in your house at some time OP??? Grin

To be fair, I bet you’re actually pleased you don’t have a full set of those egg mugs!! 🤣

Before I found Mumsnet I had never given a thought to matching anything in my house, my shopping style is more "I need some mugs, those are mugs, I'll buy them then". If I'm choosing two sorts of things (say, sofas and cushions) at the same time then they will probably match, providing that "matching" means "not hideously clashing". They would be very unlikely to be the same colour though, I just don't have the concentration span required to seek out cushions of exactly the right tone (and the cushions that come with sofas usually disintegrate within a week).
I have my own special mugs for each kind of drink, and everyone else takes their chances in the mug cupboard- some things match because there was a set of 6 in the shop when I last broke some mugs, but most of them are a bit random.

RainingFrogsAndHats · 24/08/2019 00:05

I'm in the mis-match camp. I actually LIKE things that don't match.

For example, our table has 6 chairs... they're all different on purpose

I think people think differently about their homes. Some people want their homes to look like a show-home from a magazine. I am proud to say not one of them.
I actually think it shows a lack of imagination
And I just don't get why someone would think this is important. It seems to me that some people think having their own home means having something to clean and some people think having their own home means a place to live, laugh, love and be happy.

I assume the matching mugs/cushions people live, love laugh and are happy as well.

But just about different things.

And I'm one of those "I like my early morning cuppa out of a mug THIS size, my DH doesn't care about size/shape, but only likes to drink coffee from a mug that's white on the inside/this was a gift/this I brought because I met the potter/this my DD brought me/this one used to belong to my grandfather" etc etc etc.

And can I also spin this round a little by saying that one of things that gives me joy in life is when I go round to a friend's house and I sit on their sofa and look round their living room and think "I gave them that and that and that

DickKerrLadies · 24/08/2019 00:07

In my head, I'd love to have a full set of matching plates, bowls, cups, mugs etc. with just enough for everyone.

But maybe it's just my house but we're a bunch of clumsy fuckers and gradually pieces break so I've given up!

Jsmith99 · 24/08/2019 00:08

YABU.

Almost all our extensive stock of mugs are random ones. Lots of corporate/ promotional freebies, a few ancient relics of student days, many of indeterminate/ forgotten origin. A couple ‘borrowed’ from Starbucks. Mismatched mugs are very cool indeed.

justasking111 · 24/08/2019 00:09

We have matching mugs, Wrendale, also plates etc. but the ones that make me smile are gifts from children, grand children. I have two that sit on kitchen windowsill that have pictures of babies on them. Much better than pictures that you cannot wash occasionally when they get mucky.

Cecilandsnail · 24/08/2019 00:14

I have one set of quite nice mugs that match that go all in a line on cupboard top shelf. When I have visitors that are grown up and proper I get them out and feel like I'm winning at adulthood with my matchy set. You would be served in one of these op 😁 other people who know my slightly chaotic self get any one of my array of non matchers. I like to judge a mug by need. If I have black coffee I like it in a portmeirion mug or a clear glass one. If I have only coffee it's in one from the match set. Tea when I'm not rushing is in a chunky mug with an orange peacock, or a quick tea is in a mug with a shocked face emoji that my son made. Or if I'm reeeeeally gasping and want two cups I have it in my GIANT Kelloggs mug that's more like a bowl. This is the most outing post I've ever written on mn 😂

FairyDust92 · 24/08/2019 00:14

I don't have a set of matching mugs... 😂 mine all have patterns/pictures on. Doesn't bother me. I have to have a set of matching plates though oh and cutlery

Cloudyyy · 24/08/2019 00:16

@RainingFrogsAndHats I can’t imagine choosing six different chairs for the table!!! It’s lovely that you enjoy gifting items to your friends but if you had a friend with matching cushions on their sofa, would you gift them a random one to add to it? Would you expect them to use it if you did?!

@justasking111 Ahhh that sounds so cute! I’m a big photo person and display lots in the house too ( although my frames all match 🤣🤭).

That you Hyacinth?? How are the hand-painted periwinkles?

which1 · 24/08/2019 00:32

I'm with you OP.

I see loads of lovely individual mugs in places like Wilko and would love to buy them but it would bother me to have them in the cupboard as they'd not match the plates and bowls.

When I got an Easter egg with a Cadbury mug it in a while back, I had to keep it in a separate cupboard so it didnt 'mess up' the look of the normal one.

@Cloudyyy, I buy presents for my friends based on things I think they'll like.
I've NEVER brought anything for someone with the thought that "hmmm, their living room is teal, now what "teal" things can I find?"

Maybe my friends are all like me with their approach to home decor??? Never thought about this before. Lots of their homes are smarter than mine.
But I guess I knew my MIL loved the colour mauve, so if ever I brought her something, I'd try and get it mauve. Whether that be a bunch of flowers or a cushion or a scarf.

I'm really thinking about it. I don't think I know anyone matchy-matchy in my RL. Not anyone I'm close to. I guess if I did, I'd either get them something totally matchy-matchy too or else revel in being the rebel and getting them something in shocking pink and telling them I'll be hurt if they don't display it.
But, probably, I'll just buy them something else instead. Like a bottle of wine or something that they don't "have" to display in their homes.

I'm not trying to be goady (honestly!), but there's a bit of me that thinks that if you're someone who thinks everything has to be "perfect" then you're kind-of missing the point.

I think it's the difference between thinking life is for living (me) and those who think life is for showing something polished and perfect.

I'm sure that's not you, but it's how you are coming across to me.
